what makes you so sure running with the ipod slows you down.

D

well for a race where you are trying to run as fast as you can. not only do the headphones get in your way.....but you might try to adjust the volume or change the song.....don't get me wrong, i love running with my ipod....but you can't run really fast with it.....and if you can, you could be running that much faster....

I have to agree, I can't use my iPod when I'm racing.. I don't know why, just doesn't feel as good. It's not like you need the motivation when you're in a race with lots of other people and supporters. I did a 5k in 18.48 the other day with my iPod - but it was round a 400m grass track, and boy oh boy does that get boring. I'll set a fastest 5k challenge up tonight. :)

yeah, you don't need something to get in your way and stuff....

18.48 with an ipod is pretty good.....my best is 19.09 on a regular run

sounds good.....sign me up....twood is my nike+ id, or tim.powerbook@gmail.com

Ok Mr. Anderson and twoodcc, you're invited.. fastest 5k before the end of February. :) Anyone else who would like to be included (come on, we need some more), PM me. My Nike+ stuff isn't working.. I need to sort it in London on Sunday. Then I'll try and register a run. I have a 5.5k race this weekend, very very muddy, very hilly, and the results should be on the internet a couple of days later.

I am willing to participate, however it wont be a competition but I would not mind trying a 5k.

Today I jogged 5k in 32 min 10 seconds or so. Then I walked 2.5k after that then jogged another 1.5k or so and then walked the last 1.21k for a total of 10.21k in 1 hour 24 min and 30 seconds.

Whoever said I need new shoes, they were right. The first 3k that I jogged were ok, the last 2k I jogged were quite difficult.

EDIT: WOOT I am in first, according to the site I ran 5k in 31 min 47 seconds, hehe

Cheers, I think I'll need it. :p

your welcome :) i know the feeling ;)

congrats! now just work on lowering that time :)

whats an ok time?

Ah, you see, that's a relative question. How much have you run? I used to run more in my 20s than I have in a long time and I've started to get back into it again with the Nike+ stuff. I ran in a 5k race last weekend and I'm going to run again in one this weekend. If I'm lucky I'll be able to run in a couple more before I head home to Indiana. My goal this year is to manage a run under 20'. Last weekend I ran a 23' 33" and tonight I managed to run a 23' 25" :p We'll see how I do on Saturday.

So my point is those are ok times for me. You've started out and you'll find that as you run more your times will continue to drop. What you might want to do is run 4 or 5 miles a several times a week at a slower pace and then run a 5k as fast as you can. So that pace you posted might be fine for you right now. As you run more you'll figure it out.

I'm sure some of the other more dedicated runners will have some more advice. But don't take the difference between the members here as a bad thing. Stick to it and push yourself a little and you'll be happy with the results.

Good luck,

D

Am I slow or REALLY slow?

whats an ok time?

don't get caught up in times. what Mr. Anderson said is good advice. now that you have a time, just focusing on improving it....even if it's only a second or two.....and after you've run more....it will continue to drop and you'll get in better shape......which is more important than any time ......

hope that helped :)

I did another 5k today, although I was roughly 2 min slower.

Way to go. Better to be 2 minutes slower then not run at all.

I did a 5k tonight as well. I went a bit harder then normal, but it didn't make a big difference on my time. Now I just hope my legs work for the full 90 minutes at hockey this evening.

Weighed in today. Lost 6 pounds since last Saturday. I've been running better and controlling my portions. 1 more pound and I am under 200 baby.

btw 206 is my max weight in my lifetime.

Friday Night Puck went surprisingly well. I was very hydrated though, that was the difference between this week, and last week.

Ran another pb in the 5k this afternoon. PS, who is Paula Radcliffe?

Paula Radcliffe is the holder of the fastest woman's marathon. :)

I slipped in my XC race, right leg just slid out wide from me as I went round a corner.. I felt it go. Paramedic said it was just a pulled muscle, probably the quad.. but its a bitch, I really needed to do well in that race. It's really pissed me off.

Around the 4.5k mark last night, my right foot fell asleep.
Anybody know what causes that? My shoe was not too tight.
I stopped and loosened it even more. I was really moving along until that happened. I had to run the last half km with a numb foot.
I've heard maybe it's caused by running with cold muscles. not sure though.
Any advice?

Thanks
