Other impressions of my new MacBook:

It's heavier than my old Superdrive G4 Powerbook
Screen is very, very bright.
Integrated graphics seem to do an excellent job of processing all the OSX eye candy.

I will install WOW later and report on the performance.

hmm... whats the reddish icon between QT and the system pref?

Dare I say it? The black looks a little like a... Dell  <turns and runs>

And I know it has already been asked many times here, but: why in the world are they charging so much more just for the color? (Don't tell me that an 80GB hard drive costs $200 more than a 60GB) What is with you, Apple?

Seriously, IMO the black is ugly (but of course I still haven't seen it in the flesh), and I am disappointed that Apple decided to scrap the color idea (if it ever even existed)... Looks like they are becoming more conservative with age, as so many unfortunate people.

Anyways, enough of my griping - everything else looks fantastic; in fact, better than expected.

I think we're just getting old. LOL

For all new owners just answer me this, DOES IT HAVE THE WHINE?....(Praying)pls dont have the whine, please dont have the whine, please dont have the whine......

not very happy with that
i paid AUD $4050 for my 17"MBP ordered 10 days ago, due to arrive today. and they drpped the price by a little over $150...
im gonna call em up and see if they can do something (doubt it)

Yeah, I can understand your position. The 17" wasn't released too long ago for them to drop the price so drastically, though it is nice for consumers that haven't purchased their new MB Pros yet. I wish you good luck!

Indeed. My Core Solo mini has the smoothest "Ripple" of any Mac I've used/owned. ;)

I am absolutely shocked that Apple feel that a GMA950 is an adequate replacement for either the Radeon 9550 in the iBook or the FX5200 in the PowerBook. I think they've probably lost a lot of sales. As far as I can see, they no longer have a mid-range notebook, let alone a useful small one.

The dashboard ripple is not a valid benchmark of performance, for those who are impressed. Try any modern 3D or core-image reliant app.

I do like the design though, and the rest of the specs are very good, which makes it even more of a waste!

How is a black laptop something to flaunt??? virtually every PC laptop ever made since the dawn of time is black/dark grey. White and alu is far less common.

now it starts to make me wonder why blackborad is black originally?

a) That sucks.
b) Why do they advertise it reading DL discs when every DVD drive since around 1999 does that?

Agreed. I can understand it not being able to write DL DVDs (since that would make it "better" than the 15" MBP), but the tech specs on the apple website are on the brink of being misleading. I hope they update it soon with a clearer description.

I'm going to reserve judgement on the keyboard until i actually try one.
But I don't think it looks good at all - especially on the black MB.

The keyboard reminds me of the old ZX Spectrum
Hmm. Really?

Could anyone tell me if the bezel around the screen is any bigger than the ibook G4 (except on the top, of course)?

My visit to the Apple Store at Clarendon (VA)

I phoned to find out if they had the new 'Books in stock. The nice person reported that the FedEx truck had just delivered. I asked her to stick my name on a black one and I'd be right over.

I zipped on over, credit card in hand, recent client payment burning a hole in my pocket.

And, to my shock and despite substantial pent up consumer technolust, I didn't buy.

1) The black casing is matte... for some reason this really bugged me. Go figure.

2) The screen is glossy. And HIGHLY reflective. I prefer a matte screen (just goes to show how picky I am).

3) It's heavy... 3/4 lb. heavier than my iBook.

4) It's big... won't fit easily into my existing bags.

5) Configured with sufficient hard-drive space and RAM (needs plenty considering the integrated graphics), it's not particularly inexpensive.

Don't get me wrong... these new MacBooks are lovely machines. (The keyboard in particular is fantastic.) I was shocked that I didn't buy. But I learned something valuable about what I really want in my next portable device:

1) Small

2) Light

3) NOT a production machine... but a little productivity/communication device: browse web, email, load and store photos, light text wrangling, and iChat/Skype.

So, it looks like I'll be living with my ancient iBook awhile longer.

true just feel cheated though. havent even got the 17 MBP yet and i see the price go down. oh well, gotta live with it.

On apple's website, it says that included software is Comic Life and and Omni Outliner, anyone know what there are? Thanks!

Co-worker just walked into work after lunch with one (a black one)...

I tried the keyboard, and I definitely prefer the Al PB keyboard/tactility...

I am just so used to the feel and size of the keys...

Not saying that one can't get used to the new setup.. but (at least to me) the ol' PowerBook keys WERE THE STANDARD.

o well.. not my computer..
