Bluetooth is made to transfer information. It can easily transfer the pressure information with the current position(s) on the trackpad, so really just three integers instead of two per frame. The security issue with Touch ID doesn't really seem unsolvable. The obvious idea is to just process the whole fingerprint information on a chip on the trackpad itself, so that the information about the fingerprint never actually leaves the device. But of course, security needs to be tight with this thing, even though I'm pretty much 100% sure that there won't be any Touch ID on the trackpad.

Admittedly, I am not sure about what's possible, but just judging by how much the secure enclave was talked up when Touch ID first launched, I envision Touch ID on a Mac being a part of the Mac itself and not a Bluetooth accessory --- as much as it seems to logically make sense. Adding the security chip to the Magic Trackpad/Mouse itself may force it into a price point that doesn't seem worth it, but we'll see.

So much magic. So much wow.
I don't care for all of Apple's product names, but this one I absolutely detest. It's like tools they issue students at Hogwarts. Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, what's next, Magic Mike?

Well since they're getting into the transportation business maybe they'll make a "Magic School Bus"!

I actually don't understand the two different brandings. Even if they differ slightly, they could have been named equally.

Maybe they didn't want to associate force with the iPhone so people didn't over press/karate chop the screen? Maybe they just wanted something new for marketing?

I think two separate names is confusing, but maybe it's the idea behind them. Force click on Macs is just a new form of clickable trackpad with some fancy new features. 3D touch on the iPhone is a new dimension of integration?

You do all realise we always end up disappointed ! I bet it is exactly the same keyboard, mouse and trackpad but this time with Bluetooth 4...

You know what Apple are like recently...

My ideal Magic Mouse:
  • Force Touch/Taptic feedback
  • Integrated Touch ID
  • Integrated battery
  • Wireless charging
  • Latest BT with lower power requirements
  • Little bit more curved and ergonomic
  • Black color option
My ideal Apple Keyboard:
  • HBacklit capability
  • Somehow touch sensitive for swipe cursor moving gestures like on the iPad keyboard and 6s keyboard
  • Improved key press sensation
  • Integrated battery
  • Wireless charging
  • Latest BT with lower power requirements
  • Black color option
Hopefully we at least get a few of these!

You don't want your mouse to be sending wireless data of your fingerprint.
The Touch ID should be on the iMac unit itself. Maybe the front logo, or on
the power button. The Apple Mouse is the least ergonomic of all Apple products.
They should adopt Microsoft design:

Wireless keyboard: a black color option for the keyboard is very much needed. The white keys look
great on display but very hard to keep clean after a few weeks.

"We are going to magic the sh*t out of this..."

I'm not too fond of the idea of any of these having an internal rechargable battery. The whole device may be rendered useless when the battery fails.

I prefer being able to actually replace the batteries, and this progression into having devices with internal battery packs is infuriating.

Hopefully the battery packs will be replacable, though a propietary replacable battery pack isn't as desirable as being able to use easily replacable AAA or AA batteries, it is still less asinine than not having them replaceable at all.

Who said anything about sending fingerprint data anywhere? All they need is a secure enclave in the mouse to match against and then it sends a yes or no signal to the Mac to unlock. So to unlock your Mac you just grab the mouse. The movement triggers it to wake up and look for fingers to scan. That's how you do good design. Done.

Wasn't there a backlit keyboard leaked a while back? I'm guessing this new kb will be backlit and BT wireless at least (this is a welcome change for me since I sit in the dark a lot with my iMac)

Don't take this the wrong way, but sitting in the dark staring at a computer screen is about the worst thing you can possibly do to your eyes. And if you're young and invincible, you won't think anything of it, but please do anything you can to get some backlight in the room as you're eyes will thank you for every moment you do.

Watch the apple brand rechargeable batteries explode inside your apple keyboard and seal themselves inside for all time. It's magic.

I can't wait to see what the guy behind Better Touch Tool can do with 3D touch on a magic mouse.

I'm really looking forward to these. And I hope there is a next generation display to go along with them.

But.. But.. I just bought the Magic Trackpad.. *Finds box and receipt*

For my uses, I don't think the Magic Trackpad and Magic Trackpad 2 will be any different.

I don't click my trackpad to start with - I just use it on the left side of my keyboard for swipes and scrolling. I use my mouse on the right side to click and use mouse movement.

I just bought a 2nd Magic Trackpad at Radio Shack (yep, some are still around) for 50% off. (I have a home and work computer, I used to lug the trackpad around, now I just leave one at work, one at home)

We wait in hope .... backlight keyboard would be awesome....with extended number pad ... I can dream right?
just need more real estate for my hands to breath.
As for the iMac, must be a new redesign coming soon....maybe they will take this opportunity like the Macbook to introduce
new colours...and upgrade the 27 inch after that. Am more interested in what they do with the 27 inch ....been quite a while now at that size ...now 5K set in ...maybe chance to go bigger? Ahhh..but DAA graphics card....

The third OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 beta seeded to developers yesterday contains references to a Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2, as spotted by French website Consomac. Apple could ship the next-generation keyboard and mouse accessories alongside the new 4K 21.5-inch Retina iMac expected to launch next week, although the exact release date remains uncertain.

Apple's current-generation Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse

A new Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2, each featuring Bluetooth 4.2 and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, first appeared in FCC filings in August. Apple also registered several new web domains related to the term "Magic Keyboard" in September, including applemagickeyboard.com, applemagickeyboard.net, and applemagickeyboards.com.

Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 references in OS X 10.11.1

Apple currently sells an Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, each powered by two AA batteries, so these newly uncovered accessories are in all likelihood next-generation versions. The new Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 could have Force Touch, which is built into new MacBooks, while the inclusion of Touch ID is a more unlikely possibility.

No keys. You heard it here first.

Force Touch and Touch ID are unlikely because both would need Bluetooth to transfer information. The latter is likely out of the question over Bluetooth. When/if the a Mac gets Touch ID it will likely have to be on the Mac itself tied to some sort of "secure enclave". We'll see.

Well, technically when you type your password you send your password over the air. Not necessarily safer.

I'm not an expert but I assume that the Keyboard doesn't simply send plain types over the air and that there is some sort of encryption going on. (because anyone could see what you are typing at any moment.)

Why it wouldn't be possible over wifi/bluetooth?

From what I understant on the iPhone, all the "verification" is happening in the secure enclave and the phone just receive a "pass/fail" notice from the enclave.

All you would have to send over the air is that "pass/fail" notice (a simple encrypted code unique to each Mac/MouseKeyboard pairing)

But of course, i'm just saying, i'm not a specialist. I might be way wrong.

True on password over the air. I really don't know either way either, but I'm just thinking about biometric data and Apple Pay data going over Bluetooth. An equivalent of a "secure enclave" on the accessory makes sense but what does that do to the cost? Apple has scale with the iPhone that also costs over $600. So, my guess is that is the issue with just slapping a Touch ID scanner on a Magic Mouse or Trackpad and saying have at it. Hope I'm wrong.
