Who cares!!!!
This was done for Wall Street and the investors. Besides, Google has already stretched itself out as far as it can.
The Google tv? FLOP!!!!
Why the hell would the networks need a middle man like Google fu***** with their money?
TV is advertising incarnate. It is pure ad dollars. The Neilson rating company is all the networks need to know who's watching their crap. Bam! And Larry Page is a computer scientist that made nothing but a freaking search engine with Brin.
This is going to be very interesting as this one trick pony starts crashing.

A leadership change is always precipitated by a perceived problem in the current direction of the company or in the current leadership.

Google has become increasingly "evil" in the last two years. I miss the days when Apple and Google were best buddies. Never thought I'd see the day where I looked more favorably on Microsoft than Google, but here it is.

I'd like to see Google get back to what they do best and that is creating a presence for themselves on every platform for advertising purposes rather than trying to supplant existing platforms with their own. Chrome OS, Chrome Browser, Google TV, and Android mobile devices are all examples of Google trying to supplant existing platforms with their own to generate advertising impressions instead of partnering with others to bring Google services to other devices.

There was a time when Web properties and services was their thing -- and they were/are really really good at creating awesome web-based tools. However, I believe the threat of an "app store" becoming more popular than the Web or Facebook becoming a primary "launch point" for users on the Web has led Google to react with some offerings that fall far below the level of quality that was seen in their Web properties. Google needs to innovate by creating the "next best thing" on the Web instead of trying to copy Apple or Facebook or whoever threatens to reduce their advertising audience.

The way I see it, Google would have faired far better by partnering with Apple to be their advertising platform partner rather than trying to compete with Apple. As far as Facebook goes, I don't have a good answer. They tried to supplant Facebook with Wave and failed -- the way I see it they need to innovate and offer something better than Facebook.

And somebody please tell me how trying to get the industry to switch from H.264 to WebM is going to generate a single dollar more in advertising revenue? They are really spinning their wheels on things that are not yielding more revenue.

Does Larry get to be the creepy Google guy now?

I saw this coming. As soon as Jobs announced his leave, I knew Schmidt would copy him. :D

No one who knows anything ever really liked this creep Schmidt anyway, Lar has a far better reputation, but of course power gets to people's heads so I don't know what kind of person he is nowadays.

Google has become a very evil corporation, blatant disrespect for privacy, pimping the whole ad business on the net and the mobile space, stealing java patents to make android, gathering a huge amount of intelligence on everyone on the globe, throwing all sorts of garbage on apple (that 1984 commercial where they claimed apple is big brother - talk about the pot calling the kettle black) etc. etc. I don't think they can reverse that I am afraid.

It might seem strange but I'm going to through it out there. I wonder it's possible in the long run for Schmidt to replace Steve Jobs as CEO of Apple? Steve Jobs obviously has respect for Schmidt otherwise he would never have been on Apple's board and it's very likely the falling out between Schmidt and Jobs has been overblown by the media seeing that those two still appear to be having coffee together. Schmidt can do at Apple what he did at Google, that is be a CEO who is focused on managing the business which will free Steve Jobs up to be the visionary as Chairman and should take some stress off him. The reason for having Schmidt as CEO over Cook is that Schmidt has the broad market recognition and general trust which will go a long way toward any Steve Jobs switchover.

Poppycock.

Or as SJ once said, the "do no evil" mantra has been pure BS for a long time already...no surprises here.

Their only product is a channel for advertising.
Maybe not "evil" but never really as on the side of good as that slogan was trying to make them out to be.

Their new stance as the defenders of "Open" is about as convincing.
Especially seeing most moves in that direction as loosely veiled grabs for control.

1) but of course power gets to people's heads so I don't know what kind of person he is nowadays.

2) Google has become a very evil corporation
1) I agree I remember the smart, tech minded, well balanced Steve's. Wozniak & Jobs.

Woz remained focused as his star rose being the brilliant engineer. He left after he reached his goals, one of which was to lead the balanced life he currently lives.

Being forced out left Jobs angry, bitter & revengeful. Once he returned he channeled his anger into success admirably. Unfortunately he also morphed into an ego maniac. Yet that makes big points with less educated impressionable followers.

2) Now with a vast cult like empire he must have an arch enemy. Google is the obvious choice & Evil is a simple word that the Apple followers understand and love to use.

- Starting from April 4, Larry Page, Google Co-Founder, will take charge of Google's day-to-day operations as Chief Executive Officer.
Is it just me, or does that sound like COO, not CEO? Meh, marketers and their copy.

Changes like this come when someone wants to retire, and/or when actual tasks have already changed and they finally alter titles to match.

throwing all sorts of garbage on apple (that 1984 commercial where they claimed apple is big brother - talk about the pot calling the kettle black)

Indeed. Apple wants to sell me iGizmos. Google wants its fingers in every aspect of digital information to become the world's data gatekeeper. Who's Big Brother again???

I used to love Google, now they alarm me. Increasingly.

Seemed like Google was stagnating a bit recently under Schmidt, but that's just me.

Yep, that is just you.

26% increase up to $8.11billion?

Anyways, Schmidt is going to take over the "deal with the government BS" role, and Page is going to start doing the normal day to day stuff that Schmidt wasn't able to fully dedicated his time to.

Sergey is going to start leading a charge in the social department.

android is already a money maker and a good one at that, and they are forecasting around $1B per year for android, not to shabby, google's $$$ is just fine

That's a great forecast for a product they give a way free.

I think Google should patent this under creative accounting, they found a way to multiply by zero and get a much larger number then zero.

Steve is not coming back. Schmidt has been marginalized to "special projects" and will bow out slowly (if not gracefully).

This is the start of a new era.

Yeah and more educated non impressionable non followers like yourself like to reply with ad hominem to other posters instead of arguments which you conveniently omitted even from my quote. Laughable.

(btw, Woz living a balanced life? What are you his shrink, his priest? As opposed to who living a balanced life? To all the good people working at apple for the past twenty or so years and advancing technology beyond Woz's circuit boards of the 80s? And who are you to judge Jobs as an ego maniac?)

Restructuring at the top is not a good sign.... They're worried about something and feel the market may slip away from them if they don't focus. It hints at getting worried... maybe a open systems OS and mobile OS is draining too many resources for little return????

That's how I see it... and how I've seen it in the past at big companies.

BTW... what were their earnings? I have not seen yet.

Yup. Becoming Bloat-Ware. Android will fade quickly with the Verizon iPhone, Win7 phone, and IMO, a resurgence of RIM.

IMO, Android was a good idea that ate at McDonalds 3X per day. Google can't regain control now. It's like Vista. :apple:

They are not giving it away for free, they are giving it away with a heavy price on advertising monopoly and compromising users' privacy.

This is a really a Page 2 post. Yes, Google and Apple competitors, but you don't see something here every time HTC/Samsung/HP/Dell does something.

Schmidt is no longer part of the Apple board of directors, so there's no direct connection anymore.

Indeed. Sadly, quoted comments from members on my Ignore list still appear when non-ignored members (like you) quote them, but it's funny that an Apple basher would complain about Apple users' use of the word "evil" when, in fact, it's Google that uses that very word in their corporate mantra. So which customer group are the simpletons again?

What's really laughable is how the Googlebots somehow believe they're thinking for themselves when they buy Google's propaganda hook, line and sinker. Google loves you, you see. Free. Open. Choice. Not evil. Nope. Not evil at all. Baaaaa.
