my guess, fwiw:

This month they come with the aluminum MacBooks; get the "green cred" for offing the plastique, and bump the speed and whatever else the new case design facilitates, portwise. MacBook Pro's get a new keyboard and trackpad (MBA style), along with speed bumps to 2.6/2.8 overclocked, but otherwise unchanged.

At the big party in January, MBP's get their case redesign and champagne corks are heard popping across the land...

At this point, I do not have any confidence in the rumors that the MBP will be more modified than to have the panel where the kbd and trackpad are replaced with a new one accommodating the new hardware. The rest of the thing is what it is for now, and the updating of the MacBook will suck all the oxygen out of the room for this announcement anyway.

If there are any other changes in the Macbook case (thinning it out, etc.) - hell, even if there aren't - the rumors about skimping out on firewire ports, etc. may only apply to the MacBook anyhow.

The silver-Aluminum-across-the-board look for now will place the new MB in higher esteem and cause people to rush to purchase, since it's a great deal for such high-prestige goods with plenty of power. Look for black-anodized aluminum when the MBP remodel hits in January with substantially new innards to go along with the "new" factor.

Hasn't Apple pretty much always run one final version of its pro laptops with a grossly overclocked, hotter-than-hell CPU revision? I recall them having done this at least as far back as the tibook. What makes anyone think this is going to be any different?

Especially given the MacBook is going to be having such a coming out party and the green-credential boasting will be in full swing? No company as PR-conscious as Apple would step on that kind of guaranteed free media coverage with another new product intro (MBP) at the same time. Thus, I don't think the MBP will offer more than a perfunctory speed bump and change of keyboard/trackpad hardware to conform with cost considerations. Parts-bin engineering all the way, baby!

The Brick

Hi, newbie here,
What if the Brick is a slimmer/smaller version of the Mac Pro? Maybe with a price reduction? That could definitely break some Windows.

welcome to the forums bud:D

like a tower?
this would be great, definitetel but why would they name it brick???

why is everyone freaking out about apple not releasing new macbooks this month?

Makes sense to wait until the current financial crisis and elections are over in early november if they are doing a big notebook revamp.

And why say that no-one will buy the current macbooks? Didn't apple just have their best month ever for macbook sales?

The best thing they could do immediately in my opinion is to do a small bump in ram/harddrive, and lower the cost on each model by $200.

it seems to me that only a very small amount of the general public actually obsess over the comparitive specs to PC notebooks. Look at the iphone & ipods, underspec compared to similar devices - but its about the user experience, software and marketing - and the cool factor of course.

Having said that - apple really needs to kill the combo drive for good in the entry level macs.

Sorry, but if the macbooks were already set to come out on Oct. 14th that is not going to change now. Rumors have stated that the new macbooks have already been shipped into the US. If this is the case, Apple would not have an ample supply of the current macbooks to ship through the holiday season. If apple really is switching to an aluminum casing, the black and white macbooks are already out of production and only what is left in inventory will be sold via Apple until the new release date and then through third party retailers.

Apple is not going to just hault production of a new product or sit on it for three months hoping the economy improves, when APPLE has done well, recording record sales and currently having the highest market share in its notebook history. Further, the largest growing demographic for apple notebooks is the COLLEGE crowd. The economic crisis has not put an end to student loans and 2k limit credit cards and students will continue to get whatever apple throws at them.

Hey thanks jojo!
yeah, I was thinking a tower or a redesigned Mac Pro that is smaller and quieter. It could interfere with the iMac if it's a new computer but if it's a nice redesign maybe the cheapest version would be very appealing to creative pros with a smaller budget.

I'm not wondering if brick refers to breaking down walls/barriers. In turn either 1) partnering with a unexpect company, 2) adding a new business area, or 3) breaking with convention and giving something new (e.g. allowing laptops to dock into iMac like enclosures. Yes, unlikely, buy my point is something extreme).

fyi macbooks are releasing for sure this month. A bud of mine who works for apple confirmed it.

I recently went shopping for a new Windows laptop for someone who will remain nameless... In going around to the various purveyors of PC laptops (non-apple variety) I was struck by how U-G-L-Y most of them are!

Think about the sleek, minimalist, utilitarian style of even the most simple white plastic iBook, and compare it to the sticker festooned, port heavy, flimsy, heavy, bulgy, crapware-laden poorly styled (if styled at all) PC laptops are out there. Why would someone buy such in-elegant devices? Besides me, buying for someone else?

Incidently, when I presented the PC laptop to she-who-is-not-named-but-who-wanted-a-windows -laptop, and I told her it had Vista on it... She had me return it! True story.

I hope they do update the MacBook. I have 2.4 GHZ BlackBook and would like to see it being the last of a generation, then when the new one is well into it's cycle, say the third revision, I will upgrade.

New products always have bugs

Well the MacMini is well overdue an update :)

if a new macbook dosent come out before or on october 14th. ill be getting a black macbook and getting 4gb of ram or whatever.

i dont need anything fancy anymore

that's real, the black ones do look sick. but how disappointed would you be if the new macbooks were released a week later for a lower price and a glass multi-touch pad? It's a touch choice that I'm hoping none of us will have to make...

Well the MacMini is well overdue an update :)

You mean the macmini is overdue for a discontinuation, right?

What if the codename refers to the mac mini? then i think the code name would refer to the form factor

THE RUMOR SAYS THAT CODENAME "BRICK" REFERS TO MACBOOKS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!

im with you. im tired of waiting. black macbook all the way!

no
i really hope it stays because i think the mac mini is awesome:D

I love the mini too, so I'm hoping for either a revamped model or an Intel take on the G4 cube as a replacement.

Then again, I've wanted a consumer-level desktop from Apple since the death of the G4's!

Oh well, a man can dream...

Why? What's wrong with 16:10? I quite like having more height...

There is not much difference and I would like a little bit wider screen:

Keeping My Sanity While I Wait

I'm switching from Windoze PCs to the MBP. I'm waiting for the release of the updated MBP, and I've worked out a plan to keep my sanity while I'm waiting. The plan is pretty simple: I'm buying a MBP by the end of October, regardless of new releases or rumors of new releases. If the new release comes out by then, I'll buy a new model. If not, I'll buy the current model. Either way, it's a step up from PC hardware. And I see the rumored features as a "nice to have" rather than a "must have".

In the world of technology, there is always a good reason to wait on a purchase. There's always an update or a new release just around the corner. You can go nuts trying too hard to time it. In these situations, I pick a deadline and buy what's available when the deadline arrives. I followed this strategy when buying my 2G iPhone in early March 2008 and I'm REALLY happy with how that turned out...for me, the extra weeks of having an iPhone outweighed the value of the 3G update (especially considering that the total cost of ownership over a two-year period is essentially a "push" in my situation). I suspect I'm in the same situation with the MBP. I'll wait a bit...if the new release comes out, I'll buy it. If not, I'm sure I'll be content for several years to come with the current MBP. Coming from a Windoze-based laptop, it's a win either way.

Fyi He/She works in cuppertino, the apple headquarters. I'm better off not talking about which department.

FYI unless the supposed he/she designed it, engineered it / parts for it, or worked on marketing for it, they wouldn't know it existed.

I don't know why you're "better off" withholding this info. from us, unless Steve has some black vans posted in front of your house and is haxxin' your internets...

Very well said... I've always believed this -

You'll love a MBP either way; but if you end up with the current model, watch out for one of the ornery 8600 cards...

I don't want to scare you into thinking they ALL have this problem, because they most certainly don't; but I've been rather unlucky with 2 of them.

If the new MBP has the same layout as the macbooks, especially if the keys are black and do not match the color of the computer, there is no way in hell I am buying one.

My old mbp crashed two weeks ago and I'm anxiously awaiting the new mbp. They better not let me down with the design or I'll seriously consider switching back.

New Macs (except for the iMac) are so long overdue...

Comon, Apple give us our new toys!
