When you have a part number (e.g. MA610LL/A) you know its more than just your average rumour.

That's pretty much what I was looking for: SR & updated graphics & larger hard drive standard (looking at high end 15.4"). An LED backlit LCD would be nice, but for me its not worth waiting any longer for. It was more along the lines of a nice surprise.

I'm glad I waited a month.

Yeah its there, but clicking it takes you to the standard Apple store with no further info.

You know, TFT doesn't mean no LED backlight. . .

I wonder if the 17" will get similar specs to the higher end 15, except maybe a 200GB HD or the like.

If they redesign the case to include a user replaceable hard drive, then this upgrade will be pretty much perfect.

Okay, I'm being kind of a jerk in these responses, but geez, they're so random. Where were you guys when the Macbook got it's "upgrade"? Or were you defending THAT while slamming an actual upgrade?

The nvidia chips are significantly faster.

Should be close to double the performance of the x1600.

The 7600GT approached twice as fast as the dirt-slow x1600. The 8600 is in a whole different league. It's not the most powerful mobile GPU out there in raw power (that would be the 7950GTX), but it's close to as good as it gets for a laptop, and of course it supports Direct X 10 level features.

What I don't get though, is why they don't use 800Mhz RAM? Is it just too expensive? (Apple never seemed to have a problem with that in the past ;) )

667MHz RAM *is* the fast stuff. Many *DESKTOPS* ship with slower.

I double-checked the specs of the current models and this is not really an update.

Then you need to triple check the specs, when you'll realize it's about as big of an upgrade as Apple could have possibly done. It's the exact opposite of the Macbook "upgrade".

The only real different, based on this article is the GPU. Is that really worth the trouble?

In the first place, it's a whole new platform. Faster CPUs, new chipset, 64-bit support, etc. But even if it was just a new GPU-we're going from LAST YEAR'S low end GPU to THIS YEAR'S mid range model. So yes, that's worth it.

...Also that while power consumption was down significantly from previous generations, performance gains where minimal.

Wrong. Performance on the 8600GT wastes the 7600GT across the board, and adds DX 10 class support on top of that. The 7600GT already wasted the Radeon x1600...so yes, this is a huge GPU upgrade.

I was wondering this myself... I don't know much about which GPU's are what. How good are these GPU's, anyone know?

Close to as good as it gets for a notebook. Only the 7950GTX flat out beats it (but lacks DX 10). The 7900GS probably beats it in some things, loses in others, but is also a DX 10 part, so overall the 8600GT is arguably a better choice.

Mac's are usually pricey, are we getting a good deal here? I would expect a price drop. I was expecting Leopard to come out with it too?

Why would you expect a price drop OR leopard? Leopard is October. And prices have been consistent for several generations of systems.

I am so patiently waiting to see how the new mcbook pro's turn out.
But I have a feeling apple will not look the other way and just release
something very un-spectacular.

Your feeling goes against every rumor that's been presented for months now.

...By the way the new dell tops any current apple offering in the notebook genre.

No it doesn't. It's better than the Macbook, if that's the form factor you want. Dell's year old e1705 and M1710, and apparently all the Macbook Pros destroy Dell's new 13" if you care about performance or screen real estate.

The 965 chipset used in SR platform also produce more heat, use more power. Intel could have released 667FSB Merom at 2.5GHz (166.66 x 15) and 2.66GHz (166.66 x 16) to keep memory at preferred ratio with DDR2-667 (1:2) rather than (3:5) 800FSB:667MHz combo on SR.

Bus and RAM speeds haven't been kept synchronous for years. And I'd rather have the better performance that comes from the faster bus, than an arbitrary ratio between the two.

It's too quiet in here.. Aren't there gonna be people posting in here ..."Oh my God... This is the best they come up with?! THAT'S IT, I'm waiting for Penryn."

If the upgrades are as good as the rumors say, than only idiots will be saying thigns like that. The Macbook got tons of negative posts because it was a pathetic 160MHz speed bump, with nothing else to distinguish it.

Since so many resources were poured into the iPhone we won't get Santa Rosa or Robson.

All the rumors say we are getting the new chipsets and CPU.

The real update on the MacBook Pros: Slightly faster CPUs, ability to add more than 3 gigs of memory, slightly bigger hard drives, and a wait time of another 6+ months for Santa Rosa, Robson, OLEDs and HD.

No, Santa Rosa (or at least the important pieces of it) is here TODAY, if every rumor, and common sense, is correct.

And who on EARTH would want an OLED display!?! That's nuts. Those things are cheap garbage. Using them on a $40 MP3 player might make sense. Using them on a $2000-3000 laptop? I don't think so!

someone who's name I missed said:
...Intel can say what ever about 965 chipset, it's just less appealing than Intel P35 mobile chipset (Montevina Platform) that is due around Q1 2008.

Umm...yeah. A chipset launching in Q1 of 2008 is better than one launched Q2 2007...am I supposed to be shocked by that?

uh oh, smells like another macbook-esque update on the wind. That would be pretty disappointing.

And again I have to say...huh? If this upgrade is true, then it encompasses basically everything we've wanted (except possibly for a case design that allows user replaceable hard drives).

They almost have to do more than that to keep up the gap between the pro and consumer models don't you think? It seems to me that the macbook would really cannibalize the MBP sales if they don't...

Huh? If the rumored specs are true, the gap just got a lot wider between the Macbook and Pro.

7 minutes till we find out!

No, try tomorrow morning. They don't update at midnight.

No LED LCD? Nvidia 8600M GT is a 43W 80nm chip, hot and power hunger! ATI X1600 only consumes 17W.

Even if that's true...who cares!?! On a power/performance basis, the 8600GT destoys the x1600. Plus, can it be underclocked when on battery? Or will a possible LED backlit screen make up the difference in power?

It's actually 70MHz to be exact! 2330MHz (667 Merom) vs 2400MHz (800 Merom)! No wonder Apple doesn't care to release SR platform ahead of other manufactures.

You're totally ignoring the almost 20% fast FSB! Not to mention the better chipset, etc.

Where do you see that? I have iTunes open and I don't see it...

It's right on the front page of the iTMS, but it's just a link to the front page of the Apple Store since they haven't updated the Apple Store with the new Back to School '07 promo material yet.

AppleInsider says 120GB HD...that's less than the standard blackbook

i don't know if anything is coming out tomorrow morning, or if it will be WWDC, but one thing I know for sure is there is no way they're releasing a smaller harddrive in the pro that the blackbook.

hence, i declare BS on AppleInsider's part

Here's a screen. I had to restart iTunes to get it. Note the orange square area near the top of iTunes... It fades from a Paul McCartney ad to that orange, then stops there. A pending update, methinks.

You know, TFT doesn't mean no LED backlight. . .

Yes, I'm still quietly hoping but its already met the bar for me and I'm trying not to experience the disappointment. I'm happy as-is... if its LED backlit, then its a total home-run for me. Even without that, as listed in the AI note its what I was looking for.
