Amen. My father always taught me this very simple truth: "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Apparently some others' fathers forgot to mention this important fact.

My favorite Google analogy was posted a few days ago by another forum member (wish I remembered who), that of Pinocchio and Pleasure Island, where the Coachman plies the boys with all sorts of fun and freebies until they devolve into donkey slaves due to a magical curse.

Fear Google.

Maybe this will soften relations between Apple & Google. I don't think Google Maps has been updated on iPhone in a couple of years.

.....and it sorely needs it! The latest Google maps is incredible in my opinion.

Ah ah ah nice, thanks:)

Being forced out left Jobs angry, bitter & revengeful. Once he returned he channeled his anger into success admirably. Unfortunately he also morphed into an ego maniac. Yet that makes big points with less educated impressionable followers.

I know Steve Jobs. Steve is a friend of mine. Steve's always been an egomaniac. He is just focusing it much tighter these days. He's an extraordinary visionary, I think one needs to be a little nuts to be good at seeing the future.

Now with a vast cult like empire he must have an arch enemy. Google is the obvious choice & Evil is a simple word that the Apple followers understand and love to use.

A strong company needs a strong competitor to remain strong.

Going into the 1980s Apple had a strong place in the enterprise market with the Apple II. They lost it to IBM when it entered the microcomputer market, as it was called back then. For IBM is was an easy move to extend their influence from the "Big Iron" to the general office, where they already had influence with their lines of typewriters and word processors. Then Apple's competition morphed into "IBM compatibles" before becoming MicroSoft vs MacOS.

This time around Jobs has learned his lessons well. He dominates the new markets he selects and doesn't give competition a chance to regroup. He also doesn't only rely on one or two ways to dominate. For example, even if Google were to have a superior OS with Android, the manufacturers need to buy LCD screens to build the products, and Apple has tied up much of the world production...at superior low prices.

If you look carefully at the big picture, Apple (Jobs) has made it increasingly hard for competition to take more then a tiny fraction of the market Apple has claimed for itself.

I mention the "then" and "now" because in one case Apple was marginalized out of their market and won some deep affection as "the little guy" against "Evil Microsoft, the big bully."

This time around Apple has to be careful to not be cast as the "the big bully," and I think they are succeeding at avoiding the label, especially with Google there to assume the position as the "heavy."

Being a market leader is a more dangerous position then being "the little guy" for winning the hearts of the consumer. I hope Apple can continue to walk that thin line, but time will only tell.

android is already a money maker and a good one at that, and they are forecasting around $1B per year for android, not to shabby, google's $$$ is just fine

ha! why am i not surprised? i guess apple invented copy and paste on cell phone OS and multitasking huh?

why would a relationship between apple and google translate into anything good for consumers? Both are making very strong products to compete with each other, let the iron curtain remain!

because PING and mobile me are far superior products ha!

Actually that's a horrible income number for such large company and such huge emphasis on it. Apple didn't invent "copy&paste," but seems like even Google copied it from Apple.

yeah that's it, we are all sh*ting ourselves with google.

Then explain the reason anytime anything Google is announced all the usual suspects come out crying against all things Google. Why is this on Macrumors then? Front Page? Hardcore Apple consumers seem to have a deep down fear that their gadgets will one day be less talked about than googles.

You guys are all missing it

Government advisory says it all. What major project just started hiring staff and took out their headquarters this week.

Anyone?

Let's try this again, where did Schmidt put a lot of his focus during 2008, unrelated to Google?

Coming together? He's staying at Google, so he's not going inside the White House, he's going to be a major advisor to the Obama re-election campaign. Probably work higher up with Gibbs in communication, or more likely, the Obama campaign app from 2008 was killer as a communicator. If that were enhanced upon, able to pull voter lists on the go, call voters anywhere, they have something fantastic going on. Technology and the Presidential campaign (on team O) is why Schmidt is stepping down.

Whats the Ballmer Effect?

Windows 7?
Windows Phone 7?

Microsoft still have 90% of the computer market and windows phone 7 is, so far, a really great product... dont get me wrong i like apple stuff but saying "microsoft is dead" "google is dead" even "RIM is dead" just because you dont like it or you dont use it dosent mean a product is dead or sucks, outside US, RIM is used by 80% of the smartphone market, just to give you an example, here in Mexico almost everyone with a Data PLan have a BB, Google IS maybe the new microsoft of this decade, maybe not for an OS per se, but for all the products they have just to mention i think some people here with OS X prefers Chrome than Safari, when you open your browser you go to google almost 99% of the time, why not we all hope Google, Microsoft, RIM and Apple all become big, great succes companies, competition is good for consumers :p
(BTW, sorry for my English :p)

H.P. Announces Board Shake-Up Under New Chief

Published: January 20, 2011

"SAN FRANCISCO – Hewlett-Packard announced a major boardroom shake-up on Thursday in the aftermath of the furor over the forced resignation of Mark V. Hurd as chief executive.

The upheaval is the first major step under Léo Apotheker, who was hired as chief executive last year after Mr. Hurd resigned following accusations of sexual harassment. A board investigation found no evidence of harassment, but instead found irregularities in Mr. Hurd’s expense reports.

The board faced withering criticism for its handling of Mr. Hurd’s forced departure. A shareholder lawsuit accuses the board of mismanagement for awarding Mr. Hurd a lucrative severance package.

The company said four members would not stand for re-election to the board in March: Joel Hyatt, John Joyce, Robert Ryan and Lucille Salhany. H.P. gave no reason for their departure, although they were seen by some as loyal to Mr. Hurd.

I never really liked Eric Schmidt, so I'm happy Larry Page is taking over as CEO.

Hopefully this means better Apple Google relations which in turn means better products for consumers like us.

how can Apple and Google have better relations when they are direct competitors? it is like saying AT&T and Verizon have good relationship.

to have Apple make its products better and more updates, they have to be under pressure from Google, and vice versa. iphone is better today because of Google. iphone is on verzizon now is because of google. ipad 2 is much better because of google. without google, Apple would just sit and wait for Microsoft to catch up.

I read this article about thirty minutes ago, came back to it, and I'm still trying to figure out how this relates to Apple..

Well Google isn't a bank or a pet food company. It is in fact a company in the same industry. You can bet high level executive of each company take not of what the other does.
