I don't get why targeted advertising is so "evil" to everyone... I mean... I would much rather see ads for products that are relevant to me and some random crap.
I don't think it's personalized ads for products that are bad. The problems are:
1 - They're collecting personal info which could be used against you if it ended up in the wrong hands. IE, answers to security questions which would allow a hacker into your bank account. Most people also have personal info somehow contained in their passwords/codes, IE, birthdays or anniversaries, or sports teams, or names of people or makes of cars or types of food. Everyone knows they're bad passwords, but we're told that not just because it's bad, but because breaches tell us that people are still doing it all the time.
Or other embarrassing things that people could be blackmailed over. IE, whether they're fertile, or if they needed therapy or intervention of something... these companies harvest this info without our knowledge. Maybe nobody at Facebook is evil, but it's possible that Facebook's security is breached, and then nefarious actors have this info. Except that's not even needed - Facebook will just sell the info to whoever will pay for it.
2 - Then there's the issue that some ads want to influence behavior, not sell a product. Ads trying to discourage drinking and driving are good. Ads trying to discourage you from voting, to suppress turnout for a candidate or position? That's generally considered evil. It's nice that Facebook has said they won't do political ads anymore, but I suspect there's other more subtle/sinister ways thought manipulation via ads can be used.
Maybe a foreign country could do a disinformation campaign in a rivaling nation so that people don't have as many kids, or engage in riskier behaviors, or make stupid choices in college, all to drive down a nation's GDP over the course of a generation. That was all off the top of my head just now... it's not hard to imagine how this works. The US engaged in propaganda to suppress morale since at least WWII and through the Cold War. The Koreas do it to each other all the time right now. Seems like targeted ads makes for a trivial way of doing this - no need to drop pamphlets or set up broadcasting stations.
