Just a couple photos and some brief information - feel free to leave comments.

My friends are all graduating, so this is a perfect computer for all of them. The pictures link directly to Apple's website, as well.

Lame. You're trying to get traffic to your site. You don't have any *PERSONAL* photos of a MacBook.

Can you please quote in full those T&Cs? Because as far as Apple says on their publicly accessible HE website there's no free 3 year warranty, AppleCare or otherwise.

This is only available through an institution. There are 2 different education stores.

about RAM

Get your RAM on eBay. I got my 2 1GB bars for my iMac (see Sig) for 180 EUR on eBay. Not the best price, I agree, but around here, you hardly find any of thos 667MHz RAM SO-DIMMs and they're at 120 EUR or more (for 1GB).

And upgrading RAM is extremely easy. If you already popped in a CD or DVD into a computer / CD-Player, you are qualified for doing this. It's merely unscrewing the lid/battery and you will find pictured instructions in there. I really laughed when I upgraded RAM on my iMac and saw the pictures on the bottom of the stand. It's actually like changing tapes in a VCR: press to eject the old RAM and put in the new. No need to be a techie here.

I hope you know you can save around $200-250 by installing 2 GB of ram yourself ...

BLACKBOOK HAS DROPPED!

Huh? Where? Wouldn't surprise me. Something doesn't make sense. Apple knows how to hit price points, and to charge $150 for color just not Apple's style. Blackbook probably will ship w/ 1GB ram, or something else that reduces the difference to $50 or less (probably not something that can only get by going black since would bother buyers who want that feature, in a Whitebook).

I've been reading this thread for an hour now, but I just can't find pictures of the outside of the black macbook. I like to know if it's glossy or not, because that is what I like from the current white Ibooks. Can anyone tell me this ?

Integrated graphics... a bit disappointing, but it's a consumer, not a pro. With 1gig RAM, how will this do with World of Warcraft?

However, the 12" PB replacement is still a missing space in Apple's product line. I'd much rather have the smaller screen and smaller footprint than this 13" thing.

And is it a dual layer DVD writer or not?
Specs say: Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer read support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed

Yup. Just installed 2 GB of RAM in my intel Mini last night. less than $150 shipped for 2 lifetime warrantied 1 GB sticks. Check out Ramseeker for the latest deals. Only if I could pay myself the $ I saved!! LOL

Check out looprumors.com - they got photos of the black MacBook, it's matte. Very cool looking. Wish they had higher res photos. I'm sure someone will post some within a couple of hours!

EDIT: Ask and ye shall receive - Look at the post ABOVE!! ^^^^^ LOL

The white macbooks have a glossy finish, the black macbooks have a matte finish.

If the so called "benefit" of using 2x256mb DDR2 ram is for the graphics card, will taking out one of the 256 chips out and putting in a 1GB chip (for a total of 1280mb) hurt the machine? Slow performance?

lol - I did check out the computers at my local Apple store earlier, and I'm not a fan of the glossy screens (my store has a ton of windows - you couldn't see anything on the screens, and next to the MacBook Pro matte screens they weren't great...)

Anyway, the keyboard is...different. I like it, but it would take a bit getting used to. The resolution isn't high enough for me (it's perfect for a 13", don't get me wrong, but it's not ideal for what I do, so I needed the 15").

As for my site - it's more for my friends than anything, as they're going to college. I was actually looking for advice as to what to add, if anything; my friends check the site often. If I was simply looking for hits, I would have linked my home page, as that's the only site with a counter - I really don't know how many people access my blog directly.

At least my post was better than those who say, 'wow, this looks great' - those are completely useless. Do you have any other comments or suggestions? I appreciate them (seriously) - but please leave them my site, as they'll be easier to find and read there.

Thanks. :)

EDIT: deleted the link. I understand why people were mad - they thought I posted pictures of the Macbook itself! Nope - I'm just trying to get my friends to switch. Sorry for the inconvenience!

There are 2 different Apple Stores (or depts, whatever...) that offer Education discounts:

1. The basic one. You can access this from anywhere. Just click on the educational discounts link in the normal Apple Store website, enter your region and institution and you're in. The terms and conditions here state a 12 month waranty.

2. The "National Agreement Higher Education" store. You NEED to access this from your Uni's LAN. It's probably different for each Uni but at Sussex I can access it via the IT services "facilities" section. After logging in to a proxy server, using my uni account name and password, I'm presented with drop-downs to choose region and institution. This Apple store is the one that the gov't and the institutions do business with and the terms and conditions show a 36 month warranty.

Yes, the BASIC ONE is for F/E (colleges) and the discount is around 4%. The H/E one is for Unis and the discount is 8%+ You CAN access the store outside of university, so long as you have the link to it

Can someone confirm what store this is?

It only reads DL discs (most DVD movies released today are DL). It is NOT a DL DVD burner.

You use Apple's stock photos and have a very cursory statement. This is merely blog spam, sorry.

if you buy ram from a good vendor like crucial its $379 compared to $500 from apple. so you save more like $150. but if there is any problem with your computer apple usually wants you to remove all third party ram first. so that's a pain if you need the warranty and you already lost/sold your apple ram. in that case i probably prefer paying the $150 more.

Wow!

The Loooprumors pictures - WOW!!! The glossy screen looks FABULOUS! Also I would've prefered a glossy black enclosure, but it would've shown scratches and fingerprints much easier...wow, what a great machine!

It looks cool, but I'm still in doubt if it's worth the 190euro's (over 220$).

Apple states 2.5 hours for DVD, 3.5 hours normal usage with wireless, 6 hours max (6 hours is what they usually would post on their own).

I'd say you'd get 3-4 hours of batt life from that, which seems typical. Contrast that with laptops that have high capacity batteries, such as the Sony SZ with 6 hours real life performance, and the Thinkpad X60s with over 8 hours ... with optional extended batteries of course.
