I happen to find the black looks very nice and professional, but everyone has their opinion. Why does everyone hate "Dell" so much? Most laptops are black, including the Thinkpads, of which I find to be very high quality.

Comic life is an app bundled with the iSight, and Omni Outliner is a program that makes writing outlines (taking notes, organizing) simple. Minor apps, I'm surprised they didn't bundle iLife.

EDIT: My mistake, it costs $50 to have iLife preinstalled, not for the software.

they're charging more for the black model because (as of right now) it will be the ONLY black computer available from apple. just like the black ipod nanos and regular ipods sold very well because it was something different!! people will (and already have) spent the extra money for ONLY the black case because it's gorgeous and different.

mr

yeah, I am sure it's the only black apple in the world you might want to eat. but that doesn't mean it's not overpriced. I can't imagine why's so much difference between black and white (I have no problem for other colors)

I am absolutely shocked that Apple feel that a GMA950 is an adequate replacement for either the Radeon 9550 in the iBook or the FX5200 in the PowerBook. I think they've probably lost a lot of sales. As far as I can see, they no longer have a mid-range notebook, let alone a useful small one.
Is Intel Integrated GMA950 not as good as Radeon 9550 (current iBook's graphic card) or FX5200 (12" PB's graphic card)? MacBook's GMA950 has the shared memory up to 64 MB, while iBook's dedicated graphic card has 32 MB. This looks like you get some and lose some at the same time. I think my tablet PC has GMA950 (but 128 MB for shared memory), which has a decent graphic performance (I don't run games on my computer so far).

By the way, is MacBook already on Apple stores' shelf? I might just stop by this evening to check it out.

one question:
will quake 3 (yes 3, not 4) run fine with the integrated graphics?

i don't know anything about those integrated graphic thingies...

That's why I bought the white one and not the black one... people recognize the white as being "Not a PC". :) Plus the $150 extra just didn't seem worth it.

Clamshell?

I gather from the specs that you can span the MacBook desktop onto an external monitor (which beats the old "mirroring" capability of the old iBooks).

But, can you run the MacBook with the lid closed and with an external monitor (clamshell mode)? I presume you can do this, but can anyone confirm?

Cheers

OK, not exactly like the ZX Spectrum
But that was the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw the black MB pics.

Guess i will have to go see one in real life.
But for some reason the keyboard makes it look like a toy.

Got back a short time ago from the Apple Store with my shiny new MacBook ($1299). :D

So I'm halfway through disassembling it to put in a 100GB 7200RPM hard drive when I could tell the hard drive slides right out through the battery compartment! The drive is plainly visible when you remove the battery. I saw it initially, but though no way you'd be able to just slide the thing right out, so I didn't even try. LOL So don't get a hard drive upgrade from Apple, folks! Upgrading the hard drive is a piece of cake, even easier than installing the memory! I picked up my 100GB 7200rpm SATA from buy.com for $180 shipped a couple weeks back (Hitachi).

Since I had removed so many screws, I was able to lift the keyboard part way up to peek in at the processor, and it appears to be soldered to the main board. I didn't see any socket. Too bad.

I'd post picts, but I forgot my digital camera. I'll see if someone around here has one I can borrow.

keep up the good work. But don't you think a 7200rpm a bit loud?

Didn't buy a dongle or I would confirm myself but the salesperson at the Apple Store said this was possible (first time on the Mac/iBook).

I've got Aperture running in the background on my spanky new MacBook - just importing some RAW files.

Works perfectly.

are you sure about that? with 512M memory? because i was asking about the Aperture run on MacBook, someone told it should run fine. so i placed my order this afternoon use my student discount, black MB and Aperture.

i was worried, but im so excited now :D

Oh, they do have iLife, those were just the two I didn't recognize. thank you.

It will be interesting to see how the Macbooks with a plastic case handle the furnace heat that eminates out of a 2.0Ghz core duo. The Pro's have Aluminum cases to disipate heat and are hot as it is. More to come I'm sure...larger and potentially noisy fans maybe?

I think the heat issues on the MPB may be *because* of the aluminium cases, in conjunction with the poor job of applying thermal paste. The minis have the core duo as well, and they don't get that warm. I think they just botched either the design or more likely the assembly of the cooling system on the 15.

BobMcBob said:
Now we have to wait and see if these have the same horrible heat and whine problems found in the MBP that Apple still hasn't fixed and continues to ignore.

You mean the 15. For the most part it sounds like the 17 is free of these.

$400 for 20GB and super drive is too much.

Well, good thing it only costs $250 to add both of those.

512 are the minimum for the basic configuration. But I think that's good enough for many many users.

I disagree. I think only a few users will be OK with 512, and there will be tons of complaints about how slow the machine is. They *really* need to make 1 gig standard on all intel machines.

Nice updates, but charging a premium for a color isn't right.

Why not? It's something cosmetic. If the demand is there, people will pay for it. I don't see ANY reason for complaining about the color markup, if you don't like it, nothing's stopping you from buying white and saving the money.

No, the GMA950 'borrows' 64MB+ (it varies depending on need, at least under Windows) of your high-latency system memory. The 9550 and FX5200 have dedicated, fast, low-latency video memory. Add to that a more more mature GPU design, hardware texture and lighting and more programmable pixel and vertex shaders and pipelines and the performance of either of the old GPUs under modern benchmarks on Windows should be at least 3-4x that of an Intel GMA.

is it just me or does the keyboard look funny? It looks like the keys are much more spaced out then the 12 inchers. Is this due to the wider display and there fore wider space the key board needed to cover?

They almost look like PC Jr. chicklet keys. What's going on?

I can confirm this. The entire case of the black model is matte black. However, on the white model, the outside is the traditional gloss white, while the inside is matte white.

That's great.

Now, with a more durable finish, I would gladly upgrade to the black model instead of the white. The price difference is worth it for a better finish.
