Sorry about the overzealous emails. I switched everyone's preference to "watch_no_email" if you weren't getting email notifications on our vbulletin system.

is the supersize a temporary issue or is this the new look?
everything occupies so much space.
PM in particular are terrible (i assume 'conversation is the same as PMs? are they still private?). before uyou could see a bunch of them and it was easy to organize them. now you have to scroll forever.

Conversations are better on the new system once you use them. The old pms don't import well in the new system.

New ones will be threaded.

Can we get an Apple logo back in the emoticon choices? Super helpful when discussing the Apple Watch.

Also sorely missing the "search thread" option.
You can still search a specific thread. Simply click the magnifying glass at the top twice, and you should get this.

Wow, quite a drastic change!! Did a double take cause I thought I had gone to the wrong site! Will definitely take a little getting used to but it certainly looks modern, clean and fresh... Well done!

EDIT: I'm based in Johannesburg, South Africa and despite our notoriously poor ADSL the pages and site are rendering super quick! Huge improvement!!

thanks.
i suppose it will take time to get used to them.
but the spacing remains terrible. can it be made more compact?

also, purely cosmetic, but my avatar (apart for the round mask which i don't particularly like) became a giant black dot. we can't use animated gifs anymore?

I am LOVING the new forums! They look so modern and different!

EDIT: One problem so far...upon looking at my profile, I found that my avatar (previously as big as it would go) was far too small. I had to change it afterwards...

Really love the new look! Very modern and new. Not so sure about the green bars between each post, they could be grey instead? - more Apple-esque

Love how my new profile picture fits effortlessly into the box!

Just another observation on new real estate expansion. I've been on the iPad all evening since the change and just handed off a thread to the Mac. Seems to only show about three posts, and those were either single line, or single quoted and single posted. Zoom in 10.10 Safari set to normal. This is on a 15" rMBP.

Oooh...round avatars. Must admit I quite like the new layout and design for threads, however the design of the forums overview isn't really floating my boat. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Nice job on the upgrade!

likes says zero? hoping that updates.

looks good, really good. but i feel less special with an avatar now

I dont like the fact that i have to hover over a forum thread in the tread list to see the last couple of pages, makes it even harder to get a quick overview over a thread, if it has only 1 page of posts in the thread or maybe a couple of hundred pages. Feels like there is no reason to hide them either since there is more than enough space to show it, kinda feels like someone just found out about CSS show/hide techniques and MUST use them somewhere even though it doesnt make it any better UI. I prefer going to the last page instead of the last unread but kinda annoying now when the page controls isnt showing.

Here i have moused over the "Post your last purchase...." thread.

As I'm using the new forum more, I agree with this. Yes, you can still glance over and see the total number of posts in a thread under "Replies" but there doesn't seem to be any reason to hide the page numbers as doing so treats every thread - whether with zero replies or 5,000 - exactly the same. Showing the number of pages is a good way to get a quick visual clue as to the popularity of a thread as you scan a list of threads.

On another topic, there is, what I suspect is a 'feature' that I'd consider more a flaw in this software, as I've run into it on other sites using this software. In the 'new posts' view, if you read a thread, it no longer shows up in the New Posts list when you go back to browse it. On the one hand, this makes sense, on the other, if I decide after some consideration, that I'd like to go back and post something in that thread, or just re-read something, I can't just go pick it out of that view from chronological order - I have to go searching for it in order to find it. IMO, it should remain in the list in the time order of the last post made, whether I have read it or not.

Finally, please keep tweaking the visual style. All the white space still looks to me not modern, but unfinished. There are now good delineators on the top and left-hand side of posts, but the bottom and right sides just fade into the white margins of the screen. Some subtle background color would be appreciated here. Also, as mentioned many times, there is an excess of real-estate devoted to the avatar and member info. Look at the top of say, page 12 of this thread. I get a total of two posts on my screen with all of two short lines of actual content. One of the biggest traffic drivers on Macrumors is new product announcement threads where there are thousands of posts containing one word or a short sentence at best. We now get to scroll through them 2 posts per page at a time.

Just noticed that avatars seem to be shown in much lower res when viewing the forums on my iPad. Not sure what that's about.

out of curiosity i have two questions:
  1. why does the user tab show on the home screen. aka i have to click forums first
  2. when i mouseover the user tab in the forums my avatar in the left is square? makes not sense.

thanks for the good work

(Emphasis mine.) I had that thought earlier too. Even though we end up scrolling past those anyway, it's going to be tedious if a single page turns into 20 or more. I recognize there would be more ads loaded, however the attention span of readers is getting shorter and shorter. Isn't it better to keep someone engaged? Loading new pages, however brief, still interrupts the reader IMO. Just my 2¢ (or less) worth.

Edit: seems like this is a bug in the editor. In mobile Safari (iPad), I can no longer use the built-in dictionary. Even though I can select "define", it comes up with "No Definition Found". Also, (probably related), if I choose to "Search the web...", Google comes up with an error:

400.
That’s an error.

Congrats @arn and team on the new design, really Lean-And-Mean! ;)

GREAT new design, look-and-feel. Even on the iPhone6+ & iPad3 it looks very clean and very readable. Will play around with it, to check it out further.

Everybody happy surfing on the new MacRumors,

CHEERS!

If you any more please send a report and we will clean up the offending language.

The language is not offending to me, sorry. It is how it is used that can offend. I just remember that the old forum software did censor many, many words used in daily conversations, and I was surprised to see them uncensored here. Maybe that is what growing up is like.

The Profanity Filter should be back soon.
