Anyone trading in a MBP to Apple? (by shipping it) in US. Any advice? How was your experience?
Not sure if anyone replied, but it’s good practice to take photos of your machine at all angles. Heaven forbid it gets damaged in transit you don’t want your trade in value to go down!
Use caution on trade-ins and DEFINTELY take pictures. And make sure your pictures are time stamped of the day of shipping. Apple doesn’t handle trade-ins themselves. This is through a contract with a company called Phobio. They’re a company with a HORRIBLE reputation. I traded in my 2011 iMac 2 years ago, and they sent me the box. My iMac was in pristine condition. I used their box and packed it like I was instructed. Sent it to them and a few days pass, and they send me a revised quote to accept for less than half of my originally quoted value from Apple (Apple originally offered me like 240$ for it, Phobio sent me a revised offer of like $50). The reason, they cited extensive damage to the chassis and corners of the iMac. I demanded photo proof, which they would not provide, so I demanded a return of my iMac. Upon getting it back, it was completely destroyed. Corners of the iMac were smashed in, stand was damaged, chin was gouged - like it fell off a table - this couldn’t have happened in the box during shipping.
I reached out to Apple & the Better Business Bureau. Phobio has asked to be delisted from the BBB website multiple times. They refused to address the issue, and denied that they damaged my computer. BBB reported to me that I am one of thousands of consumers with complaints against them, but they refuse to recognize the BBB rating, and have asked to not be listed. I made sure Apple was well aware of what was happening, and wrote emails to executive relations, Tim Cook directly and others with pictures of the damage, and more. I wanted them to know what their trade in partner was doing to customers. Apple worked with me, and I ended up with someone in Executive relations who made things right, and refunded some recent purchases to help make up for the complete loss on my end.
I’ve traded in iPhones/iPads before, and as I understand it, these too go to Phobio. Those have been incident free. But I’ll only sell computers privately anymore. And I document the physical shape of my devices thoroughly before I ship them.
