Regarding the performance of the M3 Pro (16 inch), I was expecting better performance in gaming: 1080p with default settings on (SSAO, etc…) and no MetalFX upscaling does not provide a constantly fluid experience in RE4. I find that disappointing. Are my expectations too high of gaming in 1080p without upscaling on M3 Pro?

For newer "graphically complex" games? Yes.

Not exactly Mac related, but also as part of the recent betas.

New Features

  • On-demand resources limits were increased for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18 and visionOS 2. See On-demand resources size limits for more information. (122163236)

App bundle goes from 2 GB to 8 GB
Asset pack goes from 512 MB to 8 GB
Total size of asset packs on iOS/iPadOS goes from 20 GB to 70 GB
I wonder what the first game to break 20GB on iOS will be. AC:Shadows?

I'm really not sure.

I did some checking, and it's a bit hard to say. AC Mirage is 5 GB, Civ 6 is 4, at least for initial download sizes.
I've seen some reports of Honkai Star Rail with everything downloaded at 18 GB for Android, 15 GB for iOS, so...

Are Layers of Fear and The Medium available on the Mac App Store in your region? They are by the same developer. I am in the UAE and there were originally available but seem to have been removed as of recently.

By the way, in such a situation, had I bought them when they were available, would I still have access to them even after they were removed from my region?

Honkai: Star Rail and the rest of the Hoyoverse games have a big download after the initial startup begins, whether on Android or iOS or Windows (or Mac for Honkai Impact 3rd).

I would think that anything that requires an iPhone 15 Pro to be a huge download, but that's just me. Complex games should require more code and resources.

To follow up on this, there was a more thorough test where someone actually measured fps. The results are interesting.
The first images show the fps measurement with no background apps running and Game Mode off and on.

The second shows a game running with multiple background apps running and Game Mode off and on.

Looks like more consistent frame rates with Game Mode on.

Looks very promising. I hope we'll get similar results in mac OS Sequoia.

Great steps in the right direction that will make gaming easier. Sounds as if they've listened to the complaints.

With Default settings unnecessary features can be on. You have to experiment to find a balance between the graphics quality and the performance. A Mac mini M2 Pro with 16 GPU cores can get around 60 fps with Balanced preset.

To get around 60 fps at 1080p with max settings you need a 3070/4060 mobile.

Here are the PC settings in the game.

I would immediately turn off Depth of Field, Lens Flare, Lens Distortion and Motion Blur. Also according to Digital Foundry you should turn off RT (ray tracing) and SSR (screen space reflection). Volumetric lighting on high is almost identical to Max but gives 8% performance boost. Shadow cache ON gives another 9%. Shadow quality on High is also almost like Max. AMD Fidelity FX CACAO should be used for better look (if available on Mac) instead of SSAO and Hair strands OFF gives another 10% without much different look. Otherwise it’s always better to experiment with the different settings than use a preset.

M3 Pro 18c in synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark and GFXBench is between 4050 and 4060 mobile. In games it’s between 3060 and 4050 mobile but it all depends on the game and settings.

I just checked and they're gone from Swedish Mac App Store. In that case it's the devs who have removed the games. The Medium's performance wasn't good in reviews I saw so maybe the sales were low. Both are on Steam though. If they're not completely removed you should be able to see and download them in your purchase history.

Doesn’t match what I’ve heard elsewhere, but who knows. I certainly hope it’s not accurate.

An odd article with uncertain numbers. Too much difference between the sources to be sure. The article says ”those ports have bombed” but it also says ”Apple is likely paying developers like Ubisoft and Capcom to port these games to iPhone knowing they are doomed to fail.” So if Apple is paying what difference does it really make if the sales bomb or not? Apple wants the games and pays for them for different reasons. Microsoft still loses up to $200 on every sold Xbox after 23 years apparently so Apple has still a few years left to test the waters. Epic’s loss for its game store will reach $965 million by 2027. Everybody says Apple has the money and should pay so here you are. If that’s the case the devs haven’t lost anything. On the contrary they make some revenue too for free.

AC Mirage downloads in 13 days,
Appfigures: 123,000 2,760 buyers
Appmagic: 279,000 4,420 buyers

It means every user has downloaded the game 44-66 times??

Resident Evil 4 downloads in 6 months
Appfigure: 357,000 6,935 buyers
Appmagic: 710,000 11,570 buyers

It means every user has downloaded the game 51-61 times??

Resident Evil Village downloads in 8 months
Appfigure: 370,000 5,753 buyers
Appmagic: 817,000 26,266 buyers

It means every user has downloaded the game 31-64 times??

Death Stranding buyers (no download data available yet) in 5 months
Appfigure: 10,600
Appmagic: 17,400

Besides they’re using the current sale prices in their estimate. The normal prices are higher which means even fewer buyers but higher download rate per buyer which makes less sense. Why would each buyer download a game 60-100 times? Is it a matter of huge families with huge number of apple devices using family sharing and universal purchase? Doesn’t make sense.

Something like that happened to Resident evil Village on Mac App Store in France a few months ago, Village became unavailable, a little before releasing RE4. I contacted Capcom support… not sure if it had any effect, but when RE4 got released Village re-appeared…

Confirmation that you don't need double the space for installation. RE Village needs around 34 GB but used 30 GB during installation.

There is another away to run App Store games externally and it's to simply install macOS on the external drive. Then you can boot from that drive and use Mac App Store like on your internal drive. macOS doesn't take much space either.

That's not what I would call convenient.

Just saw DF’s video about gaming on the new ARM PCs. People said this is good for the competition and pushing Apple forward. Now the question is What compettion? Microsoft’s ARM debute and ARM64/x86 transition layer Prism disappoints really badly. It’s no where near the smooth work of Rosetta 2. £2000 Windows PC with Snapdragon X Elite can run Control with 30 fps at 768p LOW.

Steam Summer sale is on, I for sure will snatch the Witcher Trilogy collection it costs pennies now at 89% off.

And do we know if Control will land its Apple Silicon port on Steam? It is at 75% off now which is also peanuts, but now only Windows version is listed of course. The bundle with Disco Elysium is really worth it also.

With the Steam Summer sale starting the question that comes to mind is, do we need more games? I’m not against freedom of choice but when people compare the vast library of PC games to Mac I often wonder how many of those games people actually finish or play at all. Many times it feels like a continuing search for the next big title rather than actually enjoying and finishing the games you have. Now we have the answer. It’s not about playing but wishing to own and play the latest and greatest games we never get the chance to.

I am notorious for buying PC and console games then not play them.
