I am not sure iOS helps per se. While it should help with games on macOS, you run into the same market share issue that typically prevents large publishers from naturally making games for macOS.
How so? I feel a potential major issue publishers may run into here would be the unwillingness of users to buy their titles at the prices publishers typically set. But marketshare? Not sure how that really factors in.

More iOS users than macOS users, so the market share allows them to take the risk on iOS more so than macOS. I do agree that prices will be an issue, so we will see how RE4, AC:M, and Death Stranding do (assuming these are priced at console prices).

I think the deals apple will be making, are iOS (iPhone 15 pro and later) + macOS. The addressable market is much greater that way. More opportunity to make money. Also better for apple users. They will have the option to play wherever they prefer.

Oh, I see. Yeah I could see that. I guess my hope is that, given Capcom's recent words about how it's not that much work to move a game from Mac to iOS, the reverse is similar too and we could have a 'rising tide lifts all boats' situation.

Yes, that’s exactly what I think will happen. We have Capcom’s games on both, DS on both, NMS on iPad and Mac, We’ll see about AC Mirage. Jason Snell said it’s coming to macOS.

The biggest difference between Mac OS and iOS now aside from the display size and resolutions is peripheral support for keyboards and controllers. I think there are economies of scale at play that the vast majority of developers haven't realized yet, because they could essentially develop once for Mac OS/iPad OS/iOS and target a significantly larger audience than by developing just for Mac OS itself.

Going back to the original iPhone launch, Steve Jobs stated that iOS was built upon core elements of OS X, so the OS side has always had some commonalities between the Mac and iPhone. Now that both are running on the ARM ISA, the list of commonalities has only increased.

Makes you wonder why Lies of P isn't available for the iPhone 15 Pro (it is a PS4 game so it should run on the new phone just fine) to take advantage of the whole "massive iOS marketshare" the game is missing out on.

@Homy regarding those Steam Depots you found of a Mac port of CS2, turns out there was a Mac version. But last minute Valve cancelled it

It is actually possible to play this Mac version, but it's very limited since it's of course unfinished and wasn't meant to release.

Making a game compatible with on-screen buttons is a chore.

Yes, I saw the video where he accidentally revealed his Steam password and people tried to hack him.

I tried the Mac version of CS2. It runs only a bit better than the Windows version using GPTK. But it feels much better overall. Maps load faster, menus are more responsive and it is much more stable. The windows version would frequently freeze.
It's shame that Valve will never release it. No doubt that the game would run very well if Valve put the effort.
However, some maps just won't load (Nuke, Overpass, Vertigo). Maybe something is incompatible with the (unfinished) Mac version in those maps.

Typical Valve, they get something 90% done then ******* it.

It sounds to me like they were just pushing to get the damn thing out, given the complaints I’ve heard about game modes and such not in CS2 that were in GO. And first on the chopping block was the Mac port.

You don't know the half of everything wrong with CS2. The game is nowhere near finished.

Hitreg is scuffed. For a while head hitboxes were completely misaligned while crouched

maxresdefault.jpg

That got fixed, but that was minor compared to the deeper issues with hitreg, and it's all because of the new subtick rate system

On paper seems simple. Making minor tick rate updates so things would be more accurate, so hopefully make it so you no longer get CSGO'd, so what you see is what you get. But in practice it doesn't ****ing work. Animations and crosshair placement are out of sync so shots are not hitting where you're actually aiming, or just straight up don't register, or you get hit by a rifle DESPITE BEING BEHIND A WALL

Hell rifles in general are broken. Their sprays are not hitting people. It's so bad that at higher ELO shotguns are currently meta.

Then of course there's all the other countless other issues, like skins getting broken with many stickers being in the wrong places to where you put them on the gun, the majority of casual modes currently being MIA (though that's gonna get fixed soon as remakes of casual maps like Lake and Baggage were found in the game files and they look amazing,) a lot of beloved maps are currently gone such as Cache and Train DESPITE BOTH BEING IN THE INITIAL TRAILERS, the community server browser currently doesn't work, the new VAC Live anticheat system currently doesn't work, Overwatch is missing (Overwatch is a anticheat system in Counter Strike and Dota 2 where registered players review replay footage of reported players and determine if they were cheating or not,) the Linux version is having audio issues, and countless other things like many accessibility features (such as left handed mode) being gone.

The game ain't finished, not even close, and it feels like they rushed it out because they set the Summer 2023 deadline and promised since Half Life Alyx to make Valve Time a thing of the past. It'll eventually get better as CSGO was in a similar state when it launched before Valve took over, but man it just feels awful. Is it any wonder CS2 is now Valve's lowest rated game ever sitting at Mixed Reviews?

We are happy to announce that The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will soon have Apple silicon M1, M2, and macOS Ventura support.

However, we will be discontinuing support for OS X 10.7.5, OS X 10.8.2, macOS 10.15, and changing the new minimum macOS requirement to macOS 11.0. This is because the technology we are using, the JIT-compatible memory management and Apple's Game Controller framework, require a minimum version of macOS 11.0. These updates are necessary to provide support to Apple silicon chips.

We want to ensure that players have time to prepare for these changes. As such, we are giving a 30-day notice before we discontinue support for these specific operating systems.

To continue playing on macOS lower than 11.0, keep the old version of the game. To do it on Steam and GOG, disable automatic updates. On AppStore no action is necessary. On all platforms, if the game is uninstalled, the latest update will be the only one available to install. However, on GOG rolling back to an earlier version is possible.

Awesome! Next Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. ;) I guess CD Project Red hasn't heard how often macOS breaks games for gamers and developers. 🙃

Funny posts on Reddit. People are applauding CD Project Red and dissing Valve. 😄

Lies of P is now on Steam too for Mac, after release on Mac App Store earlier. It'll be $10 cheaper for me on Steam but I wait for a sale. Don't have time anyway. :)

That was unexpected. I'm not sure why they decided that it was profitable to port these old games.
I don't think they'll port the Witcher 3, as it would require much more work. At least the previous two had Mac versions. They could still use openGL, which is compatible with Apple Silicon.

Maybe, but these bugs aren't OS-specific I suppose. Fixing them would also have benefitted the Mac version.
It's unclear why Valve changed its mind at the last moment and decided to drop the Mac.

Well, they updated The Witcher to 64-bit a couple of years ago, but the way it was done meant it couldn't run on an M series Mac. It led to a decent bit of upset.

TW2 getting updated's a tad surprising though.

Maybe Apple has payed them or made a deal like with Capcom to bring Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk, or both to Apple Silicon and this was part of the deal as a warm-up. It could also be they see all these other developers bringing their popular games to Apple Silicon and want to test the ground with older easier ports before they decide to invest more resources in the future.

Who knows but great news! Cyberpunk and W3 could make a good showcase for HW ray tracing on M3 Macs so we’ll see.

I just saw the latest numbers and Windows has less than 70% global market share. In May it was as low as 62%. macOS has over 20%. People almost always talk about Steam surveys as a norm but I have to say the gaming market potential is there or soon will be depending on how many old Intel Macs people use globally.

Hopefully there's a building partnership there between Apple and CDPR that resulted in this effort. Would be a nice get if Cyberpunk were available on M3 systems to show off the hardware raytracing expected on those. Hopefully.
