Great year for Apple. First Intel iMac, MacBook Pro and Intel Mac Mini, then MacBook. What's next - MacPro?

It is great all these computers have great speed.

Some technical details on the GMA 950:
from: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mobile/display/centrino-duo_7.html

The graphics core in the i945GM is somewhat different from the one in the last-generation i915GM chipset and is indicated by the different name, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (the older was called GMA 900). You shouldn’t look for any dramatic changes in the new graphics core, though. Its architecture has remained the same. GMA 950 has 4 pixel pipelines and is capable of mapping up to 4 textures per clock cycle. Like GMA 900, it provides hardware support for Pixel Shader 2.0 and software support for Vertex Shader 3.0 and T&L. GMA 950, and GMA 900 too, is a fully DirectX 9 compatible graphics accelerator.

You may wondering what is the difference between the new and older graphics cores, but the answer is simple – frequency. Besides the higher system memory frequency (which is also used as graphics memory), the graphics core frequency has been raised, too. The GMA 900 core worked at 333MHz at the maximum (the frequency could be lowered to save power), while GMA 950 can be clocked at 400MHz.

i hope they eventually make a high end model.
They do. It's called the MacBook Pro.

Apple doesn't offer 7 or 8 different notebook lines, and this is the price of a specialty computer company. You can't cover all the bases with 3 notebooks. As with everything, buy what suits your needs. Sometimes that ends up not being an Apple, and that's okay.

im sure the screen so so bright that you can see fine without the backlit keys....although they would look sweeeeeeeet :p

Most don't have their screen at 100% brightness when using in low light conditions.

Yupp it would be very cool :p But I guess that would make the MacBook more expensive :p

The graphics, come on, I mean sure it is maybe cheaper with this but come on a videocard should be standard for laptops now.

even so, there's a lit up screen right there in front of it. i guess i wouldnt have a hard time seeing it cuz i have better than normal vision. just my opinion

b) Why do they advertise it reading DL discs when every DVD drive since around 1999 does that?

Because if they don't, some jackass will start complaining on boards like this that it doesn't! Hell, we've already seen complaints that it doesn't have digital audio in (it does) a microphone (it does).

Aperture and Motion are not (officially) supported on the GMA 950.

And a guy just confirmed that it runs just fine on his brand new MB. Sounds like a non-issue to me.

I am absolutely shocked that Apple feel that a GMA950 is an adequate replacement for either the Radeon 9550 in the iBook or the FX5200 in the PowerBook. I think they've probably lost a lot of sales. As far as I can see, they no longer have a mid-range notebook, let alone a useful small one.

That's probably because apple has actually used the machine, unlike you. These machines are absolutely usefull, with the lone exception of gaming. I doubt they've lost any sales, they've probably gained more than they would have with discrete graphics and higher prices.

Really, you're just complaining that it doesn't play 3d games well.

we detail in this blog how a Black MacBook with the same specs as a White MacBook (80BG hard drive, 2.0GHz Core Duo, super-drive) is $150 more. Will people pay $150 just for color?

Your question is answered by this thread. Correct me if I'm wrong, but out of the people reporting back that they've bought one (as well as the pictures online), more have bought the black ones.

are you sure about that? with 512M memory? because i was asking about the Aperture run on MacBook, someone told it should run fine. so i placed my order this afternoon use my student discount, black MB and Aperture.

Doubt the 512 will be kind to it, it doesn't take much to max it out. I'd definitely recommend going to at least a gig.

Don't make the mistake of comparing the specs to a desktop. The Mac mini is a piece of crap (relatively speaking, that is, you can get a more powerful PC for less), but the Macbook is relatively normal in terms of spec/$

I'd agree on the mini solo, but the duo is a great machine for the price. We're talking about a box that rivals the slower dual g5's for less than half the price.

Yes, I'm a complete noob. What's so bad about integrated graphics? Can someone explain?

They're not great for games. That's it. If you're not a gamer, you'll likely never notice the difference.

A quick question for anyone that can help. If I have no interest in playing games, what other applications will be hindered by integrated graphics? Where will a macbook pro really outperform a macbook?

Only apps that use 3d acceleration, like Motion. But I doubt most people would want to do 3d rendering or similar video tasks on such a small screen anyway. Any apps using just 2d graphics will run great, including HD video.

Excellent, excellent value. The integrated graphics don't really matter - at a machine this spec'ed.

Far better than MacBook Pro.

I'm curious to whether virtualization has been disabled as in the Mac Mini... anyone know?

Just ordered mine -- 2.0 ghz, 100GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, Superdrive, etc.

Now for the 2 weeks of "fun" while waiting! :D

some people think apple SHOULD do such and such to their computer line. "why don't they support this?" "why don't they support that?" "such and such company offers this...why doesn't apple?"

i'm not against criticizing features of the MB...heck, i wish it had a discrete graphics card, more standard ram, etc...but it doesn't. but i still think it's a big improvement over the old ibook line...some people are asking for features that aren't even in the MB PRO or any apple product!! that's what i find tiring...

You are right. There are some people who want solutions to niche problems and demand x1900 in a £500 computer.
However, I think most of us are asking very reasonable questions about the top model mainly (I believe that the base model with the edu discount is the best value for money Apple computer as far back as I can remember):
- Who is this top macbook for? Apple enthusiasts will, of course buy it (if they need it now, or will wait for revB in January if they can afford to live with their old laptops till then - which is what I'll be doing). Your average consumer (which includes light gamers) will be shocked to find that they are being asked to fork out £1,028 so that they can get 10-15 fps on Doom 3 at the lowest res with min settings.
- Is it a fish or a fowl? Is it an ultra-portable with 6-7 hour capacity (in wireless mode) or a bargain-basement note-book? At the moment, it is neither.
- In all honesty, if you were a system builder, would you ever put together a computer with the latest/gratest CPU and the worst possible graphics card? Or buy a 7900GT for a Celeron D system? Is this what Apple mean by "thinking different"?

The fact is that Apple have left a gap that the G4 12" used to occupy - they will fix it in January, but let's not defend the indefensible.

The benchmarks are nothing surprising. They're being compared to modern graphics hardware and they perform, as one would expect, at the bottom. The benchmarks don't compare integrated graphics to older cards or low end DirectX 8 (not 9) GPUs that tend to appear in mobile platforms.

The purpose of integrated graphics isn't to deliver the best performance, but to deliver the latest API capabilities at an affordable price. Choosing the last generation cores (which run most low-end graphics setups) is a trade of modernity for performance, which locks you into a faster progression into obsolescence.

Co-worker just walked into work after lunch with one (a black one)...

I tried the keyboard, and I definitely prefer the Al PB keyboard/tactility...

I am just so used to the feel and size of the keys...

Not saying that one can't get used to the new setup.. but (at least to me) the ol' PowerBook keys WERE THE STANDARD.

o well.. not my computer..

I need to try it too. I LOVE the AluBook keyboard, more than regular desktop keyboards. I have a Rev. A 15", will need to decide whether upgrade is worth it... (since this one actually works fine for me.)

I wonder how the MacBook does with the Parallels Windows virtualization software- I think the Mac Mini Duo was intentionall crippled in some regard (don't remember the specifics.)

Thats unknown until people get there hands on them and test things out. I don't think anyone has them yet.

Sure they do, some guy posted that he maxed out his credit card at his local Apple shop buying a Macbook and took it home that same day, and ive seen galleries of people who posted pictures of theirs at home.

wow

I just read 1073 posts, guess all this rain is good for something

Kudos to Apple for doing core duo across the line, these look pretty good. I think I am going to go for the 2.0 White (but want to see the black first) and then upgrade the ram and hard drive my self.

Apple Version:
1299 base price plus 2gig of RAM and 120gb drive = 2049
My Version
$1299 base price plus 2gig of RAM@$150 and 120gb drive@$150 = $1599

I just want CompUsa to get it for their return policy. I don't have an Apple store close anyway, so it won't matter to me. Probably need to trek down to Salem, NH to look at them and then see if the CompUsa there has one.

almost 1100 posts... this is the biggest thread i've ever seen on this site.

Edit: ok, OVER 1100 posts. 5 people posted while i was writing this.
