The 8 is not going to hold value that well - think about it. Next year it will me up against used X's, whatever souped up X replacement they come out with, and "9" (for want of a better name) bringing OLED and face ID to the Everyman. The market for a used 8 will be pretty weak.

I upgrade every year from Verizon and don't need to resell my device ever. I just get the new one I want and give Verizon my used phone. I couldn't care less on resale value.

No one was buying the X, and had a laundry list of complaints for it, but every thread about the 8 preorder, "Everyone's waiting on the X." Clearly the majority of annual upgraders are still gonna be ordering the X, and skip the 8 it would seem no matter what kind of things people may be saying about the X. Must be to get others out of their way when preordering.

Was just thinking, next year when Apple announces a new phone again around this time (2nd-3rd week of September), the people that got an 8 or 8 Plus will be able to hop on it, whereas people that get the X will have to wait until Oct (or later because of backorders) to upgrade for their yearly upgrade.

And I am ok with that to be honest. My guess is the iPhone 2018 model will be the 2nd version of the X (the 11?) and therefore better than this first version (better meaning fixing or upgrading any features).
Precisely my plan.

It's difficult to assess what this means for Apple. The X will be in very limited supply, so high demand for that product still means significantly lower sales overall.

On the other hand, Apple are now selling many more models of iPhone than they used to; 60 configurations in total. Perhaps the price drops led to increased sales of those lower-end models.

I'm glad to hear people are not buying a slightly improved 6S as frantically as they used to.

Lots of people (like myself) are using an iPhone 6. The 8 offers a 3 generation processor leap, and double (or triple for the Plus) the RAM, as well as much improved cameras and other features. I've decided to wait for the X, but I was very close to getting an 8 Plus. For $300 less than the X, it still seems like a decent purchase to me.

People who talk about "incremental upgrades" are usually the ones who already have last year's phone. But guess what, most people don't buy a new flagship phone every year. For most of the people buying it, the 8/8 Plus will be a substantial upgrade.

I was a little disappointed in Verizon's trade in value this year. When I looked it was only $300 for my 7+. Last year when I upgraded from my 6 I really wasn't planning on it but when they gave me $650 to trade it in I kinda figured it was a no brainer.

X or not, they're too expensive. Only reason the X will sell out immediately is because production will be so small.
It's relative. I think I saw a report that these new phones are more powerful than some MacBooks so given the cost of the MacBooks are the phones overpriced? Especially if you calculate the cost per minute of use for most people.

Most people have been conditioned into paying for their phone in monthly installments, so whilst the jump from a $700 to $1000 is significant, the jump from $35/month to $50/month is negligible, especially in amongst all the other monthly costs most people have.

Are we complaining that phones are available for release day? Wow

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Watch Series 3 models became available for pre-order at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time today, and many of the new products remain available for launch day delivery over five hours later.

iPhone 8 is slated for September 22 delivery in every color and storage size on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, for example, while only a few T-Mobile and SIM-free configurations have slipped to up to 3-4 week shipping estimates.

iPhone 8 Plus supplies are slightly more constrained, but even the larger smartphone remains estimated for September 22 delivery in several colors and storage sizes on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint.

Supplies may vary by model, but based on shipping estimates, demand may be skewing towards T-Mobile or SIM-free models in Space Gray or Gold. Silver and Sprint appear to be least popular color and carrier respectively at this point.

Quite a few models remain available for launch day delivery in other countries too, such as Australia, Canada, Spain, and Singapore.

Back in the United States, customers can still order an Apple TV 4K with 32GB storage with September 22 delivery. The 64GB model has slipped to a 2-3 week shipping estimate on Apple.com.

Apple Watch Series 3 is the most constrained new product of all. Shipping estimates for many case and band combinations with GPS + Cellular have slipped to up to 4-5 weeks in the United States and elsewhere. Quite a few Wi-Fi and GPS only versions, including some Nike+ models, remain available for launch day delivery.

iPhone X pre-orders begin Friday, October 27.

Most people always paid $1,000 for phones going back to the original iPhone. The difference is the cost was always "hidden" in the cost of your 2 yr agreements. Now it's in your face and plain to see. So people are suddenly "shocked," at how expensive phones are.

Sadly, plans aren't really any cheaper.

And when they don’t then people complain that Apple is intentionally limiting supply to create the illusion of demand. Or they claim that Apple operations aren’t doing their jobs managing supply chain. Now it’s doom and gloom because everything isn’t on a 6 week backorder? Good grief.

I was too excited to get my first new iPhone in 4 years (been using a workhorse of a 5S) ;) I was up at 3:30 am and feared I'd be waiting a month before delivery. Glad I was wrong. iPhone 8+ will be an awesome phone. The iPhone X, obviously, would have been *the* phone to get, but not for $250 more than the plus (factoring in the $50 bump in AppleCare).
I think the 8 Plus is a solid choice. Looking at the X, I made some mock-ups based on posted size. If you use the screen mode that hides the cutout while watching video the screen shows the same width as the 7/8 Plus. You really dont gain anything with the X unless you want to watch everything with the notch in the view. Physically the Plus is bigger but I have been carrying one for 3 years now and it has been no big issue. You made a great choice.

Last year the carriers literally gave away the 7s. With deals no where near as hot this year and the X coming soon most 8s should be readily available.

I know we're trying to read tea leaves in the dark with a blindfold on here but this does seem like it could mean a disappointing launch for Apple. I'll be interested to see how iPhone X compares. I'd expect it is the more desired phone this year (maybe?) plus we've all heard about supply constraints so it will probably be more similar to the launches we're familiar with.

edit: anecdotally it seems like demand was pretty weak last night. The threads of people waiting up to purchase seemed relatively inactive (when I looked at the forums I wasn't even sure which thread(s) were for those which people who were waiting were chatting in) and the "buy" threads on the main page only have low hundreds of comments whereas I think in previous years they were past 1000. I also checked and all ATT models were still at Sep 22 before I signed out last night about an hour after launch, I don't think all models had remained launch day available nearly that long in the past. Maybe Apple already expected that the demand was going to focus on the X but if they thought the 8 was going to be the main phone with a smaller subset going for the X there are probably some nervous people at Apple this morning.

I don't know if I should consider this a good or a bad news.
If everyone is buying iPhone X, at that price, I'm afraid they're going to keep prices really high even next year.
I guess we'll have to wait until the end of October and find out what happens, but I think X is going to sell like hot cakes...

Not surprising. I ordered a 64GB 4K Apple TV and a series 3 non-cellular watch for the wife at 3:02 eastern time, without a hiccup. The next month and a half of waiting for the X already feels like an eternity!
Imagine adding another 2-3 months to that wait time and that's likely what lies ahead. :p

I'm a little surprised, a little not, that the 8 series preorder went as smooth. I wonder if there were no X, what 8 ship times would be looking like this morning.
