Yes, you all have WAY more experience than me and I should definitely listen to you. I'm just in love with that BlackBook design and color! ;)

I'll probably end up returning it, and then buying your recommendation. But I need to try! :)

So then...

Seize the day! Have at it! That computer will be yours!

As an Ebay seller, I tend to frown on people buying an item and then returning it because they didn't "like" it.

If there's a problem I missed, I'll gladly take it back but I don't appreciate "it didn't suit my needs" or "it didn't do what I expected" returns. IMO, it's dishonest, especially since you've done your research and know what you're in for.

If you're determined to go ahead, when you find out it's not a suitable computer for you then suck it up, resell it, and take any loss that might come with that.

I'll only return it if it has overheating issues or any of those common problems that a few users here have told me about. I won't return it if I don't like it.

Returning home today I found the 2008 15" MBP4,1 "silver" delivered to our neighbors... :)
Great condition.
Here's a picture of both the "silver key" early 2008 and the "black key" late 2008 model side-by-side.
Display brightness/resolution and sound are gorgeous and pretty the same on both models.
Started to clone "El Capitan" from my 17" early 2008 "silver key" via TargetMode/FW800-connection immediatly after I checked all functions. Cloning the Recovery-Partion with CCC was just a snap. Full cloning is running now taking about 2-3hrs.
I just can recommend going for a 15" c2d MBP4,1 with 4GB RAM. With patience you'll find a bargain below 100 bucks... (and a BassJump2-subwoofer).
(Guess all bad apples of the MBP4,1-series already died and only the sturdy-ones are left and run forever... :D)
Here's a picture of both models side by side... (ah - you should be able to listen to the sound!)

You are treading into dangerous territory with the MBP 3,1/4,1 as most are ticking time bombs with their GPUs.

I've had a bunch of them, and in fact wrote my master's thesis on one. I love them, but I've also lost a few and the LoBo can only be baked so many times(I think I can take one apart in my sleep). They cap at 6gb of RAM, but weirdly enough actually run just as fast with 4gb and it's a MUCH less expensive upgrade(4gb DDR-2 SO-DIMMs aren't cheap). Again, as much as I like the computer and that they are fully supported through El Capitan(plus Sierra if you either give up WiFi or change the card) they are not necessarily a computer I'd want as my only one.

Naaah... - only the diehards are left now! (me whistling in the dark forest...)

Henry, did you go complain to upper management? :D How an entire thread about Intel macs in the PPC forum was somehow overlooked & is a non issue - talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Anyhow, since this is now the "let's talk about any dang Mac" forum, I like my late 08 aluminum MB. It's been rock solid & has 8gb ram due to an Apple firmware slip up. Nice little machine with the added ram & one I would add to the mix of possibilities.

Uhh does this mean I can now go talk about 68k & PPC macs in the iPad forum? I would live to go preach the purity that is PPC Macs & leopard to the high sierra Intel folks. I mean we're talking gospel here. They need to hear the truth.

bobesch,
Was that a mistake on the part of the carrier or a strategic plan to keep a family member unaware of you adding yet another Mac to your collection? ;)
Haha, that would have been only one part of the plot! The other one is, that it nearly looks the same like my Powerbook ... :D

Do you also encounter odd battery-behavior? Mine sometimes drains very fast, when I think, it's in sleeping mode sitting in my bag. And loading feels likewise slow compared to other machines. Nevertheless - I like those pre-Unibody 2008 MBs with the large battery-door and easy access to the hard drive...

Well, sorry to tell you guys but I bought the ULTIMATE Apple "laptop" today that will trump anything else discussed here. If nothing else, it will have a battery life rivaling the current tbrMBPs :)

Actually, I bought it last week but only picked it up today. The replacement sealed lead acid cells to rebuild the battery pack should be here tomorrow, so I can get it powered up.

The big downside is that it weighs more than a backpack full of iBooks...

Anyone want to guess what it is? :)

I'm still running the 500gb 5400rpm spinner. It's not the original, but was an Applecare replacement.

Would you happen to know the drive model number? And if it’s a single platter? I found a Apple replacement in a MBP 2011 to be a 500gb 5400pm Single Platter drive used in the PS4.

Those generous clues of yours almost makes it sound too easy...
I'll think I'll wait until LightBulbFun or the elusive Intell weighs in with a reply.

Something from the 80's.

Sorry, Rhian. It's not about just any old Mac.

Traditionally, the forum has included discussion of Macs from the era before PowerPC, those in the 1990s with some mention of older Macs.

At some point it was agreed upon to discuss early Intel Macs (up to about 2008-9). We arrived at this agreement because most of us own one or more of these and any time we visited the Intel Mac section we were always shut down by those telling us to buy new Macs.

The mods were not agreeable to creating another specific forum just for these early Intel Macs so we discuss them here.

Being PowerPC Mac owners we understand and don't usually turn these users away with chants of "Upgrade!"

As to really earlier Macs/Apple computers though I do agree. There is another forum for that here.
[doublepost=1498491427][/doublepost]Well, going to use this thread since it's where I got the mention of Waterfox.

As of now, the only Mac I am actually using Firefox on is my Intel MBP at home.

TenFourFox on all my PowerPC Macs and Waterfox on the MacPro here at work. I am typing this in Waterfox now.

Seems to be a nice fork of Firefox.

I know, I know! But I'll let someone else guess to keep things fair ;)

Yep. My battery sucks. I'm lucky to get over an 1 hour out of it. I assumed it was due to an aging battery though. Since it lives on my desk plugged in mostly, I haven't gotten around to testing out a new battery.

Late 2011 17” MacBook Pro? o_O

EDIT: What does the ‘tbr’ in ‘tbrMBP’ stand for?

-PREVIOUS POST REMOVED-

EDIT: Read the clues more carefully, and I think I got it right, so I'm removing my answer as that seems to be what we're doing now.

Yeah, that was my guess as well. Your clues did make it sounds really easy after I saw the one about having to get the battery cells before being able to power it on. If I'm correct, the Macintosh Portable runs ONLY on battery, right?

The battery is an integral part of the circuit, and it won't work correctly with a dead battery. There are some reports of folks using a higher powered PB 100 series charger, but I didn't have any luck in that and I've also been told it can damage the DC in circuit in the computer.

I bought this from a forum member last week, and picked it up from him Sunday afternoon. It had never worked in his possession, but once I learned the quirks of it and got the rebuilt battery(mechanically) seated correctly and charged a bit it was fine.

Interestingly enough, these don't really have a power up/down mode. There's not a power button-when you open the screen and press a key they come on. You can shut it down through the OS, although they supposedly use about as much power when shut down as when asleep. There's also a hard reset button.

I knew it. 80's tech.

Just barely 80s by about 4 months. Had it been a backlit model, we'd have been thoroughly in 1990s territory.
