I don't expect my machine to receive updates forever, but this hardware is far from ancient. that's just like saying go buy a new car every seven years cause it can't run on this gasoline if that were the case.o_O

I am truly looking forward to the so called Internet-of-Things.
Go out and by a new house, because your old one does not get any updates anymore?

The computer industry really needs to get in line with ordinary product life cycles. Especially now, as Moores Law is coming to an end and older hardware is still quite capable...

Are USB-C ports not a standard port? Because it's 2018 and most devices are switching to that. And optical drives? Really? It sounds like a 2010 machine might even be too modern for you since you're living in 2007.
Oh, you're a charmer. :p

And I also drive a 2004 Honda Accord, in case you're interested. I suppose that makes me an old fogie (though I grew up in the 90's) but sexy as modern tech might be, it taketh away as much as it giveth, and I don't like a computer without versatile I/O components any more than I like a car that thinks for me. I'll do my own thinking, thankyouverymuch. ;)

MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)

Ah, looks like this may be the last release for my MacBook Air. I get that it is 6 years old now, but still hard to believe it is approaching EOL. It has been a bullet-proof system for me.

2011 iMacs are a very nice balance in terms of performance & upgradeability. kind of a unique stuff when apple had free space to install additional 2.5" ssd. also the last iMac that used the totally cool magnetic front screen mounts.

It would be even better, if they would offer a GPU-replacement for these. It's i7 CPU benchmarks are still nothing to complain about. However, in two years time it will be a worthless paperweight because it will be unsafe to use for anything practical...

I just need a left fan for 2011 17” MBPro (it buzzes) and a new (used) display and I’m set for a couple of years. My current display flickers brightness sometimes.

That's my point Moores Law, Mojave can run fine on this hardware as it's just high Sierra with dark mode and finder updates, nothing graphically intensive prevents this update, but the hardcore Apple guys in here keep shouting ancient and go give apple more money Now!

I don't expect updates for a lifetime but cutting GPU OS support for 7 year old hardware is weird.

I'm not even sure how my 2012 MBP is classed. It's the first generation rMBP...is that a mid-2012 or early 2012??

If you are currently running a newer version of macOS (Yosemite or newer I believe), if you go to 'About this Mac', it should tell you exactly what model you have (early, mid, late, etc...).

Really? That’s common with tech products and consumer goods is it?

Man, how often do you buy a new fridge? Or a toilet? Or a door for your garage? Some things have life-spans measured in tens of years.

It is fine for enthusiasts to strife for the latest and greatest. It is another thing to declare something 'obsolete' as a business decision.
It feels a bit like the dubious window-pane repair shop, going round after dark, smashing windows to increase business...

Well, my 2010 iMac has had a good run. Still works great, still will. I just think about what is different: when I bought it, I had no wife and no family. Now I have a wife, two kids, and live somewhere else with a new job. It has been quite a while...

I am with you here, but let's not limit our thinking: What exactly is hindering Apple to provide lifetime security support for their premium products? I would even be willing to pay for it.

Speaking of Mojave, remember Windows Mojave? :D

Appears they’ve used the GPU to disqualify older models again.

The amazing benefits of integrated components that can’t be swapped.

Well, most consumer laptops don't have the ability to upgrade components, and that's mostly what Apple and Windows OEMs sell. The older iMacs actually can be upgraded, but it isn't very simple. Fact is, though, most people aren't buying upgradable towers anymore. My large company doesn't even do it.

What is good metal supported GPU for MacPro 5,1?

I had a Radeon HD 7870 that had pretty good Metal support. I think anything relatively modern is going to be better than the original cards that shipped with the cMP.

Windows 10 requirements:

These look like the specs of an average 2004 computer.
I suggest you try to run any version of Windows since Vista on such a machine. I bet Windows 10 is equally disappointing, if not more so, than Mojave on any of the Macs that just got cut. Apple and MS can't design modern software around single core PCs running DX9 graphics.

Ah well... My 2011 MBP is officially old now and this makes me reconsider buying a Windows machine to replace it instead of a new Mac... If that's not planned obsolescence I don't know what it is. Longevity is one of the big advantages of owning a Mac but sadly it seems that they'd rather have a dark mode and a bunch of users forced to upgrade -> $$$.

And you really need the latest functions in ordet to use you laptop? While I've managed to keep up with hardware thanks to my business my dad use a 2009 macbook without a problem, heck even my wife still use her 2007 Mac mini...I guess it's up to your needs and to some point I can understand that you might me angry with apple. Sure they are missing out on new features but switching to a new os seams stupid to me.

I recently installed Windows 10 on a $300 notebook from 10 years after replacing the HDD for an SSD and it ran surprisingly well.

I didn't try Mojave but HS runs very smoothly on my 2011 MBP with an SSD, even with its dead GPU. I can't understand how the few changes they announced would make it unusable. Hopefully reducing the number of supported Macs mean the experience will be even better on the rest.

Just like your car, your computer will continue to work. But just like a car, the manufacturer may stop making new parts for it. Your '86 Honda Civic still runs, but don't expect the dealership to still carry a front fender for it.
