This isn't how refresh rate/pixel response times work. They're completely different things.

If the pixel response is slow, you can have image artefacts/smearing in certain situations, but your persistence of vision is still being reset from the high panel/backlight refresh rate.

The whole 'slow pixel response negates the high refresh rate' thing is bogus.
Okay, thanks for the info.

I don’t think it’s great to test the first beta and draw any conclusions from it. I know he addressed it at the end of the video, but it seems a little silly. Let’s wait and see once it’s out of beta.

It’s showing positive results so there’s no harm in doing so.

Okay, if there was no gain or the performance was worse it would too soon but I thought a few more fps is better than nothing.
I agree with you that it has added some fps. I can’t find it now but someone else tested it and got better results. I just thought this particular review was a bit indifferent to the feature.

GPTK mainly helps to convert the shaders. The "evaluation" part is nice, to see something running and to play Windows games, but it's not useful for the actual porting. I guess it has at least some use: if your ported game is slower the version run in GPTK it means you did something wrong.

So aside from The Medium, has anyone else mentioned GPTK helping them bring stuff over?

I also wonder if they were given an advanced version of 2.0 to flesh out the RT translation/support.

The Medium and Ubisoft is the only two I've heard of.

Can be played on Mac.

A question on graphics settings and MetalFX upscaling.

MetalFX upscaling allowed me to play through RE Village and Stray at an amazing level of performance on a M1 Air. Certainly always above 40fps. But, now on an M3 Pro, I can't decide between :
- low resolution/graphics without MetalFX (probably 1600 x 900)
- high resolution with.

In RE4 at 1080p on M3 Pro : during the first village "riot" without MetalFX, performance drops severely (probably ~30fps). Which made me wonder what's the best setting… MetalFX upscaling does make everything blurry, it's very noticeable when comparing with and without. But performance is amazing.

Anyway, I am curious… what are your preferences/suggestion? Does the blurryness of MetalFX put you off?

I'm not liking myself for saying this... I would go with the higher resolution and higher settings while engaging MetalFX.

To get good IQ you need a good starting resolution and good base framerate, even more so when you add in frame generation, which I presume will get announced for MetalFX at some point.

That's also what I settled for, right now. At least for RE4 which is so action oriented I'd rather have the good and stable frame rate MetalFX provides (while keeping all the graphics settings to high).

For me the most important thing is a sharp image. Otherwise it feels as if you have bad eye sight. So I rather lower the quality for more fps, not the resolution because on a 4K monitor I must have at least 1440p for image sharpness but rather 1800p if possible because it has the same sharpness as 2160p. It’s of course always a balance between different variables so sometimes you have to make compromises.

I feel like muddy textures is just as bad as low resolution.

I’m talking about reducing different visual effects like SSAO, shadows, Post-processing and other stuff like motion blur, depth of field. AA is also less important on higher resolutions. Texture quality is the last thing I touch.

That is fair. How much does that impact visual fidelity (I really dislike having to turn things down, but I think my 6900xt spoiled me and is now considered midrange 😭)?

Game Mode makes a difference.

To follow up on this, there was a more thorough test where someone actually measured fps. The results are interesting.
The first images show the fps measurement with no background apps running and Game Mode off and on.

The second shows a game running with multiple background apps running and Game Mode off and on.

Looks like more consistent frame rates with Game Mode on.

Are we sure game mode isn't using a more aggressive power plan to boost performance? Seems interesting that with no background processes game mode allowed increased power draw.

It lowered power draw in the second chart. There is a new private framework on macOS and iOS called the frame pacing framework. I’d wager it’s partly that. Too early to say yet. It’s just beta 1.

It depends on the game and your perception.
