I was suggesting that a macbook would be a better solution than the macbook pro if your sole purposes for it were merely email checking and making word documents, that is, unless you have the extra money. I was responding to the comment about the iPad being a reasonable replacement for the macbook pro for people who only email and type documents. I am all for the macbook pro, but I utilize it's power.

yes iPad will be a good option for the macbook pro
with some inconveniences on cd/dvd reader
and buying a keyboard dock separately.

Well, I'm also on the waiting list for the new MBPs. Since I saw a lot of suggestions of what should/shouldn't be included in them, I decided to post mine too ( similar to the ones pointed in this thread ).
So I'm not a pro in hardware/software topics, but I have some thoughts on this very subject. This is my personal opinion.

First off, attaching USB 3.0 to the notebooks will not do me any good ( + I'm sure most of the people don't need it atm ), for the simple reason that I don't have a single device in my household that's supported by it.

BluRay ? Sure, let's hope they include it. But for me, I don't even see the use of this since most of the BluRay stuff I have is downloaded from the internet.

Yes, new tech is good to include. My point about these two up there is that I'll live without them, I think there are much more important things that they have to get in the body of the machine.

I'm also waiting to see i3/i5/i7 CPUs in the models, as follows - i3/i5 for 13" model, i5 for the lowest end 15" model, and i7 for top 15" model and 17" models. ( just a guess ). I'm almost 100% sure it will be something like that. It's inevitable. Of course everything can be offered as an upgrade for a given price. Anyway, that's for the CPUs.

Now, for the RAM I'm also considering 4 gigs to be default for all the models, with the option to upgrade up to 12 gigs maybe ? Could be easily implemented.

The thing that I'm most concerned about is the GPU. I really hope that they will include some cutting edge graphic cards like nVidia GeForce GTX 280M SLI ( well this might be kind of impossible, for the sake of a good looking and thin macbook pro, or maybe as an upgradable option ( heat - wise too ) ? ) maybe the 260M ? I don't know. I really hope at least to be a GPU from this class, 'cause these beasts are really boosting overall performance.

Hmm, for the HDDs I'd say 500GB default for all models, with options to upgrade to 750GB/1TB and up to 2TB ( I don't want to know what the price will be for this upgrade though ).

SSDs - Of course prefering them over the HDDs for the speed mostly and the lightness. 128/256 gig offerings maybe ? Not sure about that. Let's hope. Everything over 256 gigs SSD will be ridiculous cash.

Design wise - I don't think this update will be focusing on new visuals ( or at least not radically ). Personally I love how the current MBPs look and feel, and I don't want them to be changed ( not in my power to stop them do it, but still an opinion ! ). Matte/Glass screens SHOULD be free of choice, and not payable as an upgrade. You either choose the one or the other, no charge for it ( hoping ).

Weight - I think they're good in the current pounds.

What I saw somewhere in the topic was a discussion about the eventual removal of optical drives, which got me thinking if this is a good idea or not. Now as I see it might be really good to do this, if they plan on putting something else in that spot, instead of the drive. ( more powerful parts maybe ). Also if they do that eventually, they can include an external optical drive ( for free ! ) like the one that comes with the HP Envy - a very nice solution. After all a lot of us still rely on CDs/DVDs, etc.

Battery Life - I say it's stable at the moment. I will be more than happy if they extend it though !

So yeah, these are my visions for the new MBPs. And no, NO 3D bullcrap ! Please Apple !

My wish list would include the following....

1. 4 GB RAM
2. 500 GB HDD
3. OLED screen with a higher res than the current
4. NVIDIA Optimus GPU
5. i5/i7
6. HDMI port
7. eSata port
8. 8 hour battery
9. Blu Ray drive
10. Replaceable Battery
11. USB 3.0

I highly doubt these would all make it onto the next MBP, but it would be good to see at least SOME make it...

I think it's almost virtually a "no" that you'll see eSATA and a replaceable battery. It's "probably no" on higher resolution (we've been asking for it for years now). USB3 is "possibly" (wouldn't surprise me), as is Blu Ray. Graphics is a "maybe." And the rest are doable (whether BTO or not is the question).

I deploy to Iraq next month and I'm ten times more concerned with this update than being away from my girlfriend for 12 months. I need concrete answers and I'm crossing my fingers for this Friday. please be valid

This suggests to me you either need a new girlfriend or an adjustment of your priorities.

Ouch. Even if the OP's words came off akward, I bet he was kidding... That's just a cold statement - happens too damn often to our men in uniform... Disgusting.

living on a military base, I agree. But it takes two to tango. Some spouses are down right sheisty (men and women) :(

Apple Prices Dropping

Macmall lowered their entry level macbook pro an additional $10 to 1604. Best buy stores are running out of stock. Go to bestbuy.com and search for the macbook pro in you area when you go to that models page. It will be based on zip code. Also, discount prices on ebay along with the 8% up to $200 dollar discount. Go to bing.com and search macbook. Click the ebay promotional link and start browsing. I'm getting new macbook pro 15" entry models at $1454 for the base unit. Higher models have the same type of discounting. Looks like upgrade in just around the corner. Won't get these discounts with the new one so way your options now.

Yeah, it looks like the 6 closest BestBuy stores are out of almost all 15" models. Nice. I hope this means next Tuesday.

My wish list would include the following....

1. 4 GB RAM
2. 500 GB HDD
OK.
3. OLED screen with a higher res than the current
Biggest OLED screen that I could find was the 15", 1366x768 EL9500; $3k for the TV version. Not gonna happen.
4. NVIDIA Optimus GPU
Maybe. But it would produce a raft of whining, as NVidia doesn't have any current-gen notebook GPUs.
I'd certainly hope so. Unless they plan to sneak a pre-release Sandy Bridge in there.
6. HDMI port
Um, no. DisplayPort > HDMI.
8. 8 hour battery
10. Replaceable Battery
Pick one of the above. For bonus points, pick the one Apple already has.

Heh... while it would be an interesting change cosmetically, I'd discard this as entirely unlikely... First, the aluminum (silver) casing is the signature styling of Apple's PRO market - MBP and Mac Pro included. Their iMac and Mac Mini make great use of aluminimum as well and as we've seen, even the BlackBook was eliminated from the line up. Secondly, how would that even be achieved? Painting the aluminium... integrating some type of dye into it...I don't think it's even possible...

Umm how about the same thing they did with the black ipod nano?

Ha! Trash cans of cupertino, funny. I'm gonna go by what I've always gone by the past couple of years... Best Buy's dwindling stock and say it'll be within a week.

Source??

So Rabbisound.......where is this information from??? You sound confident in your claims - but how do we know this is even remotely true? (sorry for doubting you - but many have claimed a 'confirmed' release date prior to your post :D)

Okay the source...I am sorry I cannot reveal, I am more than confident what I've stated here is fact you'll see April 10 the MBP refresh the keyboard color change and May will see the ned of the MACBOOK AIR (yes it is sadly joining HIFI and a bunch of other mildly cool stuff in the Cupertino Archives Of Love aka C.A.L that's Apple Insider talk). We also very shortly (May-ish) see the iPod classic morph into something that it is currently priced very very closely to hint hint check the store.
We will see new displays with 3 new tricks up their sleeves (4 if you count the 42")

But I guess the big one in the next 2 weeks is the MBP cosmetic changes and speed bumps - these are real and remember this heads up in 2 weeks.

Silver Keyboard (gone is black) and i7 only available in 17" Apple is also preparing to keep stock numbers extremely high for the new 17" over the 13 and the 15" as the feel that more and more people will opt to buy a 17" now that an iPad will replace their needs for a smaller screen laptop.
More scoops this time JUNE.

So then what are you saying about the 13 & 15"?

Oh and is simple as it sounds it was Steve and Steve alone that has decided the change in the remote and MBP button/Keyboard color shift from Black to white (remote) and Silver (MB).
One of the first things Steve (and Steve alone) did when he returned was change the previous iMac curved screen edges to the straights we see now on current iMac gens - that was not IVE that was all Steve, simple yet we'll never look back.. that's why I love him, he can be a little picky at time "clean your room this is a pigs-pen" but most of the time he's just a cool Dad "No I Am Your Father".

Okay well I have reveled enough TRUTHS, you guys think about it and blast me but isn't this what you want ? I'd rather some TRUTH over RUMORS so today I give you TRUTH over RUMORS.

I will be back this time in late MAY/early JUNE for more on the iPod Classic morphhhhhh thing.

what did I mean about the 13 and the 15........
I'll just say this until I return in JUNE .....17" MBP Users were once 13"/15" MBP users.
Mac Users were once WINDOWS users.
I was 21 ONCE but I'll never be 21 Again.

The sooner people stop believing this nonsense the better.

Time for a REAL truth - the Macbook Pro will be refreshed tomorrow by 10am GMT. Listen to meeeeee.

Just stop. You try to make it like you are not revealing things, but if you were actually revealing truths you wouldn't attempt to be so cryptic.

First of all, most people do not want a 17" notebook. The 13" is the top selling notebook and will continue to be...that alone shows me that you are lying, because attempting to sell more 17"ers to consumer just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
