I have a 8 on order for collection next Friday. I am going from a 6+ so it should be a decent upgrade for me. Lots of people are complaining that it (the 8) has the same form factor as the 6, 6s and 7 but one of the things I am most looking forward to is the glass back. I am hoping the back is scratch resistant so I don't need to keep my phone in a case to protect it. Can anybody confirm?

I for one will not upgrade to the 8 especially at this price and knowing the X marks the beginning of a new era.
Next year I don't expect a 9 but more 8s with a couple sizes of OLED (11/11+?)

I wonder how much this is Apple actually managing to make enough for launch day vs demand more heavily favouring the iPhone X than they had anticipated.

He's not wrong, I had to look it up and on Google Trends it's all about Nike, with the most searches coming from the Philippines and Ukraine (sneaker-happy places).

It's been a word since 1941, but usage has picked up in the last 3-4 years, likely due to Nike.

Color is a fine word - no need to pick up this usage.

You both are right and a little wrong. This is not a "new" word and the usage is not new. "Colorway" is a term used in design and retail for years and years. It is very common amongst designers of clothing, shoes, etc.

Most people always paid $1,000 for phones going back to the original iPhone. The difference is the cost was always "hidden" in the cost of your 2 yr agreements. Now it's in your face and plain to see. So people are suddenly "shocked," at how expensive phones are.

Not at all. The iPhone 5S retailed for about 599€ here. The iPhone 6 started the trend of being more expensive with 649€. Now the base model of the iPhone 8 costs 899€!

Or

because the retail value was lower i could get the iPhone for 1€ on a 49€ plan (this included a monthly iPhone payment + unlimited calls etc) but since the retail price of the iPhone keeps going up i would have to pay 299€ instead of 1€ PLUS 59€ for a plan now

I agree. There have been one or two rumours of an even bigger iPhone (more than 6"). I'm sure next year we'll get an updated edge-to-edge 5.8" iPhone and a larger iPhone Plus. Next year must be when they plan on dropping the numbers, too.

So did they make too many of the 8's like the 5C and no one bought it??

Or what??

Why is so much still available??
There are probably a lot of people waiting for the iPhone X (myself included) and the availability was also quite high I assume. There is no part in this design that has proven tricky, unlike with the iPhone 7 Plus where the Double Camera and Jet Black caused problems.
And I think that Apple wanted to make sure that there is enough stock (walk in customers, "impuls" buyers etc.), as they want to sell every phone possible.

I'm not preordering, but I'm getting an 8+ when my schedule calms down in November. I'm going from a 6. I mainly want a camera that shoots RAW and the new system on a chip. I have questions about how I will like the notch and FaceID. I would rather pay $800 for a form factor I know I like than take a flyer on the X.

After the third re-cycle of the 6 platform/style, it's a non-starter except for people coming from another planet. It's essentially the same device form factor from 6 to 6s to 7, and now 8. No thanks!

If you're only interested in form factor then you're missing the point of newer technology entirely. You are simply looking for the next shiny new toy.

It's funny to me how people have completely taken for granted the mind bending technology that goes into today's iPhones.

What I am worried about; Apple's predictions for this quarter indicated quite some growth overall. With the iPhone X being delayed I really don't see that happening? Or will Services and iPad sales grow so much that they can compensate for the rather slow initial order wave of the iPhone 8?

iPhone 8 Plus.... all the working stuff from the X, without all the rushed/compromised stuff. I'm on iUP and I upgraded from a 7 Plus to an 8 Plus. I'll enjoy all the new technology from next Friday and get the "non-compromised-to rush-out the-door" next gen phone XI next September

Supplies may vary by model, but based on shipping estimates, demand may be skewing towards T-Mobile or SIM-free models in Space Gray or Gold. Silver and Sprint appear to be least popular color and carrier respectively at this point.

I have a hard time believing this. It seems more likely that Apple simply doesn't allocate as many of the GSM devices to T-Mobile as they do to AT&T (usually it's the exact same device just bundled with a different SIM, right?). Of course, my only real evidence is anecdotal and limited to waiting in line for the iPhone 5S at an Apple Retail store. (They had exactly zero 64gig gold 5S GSM on T-Mobile while they had a handful for AT&T.) And every year since, T-Mobile have been some of the hardest to find / sells out first, at least directly from Apple.

So of the most popular phone / color / size, which one got backordered first out of AT&T and Verizon?

Exactly ... people are forgetting that 8 Plus is pretty much 80% the same as the X

Thank you! My exact words.

But but but.... everyone on MR says they're overpriced and don't offer enough to make it worth buying. I'm sure they won't bother buying since they suck so bad.

Those two statements are not contradictory. For some customers the iPhone X is priced above the point of good utility value. They certainly don't suck, but the additional features on top of the similarly speced iPhone 8 won't justify the $300 premium.

Also, the iPhone X will almost certainly be supply constrained for a while. There will be enough people who either want to pay the fashion tax to have an exclusive device or would pay almost any amount just to have it first to sell multiple millions of devices.

Apple will easily sell all they can make initially. The bigger question is where is the break-even point once they have ramped the supply line up enough to satisfy the demand. Will the same number of people buy a $1,000 iPhone X as bought the iPhone 7?

If you check the cheaper version is the one that is having more demand, the iPhone X with a price of $999 will be too expensive for most of the people.

Also remember that the iPhone X will be on sale until November this means that Apple has a lot of days to build thousands of phones more to avoid shortages issues.

I was hopping that the new iPhones have a 512GB version, I don't understand how people cna buy a 64GB version. My iPhone is always without space because 256GB is too low when you can record 4K videos and Live Photos.

Buying an iPhone 8 Plus with 64GB is crazy.
I use iCloud Photos. Makes it a non-issue.

iPhone 8 is not enough for me to upgrade from my 6 and the X is way too much money for a phone. I don't want to unlock my phone with my face...
I'm still rocking a 6 as well (new battery/screen). And leading up to this iPhone season, I was 100% upgrading to whatever the next gen device was. But now... I'm conflicted for basically the same reasons you list.
Ugh... was so ready to preorder (emotionally, financially). I too may pass...

But the 20 percent can be huge, depending on your needs.

For me, the superior OLED screen, having a bigger screen size, despite the entire phone being shorter, narrower and lighter than an 8x, two hours more battery life and Face ID needing only one hand to unlock ( I never could unlock TouchID with one hand - or if I just washed my hands - TouchID never would unlock for me) are all decent reasons to go "X".

Think it's more Apple are trying to push the X on people so they didn't bother with any major upgrades to 8 but it's backfired and people who was going to get X are detared by its price and don't see any benefit over getting 8 and then don’t see a difference between 7 and 8 so not bothered till next year

Come release day I doubt the X will even be in short supply , Apple have already delayed the phone a month and they won't want the PR of more delays and people buying the 8 or a competitor phone like note 8 over the wait times so I bet they will overproduce and it won't sell as well as they think

Oh don't get me wrong. It's ***** awesome. I just can't bring myself to pay $1200 for a phone. I'm dealing with the incremental upgrade from 7+ to 8+ and hoping those sweet sweet screens filter down to the rest of us plebs with the next update.

Or they don't see much difference between the 7 and 8

This is how I feel. I'm on a 6. I was going to upgrade. Maybe even to a plus. The size still bothers me. I'm a small human so small hands, BUT I'm a photo junkie. Always taking photos and videos, cataloguing for family... love it! Incredible to believe how amazing smartphone cameras are these days.

64GB is probably too small. 128 GB for the 8+ would be perfect, but they only have 256. So that's $1200 CDN. Then I see the X is $1300. So maybe that's an option.

Then I realize that's almost the same cost as a Macbook! Gulp!

So for now, the parachute has been pulled on upgrading. I simply don't see the value.

Not even 'wowness' to compel a change (for me). Not judging others if they upgrade.

Cheers,
Brian
