I was going to purchase the 13" Macbook Pro for my wife but decided to wait until this rumored update.

I guess I'll go with my original plan and get the Pro because of the SD slot, backlit keyboard, and firewire. But the biggest reason is the aluminum case. This white poly case is just butt ugly. All it needs is a Mattel sticker on it.

Wait's for new CrackBook stories to emerge in next few months.

Seriously, from a guy who used to own a Black MacBook 2.4, stay away, they overheat and then crack.

Fork out the extra dosh for a MacBook Pro Alu.

Well, the new one has the edges molded, instead of having the "top case" that sits on the edges. IMO, this redesign was to address the cracking first, and to refresh the design second.

i love the look of new iMac...now i need to speak with the "big boss" to buy the higher one for the work. I hope he would be happy tomorrow morning.

And the new White Macbook looks really nice, but still i prefer my Macbook Unibody and the Macbook Air. I think that it is not for me.

This time I think you're out of luck. Apple is going to say that removing FW is one of the things that enabled them to hit the sub-$1000 price point, and that anyone who needs it should move to the 13" pro model (which wasn't an option before).

Apple misjudged the size of the negative reaction the first time but probably not this time.

Yup, I concur 100% and I can see Apple's logic here as well. Of all my friends and all my family members I can't think of any that currently use a firewire device. People that know of and require firewire will probably have the means to buy the base 13" MBP anyway.

Of course, but FireWire is a must-have for each and every Mac. The previous model had it (FireWire 400).

Many people live just fine without FW. My wife has the original MB unibody from a year ago. Hasn't had a need for FW once. I have it in my two year old 15 MBP, but I have only used it once in that time. FW is simply not a "must have" feature for many users.

Will you buy ANY Mac, that cannot reliably transfer video, cannot reliably use an external portable HD without a separate power adaptor or engaging BOTH USB ports, cannot be easily recovered after a severe software crash accessing its internal HD in firewire target disk mode?

How much of mass production industrial costs did Apple save removing the FireWire (at least 400) port? 50 cents? 1$?

Firewire

My wife was just about due for a new MacBook, but no chance I'll buy her this one...I have 2 external firewire drives and a non-HD firewire camcorder. Dumb move Apple, dumb.

For $1000 they should give you firewire. It's not like this is some budget computer. They have an average gross margin of 36% on their products. There are cheaper notebooks that have firewire. It's a dumb move, at least from the perspective of someone who works on computers. Target disk mode is incredibly useful.

USB sucks on performance as well. FW800 beats the hell out of it; even 400 beats the hell out of it. I have a firewire compactflash reader and wow, big difference over USB.

It's enormously useful and cheap as hell to add. You can go out and buy a firewire 800 card for $20... it's WAY cheaper to add the controller onto the motherboard, and Apple gets bulk prices -- probably in the neighborhood of $5. This is more about up-selling than anything I think. For a $5 cost all machines should have it.

THIS SUCKS!

The Pound has lost value against the Dollar and the Euro since a year ago. Don't rage against Apple, rage against international currency markets and the global banking collapse.

Yup:

http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp...2291744&chddm=666157&q=CURRENCY:GBPUSD&ntsp=0

Depreciated 20% relative to the dollar in the last 2 years. Down much less in a one year span, but mostly due to a recent depreciation of the dollar (i.e. not a general strengthening of Pound Sterling against most major currencies).

Finally another topic where my avatar is welcome!

:D

Ok, fine YOU dont need firewire. Good for you. Obviously you never used it. So you dont know what youre missing. You think this amount of people mentioning its absence from this "update" are just nutzos out to complain about anything and everything?

Honestly, every single person who says "who cares about FW, i never used it" just gave away why they dont care...they never tried it.

Is this the same crappy plastic that featured on previous macbooks?

My macbook is cracked and battered to hell and I wouldn't consider buying a laptop with the same build quality ever again.

Will Leopard 10.5 work on these new Macbooks? We're in an enterprise setting, and do not support 10.6 at this point, as the software used here will not work on 10.6. At this point, we been wiping the drives on the new Macs and installing Leopard 10.5 on them.

Anyone want to venture a guess on this?

Om nom nom...

What's that sound? It's cannibalization...

So basically you're paying $200 for a FW port, SD card slot, and a smaller hard drive on the 13" MBP now...

This is an awesome upgrade to the MacBook. But the no FW really bugs me.

There have to be some differences between consumer and pro, a big complaint has been that the new pro's are too much alike the MacBook. I bough the MacBoon pro 13'' 2.53, this is a fantastic computer, solid powerful, great for Uni and home and anything else I want to throw at it... including firewire, sd slot... My only gripe, one audio connecter has to do both headphone and mic, but since most headsets are USB, does this really matter?

I take a MacBook with a user replaceable battery anyday. Call me old school but other than that, very nice.

I've been using a 13'' Macbook pro, the battery lasts all day, without having to back off. The WiFi seems to have better power handling (consumes on demand) than the previous MacBook. This Macbook seems to be using the same technology, rolled out fir in the 17'' MacBook pro, the the others... I think it has been tested well, and the promise of a 5 year lifespan.... well... It's also lighter then the old one!

If it has a different manufacturing process its not the same build quality. Just because its the same material doesn't automatically make it the same structure.
