Perhaps here, but length of membership here shouldn't be seen as "newbie" with regard to familiarity with forums in general. I had held membership in dozens of forums, as well as serving as moderator for several, prior to joining MR.

And it makes it easy to spot questionable first posts. :)
Ah, I can certainly see how that information would be beneficial to others. Perhaps my attitude toward the display of membership information could benefit from some revision.

I also don't mind having join date show up in posts (or whatever) ... though it does age me a touch. ;)

That being said I do have another

While in 'Your Account>Watched Threads' can we have an option to 'unwatch' the thread in that list? Right now the only way I've found to unwatch a thread is to go to it and click unwatch near the top left of the thread. I could be missing something but I'm usually quite quick about these things. ...usually

<edit> Oh wait I had to click on "Show all threads" then got a checkbox! It might be neat to add this when not viewing all threads.

Top right. Remember "milk hand... cookie hand"? :)

I agree length of time as a MRs forum member has nothing to with how much you know about Macs or even how the forum works! :)

I think we'll bring it back. the version I'm on has it, and I like it. I removed post count since we didn't have it before anyway. We did other things to reduce the sprawl, and I think it adds some personality to peoples profiles

Just "wondering out loud", so to say: is location all that useful? I mean if a lot of people actually fill out their real location it probably would be something useful/interesting, but if many don't fill it out or just put whatever they want there, then at most it becomes another place to put something like a signature and not much more. And that's certainly fine of course, but as far as it taking up extra space next to every post, I don't know if it's worthwhile (again, unless perhaps the majority have it filled out with their real locations).

I like to see the locations. Even if it's not actual, I think it adds a bit of character to a members profile.

Location can be helpful because it can give insight to cultural, regional, and language differences that can shape the dialogue. Hopefully it would just not show up and not occupy any space if users choose not to disclose it.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to enable all of the member information under user avatars and then give users the option to toggle displaying this information via their user settings. I feel this would be the best way to make everyone happy.

Right, assuming it's the actual location. For quite a few of those that have it filled out it's often some made up or perhaps funny thing, almost like another place for a short personal message (similar to a signature), in which case it can be interesting or funny but not all that useful as far as being next to every post.

Yes, something like that would be great.

Being that length of membership is not indicative of post count, knowledge of Apple products or familiarity with XenForo, I don't quite understand how a length of membership statement is beneficial.
Actually, it can be somewhat indicative. If someone is new to the forum or has few posts, it may clue the reader to more carefully scrutinize the content of their posts, as their knowledge and experience is unknown. On the other hand, if someone has been around the forum for a long time and has a significant number of posts, it stands to reason that they're less likely to post inaccurate information.

The reason for that is the longer someone is very active in the forum, it's likely that even if they didn't start with much knowledge, they have likely learned a lot from their involvement in the forum. Also, if they've posted false information in the past, it was likely corrected by other posters, further contributing to the poster's knowledge. The bottom line is that it's generally safer to trust posts made by more active posters who have been around a while than to trust posts by those who just arrived or haven't posted enough to give any clues about their knowledge or experience.

I like that I can simply click on a poster's name or avatar to see that information, without having to go to another page. That way, it's hidden for those who don't want to see it and available for those who do with a simple click.

My preference would be to leave it as it is, but to make the popup profile info appear on mouseover. No clicking, just hover your mouse cursor over the avatar and see the info. Move the mouse pointer off the avatar and POOF! it's gone from view.

Yeah, that would be a good way of going about it as well (or even on a mouse click, but basically similarly display a small pop-up rather than going to a different page).

Fwiw, mouseovers work poorly to not at all on many touch devices.
It could be mouseover on a desktop type of browser, and a simple tap to get a similar pop-up on a mobile device (as it is set up already from what I recall).

The current setup works ok on iOS with a tap to bring up the info. On Windows though it has to load on an entirely new page. Not sure what the behavior is on Android. Even on iOS I sometimes get brought to another page with the tap.
