This feature was mostly useless for me from the beginning. If you ever restart your phone, you have to enter your password to download an app. At least half the time this happens to me because I don't download apps often enough.

Hit reply ready to eat your brains until I noticed "useless for me..." I really should learn to read before responding.

Move on interwebs, there is nothing to see here.

Oh, and have a nice day b0nd18t.

As with most of my iPhone's, at least once per day or two the thing needs a restart, after a restart Touch ID won't work for purchases, so I rarely get to take advantage of that feature anyway.

No, but he let MobileMe and iOS 2.0 ship out the door, which were both massively terrible at release. iOS 2.0 wasn't usable until 2.1. It was just dog slow. MobileMe.....well it was just garbage and never really got off the ground.

This bugged feature was not able to be tested by the public or the unprivileged developer beta testers. Apple only turn on the switch to enable this yesterday; moments before the final release.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the touch ID or the OS update, its just Apple being silly about security rather than being clever.

Since I got an iPad Air 2, I found touch is annoying. If you don't log in for 48 hours then you have to use a password. Let the battery shut down, you have to use a password.

Not sure what’s so silly about that. Your data is encrypted with a password and Touch ID does not store or have access to that password. The system will allow you to unlock your keychain with your fingerprint as an alternative method, but it won’t expose the password to Touch ID. A reboot locks your keychain again, requiring your password. Touch ID couldn’t do that for you, unless Apple decides to store your keychain password on the device as well.

I think this is actually an important security consideration, because fingerprints are just not all that secure. Having to enter your password every once in a while not only makes sure that the importance of that password is made clear, but also serves as a reminder so that you don’t forget your password after a while.

Granted, it’s annoying to enter your iTunes password for purchases after a reboot. That is unnecessary and only few third-party developers actually do this. However, personally, I only very rarely have to enter my password, mostly because I don’t let my device die (which you shouldn’t do anyway if you want to keep your battery healthy) and I don’t let it lie around for 48 hours.

Touch ID is a convenience feature and there to make the temporary relinquishment of the password acceptable. It’s not meant to be a replacement. If you don’t get to use it then you should use the password instead.

It's pretty crazy that got by the extensive (even public, right?) beta testing.

The problem is that Apple don't release real betas. What they release is a heavily cut down and modified version of what they actually release in the end (to prevent leaks).

Any software engineer will tell you that this basically invalidates all of the testing.

It's a PR exercise, only.

I guess that's why Apple uses a picture of Mickey Mouse on the face of the new Apple Watch. It has become a Mickey Mouse company.

Enabling Touch ID for iTunes and App Store is not under Settings --> iTunes & App Store. It's under Settings --> Touch ID & Passcode

What's more alarming than the QA for updates are the amount of people, in this thread, for whom Touch ID never worked for them from the beginning...

I'm sitting here thinking "Why haven't they returned their iPhone's/iPad's?" and "What's up with Apple's QA for the device's touch sensor before shipping?"

I know many people who just don't care about touch ID and its effectiveness doesn't weigh into the quality of their device. they use the four number pin code. Just yesterday I noticed my coworker was entering a pin code to unlock her iphone 6. After I asked her why she is not using the fingerprint security and she said half the time it does not work for her so she quit bothering with it.

Does she know for sure its a problem with her finger/software or could it be the hardware itself?

I myself use TouchID all the time and can't imagine having to enter a pin or password all the time. I can't imagine TouchID being so erratic.

I'm having the same issue, also I am not able to toggle off password toggle for App Store purchases. It asked if I wanted to turn off password for free downloads and how I am able to turn it off in the settings. When I go to settings these options are no where to be found.

This is only a very minor inconvenience. Apple will fix it soon. There's nothing else to discuss really and it doesn't point to a QA problem within Apple. This is one of the best iOS updates Apple has ever delivered.

Also.. this seems more like an App Store issue than iOS issue. Apple Pay Still works with Touch ID within apps and in store. May not even need a iOS update to fix this.

Touch ID not working here either for the store, iPhone 6

I'm writing this from my iP6 Plus at my Apple Store, have a genius bar Appt. We'll see what happens. Touch ID, WiFi, and Safari broken.

Why are Apple so good at breaking their own products?

If I had to guess they've reduced their expenses by closing the quality control department. :)
