This question seems to have been lost in the thread again so I will ask one more time.

How will the core duo chip compare with a P4 running at 3Ghz?

And a new question,
Putting legality aside, will a copy of XP that came with a dell work with Boot Camp? I know apple says it won't but I thought I had read here from people who did get their spare install disks to work. Am I making this up?

Woooooo! Just ordered my MacBook 2.0 GHz from MacMall.com. Seems as though they've got them in stock now too, so hopefully I'll be getting mine sometime mid to late next week! :D

used powerbook or new macbook?

can someone please advise? deciding between buying a used or refurbished mac (from mac store) 12" powerbook (60GB) with good specs or a new mac book.

thoughts?

Don't you guys get it? The lack of dedicated graphics, the black price premium... it is all about profits!
My goodness, sometimes I think there is no corporate person on thee forums... just a bunch of students!
Apple is a publicly traded corporation, whose main purpose is to make profits for its owner - shareholders. And when they cease making profits, steve jobs will not have a job! The major shareholders of apple are investment companies who mostly use.... windows!
Geez... the lack of dedicated grpahics and the black MB price premium is solely about profits...
I love to see comparisons to dell and others...Apple's gross margins are much higher than dell and others.. And apple gets away with it! It is solely for profits! Hence, the cost difference between a ACD and a dell of the same size with the same screen.

Geez! It is solely profits.. no other reason. They charge the most they think they can to get the most profits for the owners of the company - a bunch of windows using shareholders and investment pros/houses.

Black macbook - it is for profits.
Lack of dedicated graphics - another business decision.
That is it, end of story,

OK, now I am going to go order my MB, thanks

I would pay Apple some "profits" if they would just make it a build to order option to get a MacBook with a better video card. Why can't they make it an option - even charge a premium for it!? I'd pay it, cuz I want small form factor (13.3") with a pro graphics card. I don't like the metal MacBook Pros. I want a white, plastic, MacBook. Geez, Apple, give us more build to order options - like Dell does! We'll pay you the profits!

I didn't give any time to answer, but if you have any knowledge on this question I'd love to hear your input.

It will always come down to the same questions:

  • What do you want to do with it?
  • What is your budget?
  • Are you a true believer?
  • ;-)

...
So are all these programs gonna run smoothly? Or should I save up for a pro?

These sound like modern 3D games, so they will run appallingly badly on the current MacBooks. Ignore anyone who says otherwise, because they have no idea what they're talking about.

If you're willing to put up with 10-20fps at 800x600, then yeah maybe you'll scrape by. If that's not acceptable, then you'll need to get a MacBook Pro or wait for a revision to the MacBook which actually has a decent graphics card.

The only thing I'm sad about is the lowest end not having the option for an upgrade for a superdrive. Is a super drive really $200 more? I wouldn't use the MB for games just lightweight typewritter and such. Maybe some Doom II because I'm a geek like that.

no

It will ruin your MacBook.

Those photos of the excess thermal paste are mis-labeled.

It isn't thermal paste, it's pus from the infections caused by using stolen software in a Mac. The viruses and bacteria infect the CPU chip, leading to oozing pustules as the Mac purity tries to drive out the illegally copied XP protozoan.

Just say no, pay for the software that you use.

Build to freaking order: Yes! Size not guessing what we want to use them for

Exactly... Apple knows how to do this but they won't and it goes beyond profits to some old school product line mind set that they are stuck in. I keep expecting them to break out of it but instead they do this bizarre Macbook and Pro split.

All built to order according to size not their guess at audience use because we, believe it or not can figure out what we want to use our computers for and how much we want to mix and match our personal and professional use:

The mantra goes like this

Build to order:

  • iPods,
  • phones,
  • handhelds
  • Ultra-portables with full OS
  • Small (13")
  • Medium (15")
  • Large (17")

Go with the MacBook.

The Intel chip is far above the G4 and everything in the new notebook will serve you better for years to come. Besides the integrated Grpahics there is really no competition between the two.

Nice one. It's true, you don't really own that software you are just licensing it to run on something in your possession. One one thing in your possession. It's not a family pack ;-). And don't play that cd on any other cd player either, it might get ***** (what?) too.

Isn't there a way to pay one licensing fee for everything? Sort of like ASCAP or is it something else now? What if we could only play certain radio stations on certain brands of radios? I know XM and Sirius are heading in that direction but something is a little screwy.

I think you are oversimplifying the profit / shareholder relationship. You didn't even mention dividends (which Apple hasn't paid it's shareholders since 1995) and/or stock price.

yes it was BTO

Thanks for the reply, yep I added 1 gig of ram so I guess thats whats delaying shippment

QUOTE=DesmoDog]The status most likely says something along the lines of "estimated shipping by may 23". I ordered mine (white 2.0 with no options) yesterday morning and it shipped early this morning...

But if it's a BTO then i'm not sure how it works and you're on your own. ;)

BTW: The status on mine orignially estimated shipping by the 23rd and delivery by the 31st. The FedEx tracking now says estimated delivery around noon on Friday 5/19. :D[/QUOTE]

That's interesting, can you say a little more about the 11 year dividend gap? Is that in any way typical?

Red MacBook

I doubt the Red MacBook is the prize for the 2000th post....if there even is a prize....

Unless you're reasonably sure you'll want to burn a DVD away from home, it's better to use an external burner. First, you'll probably get more performance. Second, you'll get more value. Third, you can get a dual-layer burner. And fourth (the main reason, for me), if your MacBook is lost or stolen, you still have your DVD burner!

For the same reasons, I'll be using an external hard drive to provide my college daughter extra with capacity.

2000th Post

A MacBook would be a nice prize. White, not Black, and even if there was a red, certainly not red. :D
