You would be if Mazda had forgotten to include reverse! (equally lame analogy?) ;)

Nah, not at all. Reverse is a necessary and assumed feature for a car. A speaker is not a necessary and assumed feature for a PMP. When the iPod Touch doesn't play mp3s we can talk.

There is a limited list of music that is acceptable to be played very loudly out of your phone speaker:

- War - Edwin Starr
- Old Skool - Dizzee Rascal
- Fix Up, Look Sharp - Dizzee Rascal (1st second only)

feel free to add...

:D

I love the fact that the iPod touch doesn't have a built in speaker.

You love the fact that it's missing a basic feature that you're under no obligation to even use?:rolleyes:

iTouch has no speaker because it was cut back on features so as not to take away from the iPhone market. Not to mention the fact that they need to keep their third party sound dock clients happy.

that's a very unpractical thought. apple doesn't bloat their products with a poor fluff features.

No instead they make a flawed product lacking basic features available everywhere else:

- No 3G
- No MMS
- Crap camera
- No Video camera
- No high res photos on Photo app
- No cut/copy/paste
- No mass SMS/SMS Forwarding
- No email storage
- No Flash/Java browsing
- Bluethooth sharing
- No Word/Excel/PDF document saving
- No radio
- No voice recording

I've seen your name come up every time I've read an iphone-basing post. Seriously, do you have that much time that you keep complaining about it?

I don't.. and could never understand whiners. If there's a product (iPhone) and you hate.. then why buy it? Or why complain? Just buy something else. Sheesh.. and if you DO buy something else, and still complain about the product you didn't buy..

Name me ONE product that does all that you listed above plus ALL the other stuff the iPhone does.

So every time you wanna sample something you just loaded (w/ visual interface) you've gotta stuff them buds back in your ears again, eh??

And who gives a rip about kids on the bus..........I haven't ridden a bus since grade school! WTF?

It's about having the option!! We could always *not* use them, but you can't poop 'em!

1 of something is 100% better than none of something.

some people don't have cars mate. we spend that 5000$ per year saved by not buying a car on something worthwhile and environmentally friendly. like rubber darts to throw at those wallies who blast music through their tinny phones

Red, if you want to ever post on these forums again, you might as well make a new account. Just don't use the same signature as your current, if you make one, and you can have a fresh start. :)

I'll do what I want thanks. I love my iPhone, it's a stunning piece of tech, but that won't stop me from pointing out flaws and what can be improved on in later releases.

Thanks

There are many, but for argument sake, let's just say the Nokia N95.

Now you try and find ANY phones out there that DON'T have 3G, MMS, video camera, cut copy paste, downloadable emails, mass SMS/forwarding, bluetooth sharing, high res photos, voice recording.....

Not many eh? Some would say those are basic features for a mobile phone, the first two (3G and MMS) are probably why the iPhone isn't selling well in Europe. I'm not a mac fanboy and as such see no need to defend its corner until my dying day. It's still a great phone, but the stupidity comes in what's missing.

wait, what? name ANY phone? hmmm let me think real hard about this....how about the LGVX8300 in my pocket! GASP!

Built-in speakers are in fact quite rare in mp3-players. I have seen few such devices (from Samsung IIRC). The sound-quality was utter crap. So what's the point? Even if that speaker would go unused, it would still make the device bigger and uglier.

iTouch has no speaker because it was cut back on features so as not to take away from the iPhone market.

iTouch has no speaker because it does not need one, iPhone might actually need one. Do other iPods have built-in speakers? No, and no-one complains.

Not to mention the fact that they need to keep their third party sound dock clients happy.

Yeah, because a tiny built-in speaker is totally comparable to something like iPod HiFi or other external speakers....

You and I must have different definitions of the word "phone" -- perhaps you mean smartphone? Because the Sony Ericsson in my pocket certainly doesn't have 3G, cut/copy/paste, a video camera, high res photos, ...

My point was that no one device has ALL OF the features you listed -- the Nokia N95 you mentioned does not have a touch screen (let alone multi-touch) and thus no on-screen keyboard, nor the slim looks of the iPhone, and so on.

NOBODY makes the perfect device (and how can they? Everyone has a different definition of perfect).

Though I admit the N95 looks pretty nice, and in the absence of the iPhone in Canada, perhaps is a viable contender. Too bad it would cost me $600 to get one.

LOL!!!

Here's another one I love........

"They don't need a speaker".

Follow that up w/ statements like.......

"It's so the third party people can make money!!"

And, in fact, just look on ebay.........speakers of every shape & size......ALL OVER THE PLACE!!

Now, I won't even ask the "why" 'cuz the Touch-nation here on MR is obviously enfatuated with teenage kids riding buses & blaring their favorite tunes. (Should I be notifying child protective services here in the U.S.??) LMAO!!!

I'm not asking Apple to make a perfect device. Considering $J goes on about how the iPhone is the most advanced phone out at the moment and how it's 5 years ahead of the competition... I find it a little strange that it doesn't have such basic features such as 3G, MMS, a decent camera, video camera, SMS forwarding, group SMS, cut/copy/paste, email downloading.......... - those are all standard features. Can't see how people can argue with me on that point. Perhaps it's because I don't bow down to the altar of Apple.

I love Apple, they make some quality products, but the iPhone is flawed. It makes good business sense actually. Release a flawed yet brilliant phone you know everyone will go crazy about regardless... then in a year release a MUCH better one and people will go crazy for it all over again.

Built-in speakers are in fact quite rare in mp3-players. I have seen few such devices (from Samsung IIRC). The sound-quality was utter crap. So what's the point? Even if that speaker would go unused, it would still make the device bigger and uglier.

Hardly bigger and uglier. The iPhone speaker goes un-noticed. I just don't see how you can prefer NOT having something at all, to having it but choosing not to use it. Considering it would hardly change the shape/weight/looks of the device it just seems logical to put it in.

I wouldn't mind a speaker in my iPod.

Yeah, because a tiny built-in speaker is totally comparable to something like iPod HiFi or other external speakers....

Of course not, but it still gives music without the need for earphones and could potentially put some people off spending money on a big hi-fi if all they need it for is to listen to music while making dinner for example.

News flash: neither do I. I'm happy to criticize Apple products when it is due. Apple products are heavy on form-over-function, still relatively expensive, and the quality has been declining in recent years as they, too, cut costs. However, they remain beautiful, easy-to-use, for the most part reliable, and retain that "take things a step further" user experience that is signature in Apple products.

In the context of Steve Jobs claiming that the iPhone is ahead of the competition I can see your point about the missing features. Chalk that one up to the RDF. Objectively speaking as far as what features you or I want in a phone, that's up to us to decide. You've obviously decided the iPhone is unsuitable for your needs because you must have all those features, and that's fine. I for one look at that list and think "I don't need any of that". (And, by the way, what do you mean the iPhone has no email downloading??)

Nevertheless, the fact that I cannot legally own one in Canada, is why I chose instead to get the iPod Touch. Which brings us back to the original point of the thread, which was the OP complaining that the Touch is "missing features"... which, whether for marketing reasons or whatever, they make the decision to put out the product and we make the decision to buy it or not. If Apple puts out crap products, we don't buy them, and they improve.

I'm not saying I "NEED" 3G, MMS etc... I'm just pointing out that they're very odd ommisions from an otherwise outstanding device. I see what you're saying though.

And what I meant about email downloading was... if you download an email and read it on your iPhone... if 6 hours later you're underground with no signal and you need to re-read that same email, you won't be able to because you'd have to re-download the same email again from the server. A very bizarre decision that makes very little sense.

Actually (he says as he pulls on his hip-waders), the Touch does have a speaker. As all of us who own one should know, the Touch is capable of making a limited number of audible sounds, such as when you connect it to the computer or when you set the alarms. Not that we'd ever want to listen to music through this or any other similar sort of primitive speaker.

Still this does point out one of the dumbest, "I can't believe Apple overlooked it" features of the Touch: An alarm is audible through the speaker when you set it, but not when the alarm is actually triggered. Doh! So much for using the Touch as an alarm clock.

Now, are you 100% sure that you aren't, in fact, 13 years old?

haha, so true

I'd hate the iPod touch to have a speaker, think of all the little chavy bratty kids running around blaring out the latest dance BS.

It's already bad enough with mobile phones I mean for gods sake, I don't scream the lyrics to every wolfmother track i listen to in the morning, so why should you blare out your moronic trance crap. God i hate kids, all shapes, sizes and forms there of

You can easily tell who's 13 on here because either the "I know my rights, I can do what I want" or the "i wel lyke lisnin 2 muzik wit my m8s on da bus lyke" line gets busted out, it was actually painful to type like a chav then...

Uh.. yes, I am happy. I know what I am buying, and it fulfills my needs. I don't spend time after that whining on forums.. but whatever excites you. This is not about buying something, and it goes bad.. this is about buying something fully knowing what it is capable of doing, and then going on and on about what it CAN'T do.

Yeah, there are phones which probably have all those functions.. I'd be interested in knowing if you would fork over $800+ for such a phone.. oh, and then there might be another thread you would start "My $800 phone's battery only lasts half an hour!!!!! suxzors!!!!!"

I had the Nokia N95, let's just say.. I *feel* like using Apple stuff.. the iPhone makes me want to surf.. surfing on the N95 ? lol. Apple's Logic software makes me want to open it up and start making music.. does Steinberg's Nuendo have more features? Yes, it does - it's also double the price.. and an eyesore to work with.

Sure, you can point out flaws. But like I said - geez.. I skim through posts everyday and your name is so related to every iphone bashing post there is. Seriously, why don't you just buy a phone that has all those features you need? I think it'd be cheaper to buy a macbook.

ps - I am not a mac fanboy. I love anything, any company makes - as long as it's what I need .. and considering that.. Apple products more than exceed my expectations. Wait, I forgot.. my MacBook Pro doesn't have a HD video camera.. arrghh!!

Hardly bigger and uglier. The iPhone speaker goes un-noticed.

And the iPhone is bigger, is it not? And the speaker on the iPhone is actually useful for conference-calls and the like. FOr the listening to music or something like that it's utterly useless.

I just don't see how you can prefer NOT having something at all, to having it but choosing not to use it.

I prefer it because having that utterly useless feature in the device would make it bigger and more expensive.

Considering it would hardly change the shape/weight/looks of the device it just seems logical to put it in.

It's logical to have a speaker in a phone, but what use does it have in an iPod? So you could "enjoy" your music through a tiny mono-speaker? Where DO I sigh up?

Of course not, but it still gives music without the need for earphones and could potentially put some people off spending money on a big hi-fi if all they need it for is to listen to music while making dinner for example.

It gives you music through a tiny, crappy-sounding mono-speaker. I could see someone like Creative adding that kind of non-feature on their devices, but not Apple.
