I am trying to update Catalina on my late 2009 Mac mini from 10.15 to 10.15.2 using Patcher 1.30. The problem I am having is that the boot medium created does not complete booting. I get the no entry sign.

Running in verbose mode, the script stops very early on at "IOUSB matching". I have tried with a USB flash drive and with an SSD hooked up to a GoFlex FW800 adapter as the update medium. Both halt at the same spot. There are no firmware updates for my Mini.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply. So did you just follow the tutorial video to perform the update? I've watched it and it seems like he's formatting the existing HD to APFS, which i would assume wipes out all the data. Is there an alternative set of instructions available?

I was booted to Mojave from a different drive, used the patcher tool to download Catalina, then let it do an in-place install and selected the drive (A different Mojave SSD (CCC Cloned backup)).

It converted the Mojave APFS file structure layout to the Catalina file structure scheme, and simply upgraded the macOS from Mojave to Catalina. I lost no data or apps in the process.

I didn't watch the video you're referring to, and I surmise it's probably dealing with a USB thumb drive and installing to a fresh drive that needs to be initialized. That's a great way to go, but I've found it faster and easier for ME, to just do an in-place install that results in an upgrade, and it's quicker than dealing with USB media. This works great for me, it may not be for everyone however.

You need to try things out, and find what works best for you.

Catalina 10.15.2 on cMP 5,1 audio?

Quick question as I was unable to find an answer by searching the forums. Does the internal audio of a cMP 5,1 with DosDude1 Patcher 1.3 on Catalina 10.15.2 work?

On my system the audio devices do not show up. DP Audio via the AMD RX 580 is working fine to the display.

Thanks much and Happy New Year!

Try booting back in the Catalina Patcher and reapply the legacy audio patch only and see if that works :)

The audio on my MP51 is no different under Catalina (using @dosdude1 patcher) than it is under any other version of macOS. It works fine here.

There is no need to do that in a MP51. The Audio is supported properly out of the box.

Carefully read page ONE of this thread:

Solved my problem after adding some extensions to my iMac using an Nvidia card...your Macbook seems to use a relative of my card. This is just a shot after reading through my six sleep kernel panics logs.

Problem solved.

Somehow when I transfered the Catalina installation from the SATA to an NVMe SSD it became "corrupt" in some strange way. Neither the source volume nor the destination volume showed the internal audio hardware.
I installed Catalina again onto a separate partition using DosDude1 Installer and the audio hardware was shown again. I then re-installed over the top of the existing installation on the NVMe and everything is working again now.
I have no idea what broke during the transfer. I booted from the Catalina stick and used the disk utility to transfer the installation from the SATA to the NVMe volume.

Thanks again. So which process did you use to perform the upgrade? Did you just use the same steps as previous versions (such as Mojave)?

Like this?

Since sidecar doesn’t work for me on either my MacBook Pro 2010 or my Hackintosh I tried duet. On my MacBook Pro it only works as a mirror. Any ideas? I noticed on my tower it asked for permission to record contents of my screen and the MacBook did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated

In my previous post #7587, my frustration at being unable to install correctly Catalina 10.15 on my Mac Pro 5.1 almost led to giving up and returning to Mojave. However, at last I've succeeded in getting Cat 10.15.2 to operate smoothly on the 5.1, although there were a few subtleties in the process which took some work to discover.

Although dosdude's marvellous patcher states that it will only work with the correct Boot ROM installed, that turned out to be quite involved, mine being version MP.51.007F.B03. I followed dosdude's recommendation to run OfficialAPSFWUpdate.zip to update the Boot.ROM, but always unsuccessfully, with repeated “Broken Pipe” errors. It turned out that I had to reinstall High Sierra 10.13.6, and even during this process I kept getting errors like “.. this computer is too old to install this OS”. I finally succeeded by following the instructions on http://setapp.com/how-to/download-and-install-old-mac-os-versions to install macOS 10.13.6 and with it Boot.ROM MP51.0089.800. Although Boot.ROM 144.0.0.0.0 was my final objective, I decided to call it quits with the former, and then went back to the Catalina v 1.3.0 patcher. After some trial and error, I worked through dosdude's patch procedure to get a nearly (*) fully functional Catalina 10.15.2.

First, here is my fairly basic system specification:

. Apple Mac Pro 4.1 (Early 2009) upgraded to Mac Pro 5.1

. 3.33GHZ 6-core Intel Xeon processor

. 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM

. NVIDIA GeForce GT120 512 MB Graphics

. Apple 27 in Cinema Display via mini display port

. Boot ROM MP51.0089.800 (previously MP.51.007F.B03)

. Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1 (0x4)

. Broadcom BCM4322 WiFi

. 1 TB, 120 GB SSD's in Bays 1 and 2 respectively

. 500 GB HDD's in Bays 3 and 4

In other words a fairly vanilla Mac Pro!

(*) Sidecar, Handoff and Continuity not yet available - awaiting installation of a BCM94360CD combo wifi and BT 4.0 card.

With the updated MP.51.0089.800 Boot ROM installed, dosdude's Catalina Patcher worked perfectly. (I even used the USB boot drive later to upgrade my MBP 8.2 from 10.15 to 10.15.2).

However, after installation, the Mac Pro could not be put to sleep manually, Hot Corners didn't work, the Cinema Display was not correctly identified in About This Mac or in System Preferences, and there was no display Brightness control. So I rebooted from the USB Bootable Drive, opened Post Install Patches, and selected the “Legacy Video Patch”.

On the next reboot from the 1 TB SSD, all the above problems had disappeared. And unlike dosdude's patched Mojave previously installed on my MP, it now boots straight to a black Apple logo on a white background, and the rolling startup script in its “box” no longer appears. Also, to get rid of the dark background in the top menu bar and Finder column, I opened System Preferences > Accessibility > Display and checked the “reduce transparency” box.

Same machine. I returned to Mojave some months ago. Don’t like Catalina at all.

Hey boys. Happy New Year!

I have problem, which is not related to this thread, but maybe someone experienced this as well. I had beautifull morning with my MBP Late 2011 15 inch (with dead dGPU), when i end my job, i close the lid, and after a while when i wanted to work again, my MBP went to black screen. No backlight, no working keyboard, nothing exept fully working fans. I rebooted it several times, i've trying to reset SMC, Command+R etc. I've change thermal paste, clean motherboard, tried to boot with no battery, nothing works. When i press power button, i have working fans and little led in front of mbp.

So, if this is a hardware problem, how i can this be diagnosted? How to know where is the problem on motherboard? Thank you.

upd: i';ve tried three diffrent SSD's, nothing helps.

Have you tried ASD?

Have you tried ASD? But I´m afraid it sounds like a motherboard failure.

I think you don't have to "go back" to an old macOS.

You can use an SSD with different partitions and multiple macOS.
So you can always choose which macOS I want to work with now.
so I still do it and also use Mojave 10.14.6 and now and then the newest Catalina 10.15.3 DP1.
But I wouldn't go completely away from Catalina and if you only use it for "research purposes".
