Have had my 2011 iMac sitting gathering dust as High Sierra simply bricked it and not one restore option works... Including time machine.

Time for some serious thought on my next purchase - the High Sierra debacle has left me angry and annoyed. And a decent iMac st Canadian prices would top near $3,000 - no thanks.
Use your iMac for windows and it’s as capable as it ever was. Dropping supporting for something with a i7-2600K and a HD6970 is just ******** it’s still faster than any of their rubbish laptop in 2018.

Or replace it with a Mac Mini 2014 which will be full upgradable to Mojave :p

Such a huge bargain to pay 1k to buy a desktop with 4 generations back dual core laptop component with integrated graphics and non upgradable ddr3 ram.

Well this really sucks. My 2011 27” iMac gets no more love from Apple. Will have to decide if I really need to get a new one

If you're really gonna spend $1K, one could probably pick up a base model Late 2013 Mac Pro/trashcan. Yes, plenty of old bones in there, but at least it has some real horsepower and should be supported for 4+ more years.

Put windows on it and see if you really need another Mac machine.

Lol, if you’re gonna spend 1k, get a Mac Pro 5,1 upgrade to X5690s and a REAL graphics card.

Not quite the plug-and-play strategy that most Mac mini buyers/upgraders would be looking for.
Well then those tech illiterates are too dumb to realise they’re being sold overpriced outdated “tech” and deserve to have their wallets raped by Tim.

Damn, with those specs just install windows/Linux and call it a day. It’s ridiculous how a still powerful machine like that is force obsoleted.

Can't even tell if you're being serious with this crazy-talk.

I sold my 2011 Mac mini to a 69-year-old family friend who savvy enough to teach software classes, but has zero desire to rip/replace a CPU on a 10 year old desktop.

not bad for beta 1 , I even got partial web drivers support, a little glitch in the time when I took the screenshot but no big deal, in my opinion this has been the most stable beta 1 ever

there is a way to modify a file in Mac OS installer to be able to install Mac OS on an unsupported Mac , that is if apple don't add support to your model in the next betas, it is known about the 5 year obsolete rule that apple uses, I know is not fair because a 2011 system still good enough today, so just wait and see, let's just hope that apple add support to your machine if not you always have option b, option c is to buy a new system not cool at all, anyway good luck

Ok I was being bit too dramatic
But upgrading a tower Mac Pro (the only Mac Pro id recognise as a real Mac Pro) is as easy as upgrading as any windows pc, and the core 2 duo Xeons are super cheap for the performance.

But you’re still missing my point... only a small percentage of Mac buyers have any desire to do even the most simple of hardware upgrades. Which is why the Mac mini has such a diverse customer base.

I guess. But also some of them are forced to buy the non repairable non upgradable macs because Apple hasn’t offered a decent desktop in a decade. Remember the outcry when they took away the upgradable ram and SSD from the 2014 mini?

Yes, I remember. And I still bought a 2014 Mac mini, anyway. And it’s been rock solid for 3+ years. It’s actually the graphics performance that dates this unit the worst (poor 4K support), so even if I could upgrade the RAM/SSD, it wouldn’t make much difference in my daily use.

The 2014 mini was a blatant robbery, removing 2 cores AND increased the price, glued up the case soddered on everything, are you ****ing kidding me? No dGPU, no way of upgrading anything not even external GPU thanks to no TB3, extremely underpowered as you said can’t even run high resolution displays properly, the damn thing is nearly disposable for anything other than web browsing which can be done on a $200 chromebook. And that comes with a screen.

Still rock-solid office apps, and running multiple services/media servers, light video and audio editing. Yes, the problem is lack of 4K support. But unless we're talking about the cMP, or recent TB3 models, you would never be able to upgrade the video performance. So there is no Goldilocks Mac mini after all....

Not everyone who buys computers wants or expects to upgrade machines, and none of the major hardware vendors are heading in that direction, anyways. Why would you expect Apple to be any different?

Ah well... My 2011 MBP is officially old now and this makes me reconsider buying a Windows machine to replace it instead of a new Mac... If that's not planned obsolescence I don't know what it is. Longevity is one of the big advantages of owning a Mac but sadly it seems that they'd rather have a dark mode and a bunch of users forced to upgrade -> $$$.

remember when every os update was a purchase? at least things aren't all that bad anymore

but you forget it was their 'fastest mini ever' when they released it ;)

Will this qualify?

Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3072 MB

Well, you COULD upgrade some of the iMac GPUs, if you have enough courage. And a LOT of people do want to at least upgrade/replace their hard drives and ram, just look at all those posts about dead ssds and stuff, and upgrading ssd and ram can extend an old machines life by a lot (at least if Apple didn’t “deem” the obviously completely obsolete Sandy bridge and HD6000 series inadequate for 10.14:rolleyes:). Not to mention all those dead iMac and MBP gpus because Apple has the courage to not use proper cooling. And what other vendor are heading to the everything-glued-together direction in the DESKTOP space? A HP Z series workstation can come with any gpu from Radeon Pro wx9100 to quadro P6000 to GP100 and you can put in your own cards. Absolutely nothing is soldered on.

Yes, since it’s essentially the D700 in the Trash can.

My early 2011 laptop with an SSD is still wonderful. This makes me very sad.

I have the early 2011 MBP equipped with SSD as well— feels just as fast as my new 2016 MBP, and in some cases it actusally loads apps faster! Thankfully, High Sierra will still be a great OS for years to come with the continuation security updates.

How many years of security updates do OS X get after discontinued? I know windows 7 will get security patches until 2020- 5 years after end of mainstream support

What you fail to notice from just reading the specs is that, for example, AMD never released a official Windows 10 driver for their pre-GCN graphics. This means that they were obsoleted in 2015. This is the exact same situation as Apple: a Sandy Bridge iMac can't run Windows 10, something that happened 3 years earlier.

Windows support is contingent on hardware vendor support, which often bails earlier than Apple does.

That's rubbish, you can run Windows 10 on Macs that are 10 years old without issue. Runs a screaming speed too. According to Apple, o8 machine can't run anything past 7. Which is just a blatant lie.

silicon also dies, buying so old machine is a risky business...
You can replace/upgrade the CPUs in the trash can just fine. The GPUs, on the other hand.....because courage. And the D300s D500s and D700s are known to fail.

The 2600K and HD6970 in the 2011 iMac is still way faster than any overpriced undercooled MacBook in 2018. Forced obsolescence because of Tim Crook’s stupid, slow, low-level, barely-supported-by-any-third-party-developer proprietary Metal API.
