Is it worth upgrading to 1GB RAM (from the standard 512) through apple, or should I buy a 1GB stick somewhere else and install it myself?
Does that risk stuffing up everthing and/or voiding the warranty (i'm not particularly technically capable)?

I usually always upgrade elsewhere with apple, but ive been out of the loop latley on ram pricing.

I've been waiting for this forever. I've got a PBG4-12" that I want to replace even though it's brand new, BUT...

The good: love the resolution in that size of screen - finally Apple puts enough pixels in a smaller amount of space

The bad: $200 for black is insulting considering this is Apple we're talking about - they've always been so good to me in the past, why become microsoft now? Pay extra for a plastic you have proven to me with my nano will scratch when breathed on? I think not. Sorry Apple, I love you, but I'm no sucker.

The ugly: integrated graphics is what killed this sale. I have been planning for over a month to buy the MB the moment it was released, but the integrated graphics just will not do - why would I downgrade from an ATI9200 to an Intel anything... maybe it's because I've owned intel cards in the past... I just cannot pay anything for an intel graphics chip - yuck.

Enjoy your Dell.

It should be like all (modern) laptops with a door in the bottom. No warranty probs then.

Read post #246 of Page 10. Ramseeker to Omni $144 for two 1GB sticks.

It doesn't automatically void your warranty, but if you're having a problem and the third-party ram is the cause, you're likely to have to pay for the parts and labor - even if you're covered under AppleCare.

As being an iBook owner for a year and two months, I am so jealous. Those new MacBooks look amazing!!!!! And it's at a great price too. Good job Apple.

I've tried to find some links for the Intel GMA 950 graphics processor, but none were any good. Anyone know where a person might find some benchmarks.

I love Apple from now on. In DK they lowered all the MBP's with around 1.000 kr.! ($150). To be true, I don't care about the crap graphics, these uber processors are enough. I'm gonna get the $1200 with 1.5 GB RAM. Perhaps 60 GB HDD...

Thanks to Apple!:D

i'm kinda surprised they put a core duo in all of their not-pro user laptops... cool though! i'm also incredibly tempted to sell my 12'' G4 powerbook and get a black one but my powerbook is still under warranty and i'm afraid i wouldn't get enough $$$. any advice?

EDIT: also, where are the new ipods? i need a toy for summer.

well, intergrated graphics, are there, but come january.... i think i'll still get one. they are the sexiest thing ive seen.

The white Dual 1.83Ghz is a real good deal. Initially I was thinking that I'd want to max out my new MacBook, but now I'm trying to get realistic about how I'm going to use it. It's not a desktop replacement (for me), it's just for when I want to be mobile. Geez, I can pick up a White MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo w/ 1GB RAM and 80GB HD + a White iPod Nano for a total of only US$1398! I just have to wait for this to show up at CompUSA. Got to cover my purchase in case there's a stuck Red/Green/Blue pixel on my new MacBook. I expect perfection  With CompUSA I can rest assured that I'll get it.

Also, hoping that the TrackPad supports the same functionality as the new 17-inch MBP where as you can use two fingers and a click to execute an alternate click (right click). I'm thinking this is pretty much a given...

Not impressed at all. Integrated graphics? 512mb Memory and a combo drive on a £750 machine and a £130 premium for a different colour? Apple are really taking the piss now. For those prices they should have some hardcore specs. Maybe Apple are finding it a bit difficult engineering a small intel based laptop?

I'm so glad I've got my 12 inch PB.

Ok... The book is nice and all but ME waits till it ships with ten five to see what the full potential will be. I'll also be watching the reports on the glossy screen, graphics performance and overall functionality before taking a bite.

Still gots me 1.67 PB 17 to play with :p

who want's to bet, next they will release black and white iMac's with optional screen. Those options would be nice.
That's my idea - the dual-core Conroe mini-tower.

Not an iMac, though - too restricted.

A small form factor mini-tower (or pizza-box - think "Media Centre" with a DVD player form factor).

  • Dual-core Conroe desktop chip
  • Standard DDR2 memory DIMMs (not laptop SO-DIMMs)
  • space for a 2nd 3.5" hard disk and/or 2nd optical
  • PCIe x16 graphics slot !!
  • one or two PCIe x4 expansion slots (x8 socket)
  • plus the usual stuff (1394/GbE/BT/USB2/...)

Eliminate the low-end maxi-tower (it's usually crippled in some fashion anyway), and have the Conroe mini-tower as a desktop.

While, i think it looks really nice, I dont like the price increase... I dont get why apple is upping their prices on everything... I though intel processors were less expensive!Oh well, i guess it still looks nice though!

keyboard

has anyone noticed how cheap the keyboard looks? If it is anything like those new sonys, it is going to suck

Actually, I'm pretty sure that it's just a software update that causes that to work. I haven't heard about that before, so maybe someone could possibly hack it for recent Powerbooks and iBooks? Pretty please?

Hell I can do that on my 14" 933MHz iBook. ;)
