A bit dissapointed.....

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. With the exception of the introduction of the i7 on the high end, I think the elimination of the 24" form factor is a mistake (imac). I would never buy a 20-21 wide-screen. IMHO the wide screen 16:9 screen ratio (in the 20"-21"size) is not very practical for everyday computing such a web-surfing or viewing/creating documents. You would get far more usable screen area on a standard ratio 19" LCD. The macbook is a bit of let down too, this a first for me to join the nay-sayers in adding that the price just is too high for what it offers. It should be $699/799 considering the lack of FW, maybe $899 if you want to make the argument that OSX is worth the extra $100-$200. Which, I would probably agree that it is. But at $999... $1000? I don't know.. I'm happy as a grasshopper that I snagged an Macbook White 2.0GHz Nvidia referb for $750! The mac mini is good, it starts getting up there but it still differentiates itself enough in form factor from anything else on the market, an i5 or i7 in the mini would have been really nice, even at a $1000. Imagining the most powerful 'Mini Computer' on the planet. :(

Well...unless the MBP gets a minor refresh (such as the 2.53 becoming the entry level model, although a 250 GB HD and 4 GB RAM might be enough to get me to purchase a 2.26 MBP)...I think I have found my first Mac.

This meets all my requirements, even if the white is a little on the feminine side. All the things I was looking for, 7 hour battery (I LIKE the internal battery...by the time I want to replace it I'll want a new laptop anyway), LED screen and multitouch trackpad are in here.

I've just check up posts on this thread, but cant see anything about battery level indicator? Do we have to say goodbye to it also :(

I think they took it out. I can't seem to find it either nor does it say anything about it on any of the images on Apple's website. That kinda sucks. I use it sometimes to do a quick check if my macbook if powered off before I take it to class. Oh well.

Not to sound dramatic, but if it doesn't have at-least either Firewire or ExpressCard then I won't be buying.

This is happening all too often now. Yesterday's model will have the one feature that for no apparent reason to the consumer Apple removes.

Time to take bets on when FireWire will be back and everyone today gets burned, again?

Agreed,
the best thing folks could do is send in feedback http://apple.com/feedback
It's not about complaining, it's about being sure Apple knows the features we want and need. In my opinion at-least FireWire 400 should be on EVERY Mac.

It's called - keeping a market for Apple Refurbs.

Apple can sell refurbished computers at a good price and have people willing to buy them.

It's sort of the "elusive" $499 Mini - well Apple has them on the Refurbished page...

I just purchased this new macbook today. I had bought a new macbook this past thursday and exchanged it today when I saw on mashable that new versions had been released.

although I'm not very skilled with it, I have to say that the picture is very very nice, and that I like the new mouse trackpad. Finally, what really makes me happy is the charging chord. I'm always scared they're going to break because they bend while charging.

I don't even know what firewall is. therefore the main reason I'm posting now is because if you're just a regular person like me who has been used to PCs and has gotten fed up because not only did her Dell crash but her HP tablet overheated and fried her motherboard... then this macbook is perfect for what you need. If you're looking for things that I doubt a regular internet surfing, document and powerpoint creating, email sending person needs, then you should probably be buying a higher end laptop. (not meant to sound mean!)

You're not the first one to say something about heat management, but come on, this is a multi billion dollar company. Do you guys honestly think they threw together a design, manufactured, and then sold it without even thinking about the issue?

OMG, duuuuuuuuuuude. The 1984 Macintosh over-heated w/out a fan. How quickly they forget. lol

I'm just teasin' you.

Patience always pays off.

The old 2.0 GHz base Mini is going to last minutes on the refurb page. The 9400M G on the low end is worth every penny.

Here is my feedback for the MacBook. While I know Apple probably won't give a damn about it, I still wanted to write it.

Dear Apple,

I am currently using a MacBook from bought new in September 2007. With the latest revision of the MacBook, firewire was omitted. Firewire is important for many people, the reasons are including but not limited to using fast external hard drives, target disk mode, and importing video from some consumer camcorders. I have used Firewire for those, and many other reasons. Transfer rates with firewire 400 are much faster and more consistent than USB 2.0 in real world usage. Ig I would like to transfer most of the contents from one Mac to another, I would not be able to easily without Firewire and target disk mode. Firewire components shouldn't cost more than $10-$30 in manufacturing. Since the current MacBook does not have FireWire, it is unlikely I will be able to upgrade to it when the time comes.

One might tell me that all I would have to do is upgrade to the 13 inch MacBook Pro. Yes, while that is a nice option, it is also more expensive, and has a lot of power I don't really need. It would be nice for Apple to once again offer Firewire across the entire product line.

I actually remember reading something from Woz (may have been in his book iWoz, deffinately worth a read) about why there was no fan. What it was though, I cannot remember. :(

No FW = Mistake

I own a BlackBook and use FW400 for all my external drives (with a FW800 option on all drives), so I would never buy another MB without FW.

In addition, the Geniuses with whom I have spoken hate the absence of FW because of the inability to put the Mac in Target Disk Mode, which I have also used when diagnosing and repairing my friend's iMac.

I was thinking the same. My brother in law has a black one from a few years back and it still looks almost brand new. Doesn't show up any dirt and hasn't discoloured at all. I would love a black one.

I think the discoloring may have been a problem with only the older macbooks, unless the same (crappy) coating is used.

Well, for me, I always like the black colour more than the white.
But then again, I like the Unibody colouring more. :)

By the way for those who say this new unibody MacBook will still crack a lot, I really think you're wrong about that. As an owner of a White MacBook since September 4, 2007, all of the cracks that came up were in places where two pieces meet. Where the palm rest meets the bottom case and where the display edge meets the outside plastic. Now that's it's a unibody enclosure, these carcks won't come up anymore. Plus, if you use a neoprene sleeve, they won't show up at all, even on the old MacBook.

Yeah, I'm the same. I have everything black. But the PB G4 isn't! Still love it even though it is rather long in the tooth now. I had a look on the Singapore Apple site. You can upgrade the macbook to 4GB/500GB and it is still less than the cheapest MBP. Makes it a much better prospect for many people I am sure!
