Maybe Apple has learned a thing or two about battery life with their wireless peripherals; it's another thing they can steal from Microsoft, making a wireless keyboard and mouse that can last months on a battery. I have a Microsoft Sculpt keyboard I have been using solid every weekday for 6 months on the same 2 AAA's it shipped with, but at home my Apple wireless keyboard and trackpad are perpetually dead and I barely touch them.

I don't need my OS constantly monitoring my mouse or keyboard are available or running out of power, I just want them to work when I need them to work and not draining power when I leave them alone.

And in other news, used Apple wired USB mini keyboards continue to sell for well above original retail on eBay and other outlets.

But Apple refuses to produce those as an option.
Yes, Apple could make a killing by charging what eBay and other outlets charge for the wired USB keyboard. And as you say, there is a market of people willing to pay those prices.

I am guessing there will not be a black, backlit, wired extended keyboard, but I would so buy one.
(In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they axe the extended keyboard altogether.)

Back in March I spilled a cup of tea on my wireless Bluetooth keyboard lol. My hackintosh has since settled for an old Microsoft ergo keyboard I had laying around. Patience is a virtue, bring on the backlight ;)

USB-C or Lighting-USB so you are able to charge them and/or use wired.

would love the TouchId on either of or both of the mouse and keyboard to authenticate ApplePay payments for online purchases. also would like a keyboard with black keys and backlight. hoping they also upgraded to the latest bluetooth low power standard for much longer use between charges especially for the mouse. hope the batteries are sealed internal as well.

I never liked wireless peripherals on a desktop. I don't really mind the cables. Keyboards to me need to be 100% reliable, I can't be bothered with a keyboard that maybe works if I get bluetooth working and if it supports the keyboard (the problem only becomes apparent when you are using Linux or similar). Plus, charging yet another device or even changing batteries is just annoying as hell.

Force Touch and Touch ID are unlikely because both would need Bluetooth to transfer information. The latter is likely out of the question over Bluetooth. When/if the a Mac gets Touch ID it will likely have to be on the Mac itself tied to some sort of "secure enclave". We'll see.
Bluetooth is made to transfer information. It can easily transfer the pressure information with the current position(s) on the trackpad, so really just three integers instead of two per frame. The security issue with Touch ID doesn't really seem unsolvable. The obvious idea is to just process the whole fingerprint information on a chip on the trackpad itself, so that the information about the fingerprint never actually leaves the device. But of course, security needs to be tight with this thing, even though I'm pretty much 100% sure that there won't be any Touch ID on the trackpad.

I ordered a BTO 27 a few days ago and it's still stuck in processing not expected to arrive until Oct 19. I bet there's a refresh for those too that they're holding up my order for :)

I wasn't expecting the refresh until early next year so that's why I went ahead and ordered.

I highly doubt it. They don't generally do that. They just ship what they have. If you're waiting for one computer, they don't upgrade you to the new model if it's released while waiting. Can say this from experience with a MacBook Pro I'd ordered in the past.

Since it's a BYO then you can't return it even if a new model comes out.

Yeah you can return it...they have the same return policy (free shipping, free returns) for 14 days.

I'll stick to a USB keyboard, because it offers 2 USB ports which are handy for USB sticks, as anyone with an iMac knows how annoying it is to reach around the back to insert USB sticks. I really can't see why they can't update the iMac stand to incorporate 2 USB ports. I would like to see black keys on the keyboard only because there's no white on any Mac, the laptops have black keys so the keyboard should too, only time white keys would be ok is those with a white face iPad. The mouse i'm only interested if they actually make it bigger so it is more comfortable to use, at present it is too low/small, and I hate the edges, and it would be nice if it was more curved as they obviously never looked at their palm to see how it is shaped. I also would like to see a USB version of the magic mouse, because it is heavy with batteries and I'm sick of charging them every 2-3 days, i threw mine in the draw and I use a cheap microsoft mouse.

My ideal Magic Mouse:
  • Force Touch/Taptic feedback
  • Integrated Touch ID
  • Integrated battery
  • Wireless charging
  • Latest BT with lower power requirements
  • Little bit more curved and ergonomic
  • Black color option
My ideal Apple Keyboard:
  • HBacklit capability
  • Somehow touch sensitive for swipe cursor moving gestures like on the iPad keyboard and 6s keyboard
  • Improved key press sensation
  • Integrated battery
  • Wireless charging
  • Latest BT with lower power requirements
  • Black color option
Hopefully we at least get a few of these!

glad i'm not the only one who would love this. would make word processing so much nicer :)
i'm also hoping for a carbon copy of the retina macbook keyboard, really weird going between the 2 at the minute...

I've only used that keyboard at the store but I hope they can make something better than that. I'm not a fan, although I could possibly get used to it. We don't need a super slim keyboard on the desktop. As it is I'm already thinking about getting a customized mechanical keyboard. Yeah, I know, that would make me one of "those" people. I do like the lower profile of the Apple Keyboard, so if they could use larger versions of the butterfly mechanism on the new MacBook keyboard so that it has greater travel and "clickiness" to it, then that would be fantastic. Basically I just want more travel and less mushiness in a beautiful, precision machined space gray/black aluminum enclosure.

Not really too bothered about a Magic Mouse 2 (as I only use my MM for audio, video, photo editing) but I would be very interested in a Magic Trackpad 2 that had 3D Touch :)
