I dont like the fact that i have to hover over a forum thread in the tread list to see the last couple of pages, makes it even harder to get a quick overview over a thread, if it has only 1 page of posts in the thread or maybe a couple of hundred pages. Feels like there is no reason to hide them either since there is more than enough space to show it, kinda feels like someone just found out about CSS show/hide techniques and MUST use them somewhere even though it doesnt make it any better UI. I prefer going to the last page instead of the last unread but kinda annoying now when the page controls isnt showing.
Here i have moused over the "Post your last purchase...." thread.
As I'm using the new forum more, I agree with this. Yes, you can still glance over and see the total number of posts in a thread under "Replies" but there doesn't seem to be any reason to hide the page numbers as doing so treats every thread - whether with zero replies or 5,000 - exactly the same. Showing the number of pages is a good way to get a quick visual clue as to the popularity of a thread as you scan a list of threads.
On another topic, there is, what I suspect is a 'feature' that I'd consider more a flaw in this software, as I've run into it on other sites using this software. In the 'new posts' view, if you read a thread, it no longer shows up in the New Posts list when you go back to browse it. On the one hand, this makes sense, on the other, if I decide after some consideration, that I'd like to go back and post something in that thread, or just re-read something, I can't just go pick it out of that view from chronological order - I have to go searching for it in order to find it. IMO, it should remain in the list in the time order of the last post made, whether I have read it or not.
Finally, please keep tweaking the visual style. All the white space still looks to me not modern, but unfinished. There are now good delineators on the top and left-hand side of posts, but the bottom and right sides just fade into the white margins of the screen. Some subtle background color would be appreciated here. Also, as mentioned many times, there is an excess of real-estate devoted to the avatar and member info. Look at the top of say, page 12 of this thread. I get a total of two posts on my screen with all of two short lines of actual content. One of the biggest traffic drivers on Macrumors is new product announcement threads where there are thousands of posts containing one word or a short sentence at best. We now get to scroll through them 2 posts per page at a time.
