Some services (e.g. file sharing and others) can be enabled in System Preferences in the standard macOS, but web-server (Apache), mail server and some others are only in the macOS Server, because most people don't setup mail servers anyway. You can still use the mail and web servers from standard macOS, but you have to configure and start and stop those services from the Terminal, unless you install macOS Server.

True, everything can be done from the terminal but many people cannot fiddle with it (I like terminal, but most people don't find BSD so friendly :) ). I was mostly thinking of services installed from 3rd party applications/utilities like vpn clients that create services in OS that autostart during boot etc. Sometimes, even with the application uninstalled, some of them remain, or there are cases where there is no need to run (like some autoupdate services that you might don't want to run on their own).

It would be nice if there was a utility in standard macOS showing all them and allow to administer them.

Shouldn't the wish list include fixing the long term bugs?? Or MR only cares about cosmetic features...
We all want bugs fixed. They asked for features.

You mean like what the server version should be?

Can we wait more than a year between releases?

Yeah 2 years, now it takes 2 years to fix all bugs of rushed releases anyway. And once its usable they release a new alpha version to fix during the year we wait for latest alpha

hello Internet Apple Community (IAC). i hope you're doing okay.

here is my feature list for macOS. #1 would be a dream come true.

1 ticker tape (on any screen including lock screen) that would display UP NEXT info like events, reminders, wake alarm, and other info like new messages, missed call, current location when traveling, package delivered, calories spared (do this for iOS, watchOS, & tvOS as well)

2 work hours widget
3 batteries widget of macbook, iphone, ipad, watch, and bluetooth devices

4 Wish List app for products, media, food delivery (amazon, itunes, eat24)

5 icloud Clock app
6 icloud Health app
7 icloud Activity app

8 iOS apps and iOS games for mac (youtube, calm, super mario run)

9 Calendar app update with weather, horoscopes, time remaining, and leather theme option

10 iMessage app background wallpaper (because a sunset background would be romantic)

better ram management , 8 gigs went where ???

updated messages to ios level

and maybe a simplified multiple desktop set up , rename the desktops without having to resort to full screen apps and their limitations ??
[doublepost=1495954381][/doublepost]oh and some pretty icons etc etc , the whole os is just SO bland these days , thx mr ive...

in the old days of ios 7/8/9 you could really go to town on the desktop customisations , oscar the grouch animated trash cans etc :D

let's spruce it all up

Fix the green button bug; windows should be expanded to the maximum size possible without hiding NECESSARY access to the file menu and dock. For some reason the green button hides them. Pretty boneheaded by Apple.

thats not a bug, the green button takes you full screen its the way apple intended it to be, if you want it to work like it used to on older macs hold the option/alt key when clicking the green button.

Except there are older mac users who can't learn this and clicks the green button by mistake. And those of us who constantly have to help them get out of full screen mode.

Personally, I'd like to see a better Finder for accessing files/folders. Maybe I'm corrupted from years of Windows use, but I got hooked on an alphabetical folder view that listed folders at the top, followed by files. I'd also like to see Finder windows adjust the icon/thumbnail layout when the Finder window is resized.
Pathfinder does all this

Sure, Windows never made anyone any money .

The vast majority of Windows sales have always been OEM, not retail. It's different in corporate, but virtually no consumer has ever bought Windows 10.

Now, Apple partnering with, say, Lenovo so you could get macOS on select devices that Apple doesn't really plan to compete with anyway? That could be interesting. But that's not what the poster suggested at all.

RTFM gets you out of a lot of tricky situations and until computers are smart enough to read your brain, people are always going to have to consult documentation to understand how a piece of technology works.

The feature that I want the most: please, redo the way MacOS handles animations. I get it that the OS prioritizes rescaling the content as windows are resized but this makes animations look so choppy.

It's not so bad, were they choose better wallpapers. I'm baffled with the beauty of the Yosemite National Park. I just think that Apple did not portrayed it to its fullest in wallpapers.

Active window frame need to be differentiated from the background ones.

Hum, not sure what you mean by that. They are different.

I do remember when our sync and iTunes was separate... I think it was with my Ericsson T28i, had nice BT sync with SMS support :D - pls make iTunes light and separate again

Here's what I'd like to see:

- Replace HFS+ or at least give people the option to use something more recent with better performance and less prone to problems (even EXT4, reiserfs or btrfs will do)
- Make the UI generally more customizable
- Open up the graphics subsystem so that third party vendors can make their own drivers rather than having to rely on Apple's own rather dreadful ones
- Move away from the annual upgrade program so that you can once again start to put in major under-the-hood improvements like in 10.6

- Redesigned iTunes/Apple Music - Some MacRumors readers would like to see Apple overhaul iTunes in a big way, splitting out Apple Music and turning it into its own distinct app that's not combined with the App Store and iTunes Store.

- HomeKit - Connected home products can be controlled through Siri or a dedicated Home app on iOS devices, but on the Mac, there's no built-in way to interface with a HomeKit setup. A Home app for the Mac would be a welcome addition, and perhaps the Mac could even serve as a HomeKit hub like the Apple TV and the iPad.

- Expanded Dark Mode - macOS Sierra included a Dark Mode that darkens the dock and the drop down menus across the operating system, but several MacRumors readers would like to see an expanded Dark Mode that darkens all interface elements like Finder and Notification Center.

- Multiple docks - When using multiple displays, it would be nice to have access to separate docks for each display.

- iPad/Apple TV second screen - This is unlikely to happen, but one reader wants to use an iPad or an Apple TV as a second screen for a Mac. This suggestion overlaps with the iOS 11 wishlist, where readers said they would like to be able to use their iPads as a secondary Mac display and as a drawing tablet.

- Combined Siri/Spotlight - Several MacRumors readers would like to see Siri and Spotlight combined on the Mac, allowing for a unified search/Siri experience. With Siri integrated into Spotlight, Mac users would be able to type Siri requests and get the same search result with voice or text. Users also want to see Siri improvements, which could happen as Apple is rumored to be working on new Siri features.

- Better full screen options - For users who like to take advantage of full screen apps, better management options would be welcome. An option to open a new window in Split View from the dock or an iPad-style drag-to-close feature would improve Split View.

- Improved window management - Windows 10-style window snapping is a request that pops up multiple times across the wishlist threads. As one reader points out, window management apps like Magnet are some of the most popular in the Mac App Store, suggesting this is something a lot of Mac users would like to see added to the operating system.

- FaceTime Picture-in-picture - macOS Sierra brought picture-in-picture support to the Mac for videos, but it doesn't extend to FaceTime. That's a problem that prevents FaceTime from being used with a full screen app because the FaceTime video window doesn't stay on top.

- Messages - In macOS, there's no support for stickers or other Messages features. Adding support in the next version of macOS would bring macOS in line with iOS.

- Apple News - The Apple News app is limited to iOS devices, but it could easily be brought over to the Mac as a native app.

Bring on everything listed and can't wait for APFS !! :D:D hope it really give a noticeable speed boost to macOS like what it did to iOS 10.3. That was amazing...:):)

You can sort folders at top in list and columns view by going to Finder > Preferences. And you can have icons rearranged automatically: View > Arrange By > Name (or whatever you prefer).

I wish Apple would keep the folders on top not just when sorting by name but across all sorts.

OS X is very efficient at ram handling. The OS now compresses pages not being. Used instead of swapping so soon. This is great for apps and frameworks which are bloated to the extreme, or for dealing with memory leaks. In the old days the developer would fix memory leaks but now with memory compression developers can focus on new features instead.

There's no viable business model in selling a consumer operating system.

Operating systems have reached a mature level for features. There's not much left to add feature-wise other than tweaking existing features, which always annoys users. Unless there's a new revolutionary feature then the OS is just gonna continue to evolve things there already and consume more space.

I expect 10.13 will cheer lead with the news file system. Sounds cool to developers but not so much to a high end Mac Pro owning grandma.

- Resume playback in iTunes, which was available in SoundJam MP 2.5.3 from which Apple iTunes was developed in 2001 (16 years ago!).
- Full Finder color labels.
- Arrows in scroll bars.
- Working Apple Mail import tool from Eudora Mail for Mac supporting non-ASCII characters.
- Integration of Contacts (Address Book), Notes and Calendar in a single application.
- Allow to customize and remember "File - Find" (Command F) settings, instead of the mostly useless "Kind is Any" default.
- Implement rich-search options as HoudahSpot (requiring indexing) and EasyFind (not requiring indexing). The latter is essential to search non-indexed disks.
