im sure its got iLife '06

just checked - it does come with stock standard apps bundled (inc trial version of iWork 06)
I thought iLife costs $50 extra when building the laptop, but I checked again, and it's only to have it preinstalled ... that's crazy *laughs*

And yes, you can use the Macbook in clamshell mode.

HD Replacement Instructions??

Got back a short time ago from the Apple Store with my shiny new MacBook ($1299). :D

So I'm halfway through disassembling it to put in a 100GB 7200RPM hard drive when I could tell the hard drive slides right out through the battery compartment! The drive is plainly visible when you remove the battery. I saw it initially, but though no way you'd be able to just slide the thing right out, so I didn't even try. LOL So don't get a hard drive upgrade from Apple, folks! Upgrading the hard drive is a piece of cake, even easier than installing the memory! I picked up my 100GB 7200rpm SATA from buy.com for $180 shipped a couple weeks back (Hitachi).

Since I had removed so many screws, I was able to lift the keyboard part way up to peek in at the processor, and it appears to be soldered to the main board. I didn't see any socket. Too bad.

I'd post picts, but I forgot my digital camera. I'll see if someone around here has one I can borrow.

Please share more details!! I am very interested in performing this upgrade!!!

Thanks!!
Joseph

I am absolutely shocked that Apple feel that a GMA950 is an adequate replacement for either the Radeon 9550 in the iBook or the FX5200 in the PowerBook. I think they've probably lost a lot of sales. As far as I can see, they no longer have a mid-range notebook, let alone a useful small one.

The dashboard ripple is not a valid benchmark of performance, for those who are impressed. Try any modern 3D or core-image reliant app.

I do like the design though, and the rest of the specs are very good, which makes it even more of a waste!

you are alone here, i guess this time, just cheer up. :D

Have you seen these pictures yet?

Those are anything but high-res. Anyone know about the dual-channel ram?

In regards to the picture with the Dell, it looks nothing like the Inspiron. The MB looks much more handsome, especially with the widescreen layout. The glossy screen looks WORLDS better than the matte screen, amazes me some people don't like them...given the glare is bad, but the colors and clarity are amazing.

You're mixing up iLife and iWork. iLife comes on all Macs preinstalled. iWork you have to pay the extra for.

Cool!

COOL! I will buy one soon! Great prices aswell. I might stick with the 2.0 ghZ one, THAT's great even better processor than my iMac, I'll sell mine.

The only thing that is maybe expekted but not so good is the graphics, I don't think you can play so many advanced PC games as you can on iMac or MacBook Pro with that graphics, which games do you think you can play with it? World Of Warcraf? Or which games can you play with it?

Is it worth to buy the black one instead? It seems kinda cool.

WOW this is great news!

I got mine

Well everyone, my less than 2 week old iBook 12" went back today and I'm writing this on my brand new 2.0GHz White Macbook!!!

So far so good, the keyboard is taking some getting used to (It's really nice to use just different to what i'm used to) overall the initial impression is 1000% better than the ol' iBook!

Interesting though, they still had a lot of 12 and 14" iBooks in Regent Street London Apple Store???? Only explanation is that they only got their Macbook shipment in at 4pm this afternoon and so may be getting rid of their iBooks tonight?

Anyways i'm off to get it all set up how I like it and do some boot camp/parallels testing:) :) :) :) :) :)

Thanks for the pics, I guess both black and white is not as good looking as old powerbook then. I'm really dying to get one, but can't make up my mind now. why not they just make a cheaper powerbook version with smaller hard drive, smaller screen, I can deal with everything I have with my powerbook except duo core intel (with windows installed, my my god) .

Can I just change powerbook chip to intel ? Sign.

that's a boat, not a laptop...

What about those of us who have to log this brick around every day? The weight specs on this machine are a joke!

Might have to switch to a Thinkpad instead... What a disappointment! I was hoping that Apple finally releases an ultraportable machine.

No wonder the AAPL stock is diving today.

It's a mid-range laptop. It's over $1,000, it has a reasonably powerful, up-to-date, CPU, decent memory, good sized screen, and decent disk space. Laptops generally aren't graphics powerhouses. You can get laptops with decent graphics cards for the same kind of prices, but they tend to have poorer CPUs.

Don't make the mistake of comparing the specs to a desktop. The Mac mini is a piece of crap (relatively speaking, that is, you can get a more powerful PC for less), but the Macbook is relatively normal in terms of spec/$, in an environment where most buyers are concerned about size, wieght, and battery life, and the ability to play UT2004 at 25fps is a secondary requirement.

This is supposed to be a replacement for the 12" PB. Personally I don't think it is, but the GeForce Go 5200 in the 12" PB gets its arse kicked by the GMA950. That GFX chip in the 12" PB is seriously ****e.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

Why not add a Core Solo model for $899? People would buy them in droves! And I'm not so sure about the glossy screen.

for the first 20 mins or so i was mesmerized by the black, but no.
the 2.0 white is by far the best buy .

Subtotal $1,549.00
Specifications
2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
100GB Serial ATA drive

I'm disappointed, for three reasons:

Integrated video (no comments on how it's still as good, if not better than, many video cards; it's still integrated).

Glossy screen: I don't like these on any laptop, and this is no exception.

keyboard: Looks bad, though i could easily be wrong.

Rest of the specs look great, but the integrated video is a mistake. I don't feel like I've missed out by already having an iBook.

I gather from the specs that you can span the MacBook desktop onto an external monitor (which beats the old "mirroring" capability of the old iBooks).

But, can you run the MacBook with the lid closed and with an external monitor (clamshell mode)? I presume you can do this, but can anyone confirm?

Cheers
SL

nice questions, I want to know too. Anyone confirm?

Yes, it does spanning and closed lid operations. You can confirm this by actually looking at the Apple site!

I called both apple stores in Toronto today and they won't have them till next week. I was kinda hoping to walk home with one today, but I can wait for my order to come in.

Ordered the standard black one and the vga adapter to span to my second display.

I am so very broke right now!

PEOPLE there IS a Mic!! It's built in with iSight!! Please, let this die already.

Other than that, great update! Im happy!

Agreed. Some people are not using their heads. Apple didn't just add iSight and promote video conferencing out of the box only to have us do "silent movies." You don't need to "think different," folks - JUST THINK!

I rely heavily on my Vodafone Mobile Connect Card so that rules out all Apple laptops for me :(

Its a PCMCIA card, and I dont beleive they have plans to make them any different soon as most laptops still have PCMCIA slots

Gonna have to stick with my 15" PB (which I upgraded to from my 12" just for the PCMCIA slot)

There are a number of possible options

1. Use a standard 3G phone over bluetooth.

If you go for a 3G phone you can use the scripts from here (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/) or the software from Novamedia (http://www.novamedia.de/e_pages/e_produkte_mac_l2n.html) who wrote the original (very poor) Vodafone software. The new software looks a lot nicer

or

2. Wait for one of the ExpressCards for UMTS/HSDPA to be released. They are coming ..

"4/10/2006: Novatel Wireless has announced the development of EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) 3G external ExpressCards/34 modules. The company has delivered pre-commercial samples of both its EV-DO and HSDPA ExpressCards, which are being developed pursuant to agreements and purchase orders from the company's principal customers - laptop manufacturers and major carriers." - http://www.novatelwireless.com/

3. Bizarrely a USB adapter is available. (No Mac drivers as yet though)

http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/usb/u132.php

"The U132 is ideal for customers who live in an area without high speed wired internet access, or whose laptop does not offer a PCMCIA/CardBus slot, such as the new Dell latitude X1 models."

It is pictured with a Voda card plugged in.

I've got the Vodafone card but find it clunky to use (especially abroad) and plan to get a 3G phone to try out.
