She doesn't want to sniff the Tabloid? :D

iPhone OS and Mac OS X, variations thereof, depending upon the task.

I just skipped to the end so forgive me if I'm being redundant but did anyone else notice the awkward moment at the end where the anchor confessed she was glad that she's not in school anymore because she likes to smell her text books and the CEO just half chuckled?

Been mentioned and made fun of. Sorry, you're a bit late.

oops... didn't that guy get the memo?

not really sure how so many people are opposed to an iphone os based tablet without actually seeing it in action. besides, isn't apple rolling out an overhauled iphone os 4.0 with the tablet?

Well the problem is that I don't expect the tablet to run Logic or Aperture. I guess it will run a mobile version of iPhoto but you get the picture. So I don't see me switching tasks between a tablet and a MacBook Pro. I'm sure iPhone OS 4.0 will be great but it won't beat 10.6.

But then again the Tablet may introduce an internet you can actually touch, so it may change the way we use the internet. We'll see.

My Predictions!

Here are my predictions:

1. Contents, contents, contents that will take advantage of the device. New way to distribute contents obviously the ebooks. One possibility is the monthly subscription of streaming TV shows or just a much lower price downloadable per episodes.
2. DOCK yes the dock! I am not talking about the OSX like dock not the software feature but the hardware. The device will be charge like an iPhone with the dock. However you will be putting your dock next to your HDTV with mini-HDMI cable (sold separately). As soon as you put the device to the dock it will auto shut-off the screen then a Front Row like interface will appear on your HDTV screen.
3. iPhone /iPod Touch remote control app! Now that you have the Front Row like interface on your HDTV screen, of course you need something to control that device wirelessly.
4. eBook reader app! We want a kindle like experience to read the book so this will disable the bright color of your screen to have a much pleasing reading experience.

Conclusion: These are just my predictions none of these statements is from any some form of insider information ;). Other than I’ve mentioned above some most common features that could possibly added are the 3G chipset, GPS capable, a faster processor and better graphics, OLED screen (for high end), 802.11n, 8”-10” screen size and a hybrid OS something that I really want to see.

Thanks for ruining the surprise for me McGraw-Hill CEO. Now steve Jobs is going to beat you up.

There is no way Steve approved that announcement; and if anyone thinks he did better have a damn good explanation as to why.

Less than a day before the mystery device and this happens. Please....

Walking papers he may get; me thinks.;)

Please explain what exactly you find so offensive about this leak announcement. Everything he said has been well documented or expected on this site for months.

What a lot of people on this board are forgetting is that 95% of the World has no idea about the upcoming tablet and that this leak announcement will be the first they've heard of it - and are now getting very excited about this event.

Root Access
Installation of XBMC

Yes, these things will come around like they did on the AppleTV, but just the idea of ~another~ locked system really has me bugged.

Get over it. Closed ecosystems like iPhone OS + iTunes + App Store are the future of mobile computing. Period.

There are plenty of e-waste-ready netbooks for you to hack out there. Now make us proud and make a hackintosh out of one of them. Good boy! So clever!

They don't want an overhaul. What they are really tweeting about is that they want Apple to lower the floor on laptop prices. They almost all want MacOS X and a keyboard/mouse with the thing too (either as an attachment or in a clamshell format).

It is multiple products being discussed.
Those folks are going to be tweaked because the laptop prices are going to remain exactly the same. Want a laptop... minimally pony up $1000. That's the root issue of what the moans are about. It is very likely to become the 2010 version of the "PowerBook G5 is coming real soon now" issue of years gone by. In short it completely misses the major points and reality of where Apple is going.

As usual people miss the point. They are not asking for literally Mac OSX on the device. They are asking for Mac OSX to be redesigned from the ground up to take advantage of multitouch. That is a revolution. An expensive tablet running a phone OS and being locked into the App Store with a data plan is not a revolution.

Oh yes, for the record I would have been willing to spend $2,000 on a device like this.

I've been saying that this is what OS 11 will be. I think we will see OSX mobile 4 now, OSX desktop 10.7 later this year, OS X mobile 5 next year, with each iteration getting more and more similar to one another, and then in 2012 it will be one OS.

That would result in either a wimpy OS for computers or a bloated OS for iPhone/Tablet. I don't see a "one size fits all" OS in 2012. Now there may come a time near the end of the decade where computer OSes become obsolete altogether because of "the cloud," but 2012 is way too soon. 100% cloud computing depends on a vast wireless network. That is only just starting to get built.

There is no way Steve approved that announcement; and if anyone thinks he did better have a damn good explanation as to why.

One reason: so the moaners who are going to bitch for 10-15 pages about iPhoneOS can get it all out of there system before the announcement.

There was ZERO new content here that had not been leaked previously over the last 3 months. Zip, nada , none. The only thing this trims off is that misguides advocates for what the tablet/slate/iPad is not.

it is not primarily another phone.
it is not primarily a multivendor iPhone selling agreement. (so ridiculous)
it is not a MacOS X laptop.
it is not purely a e-book reader
it is not a B&W screen.

and most important

it is not some overhype normal product upgrade announcement.

It burns call that cruft to the ground so that can clear the way to talk about what it is as opposed to what it is not.

This is the perfect time to leak that. Previously that confusion built hype and buzz. It also helped mask any moves that Apple might be making because there was some much crap out there that many couldn't tell which direction it was going.

Now however, time to start knocking down the crap. Folks still don't know how much it costs , what exactly it does or why it is better, all the real meat here is still left for Jobs to do on stage.

It wasn't like he was going to stand there for 45 minutes and then yell "surprise". Most of the presentation here , minus some we are doing "super great" preamble , is going to be about the device.

I had hoped that Dashboard would be replaced by this new "iPhone OS 4" so I could use my content on my MacBook.

If it's not, it will be like the original release of the AppleTV. One lone man clapping in the hall. A interesting toy for people. Of course I may be wrong, and the demo is amazing. I'm really prepared to be underwhelmed though. If you need "pre-release" drumming of excitement, the punchline must not have been very good.

Erik has an effect on getting men to spill their guts. He was trying to impress her. I'm surprised he didn't start blurbing insider secrets about his own company.

I'd just like to say that I think it's hilarious that I'd never seen anyone even mention a "controlled leak" on this website before that write-up on Mac Observer about the Wall Street Journal article -- and now everyone's throwing around the term as though it's oh-so-obvious to them (but no one else).

I'm not saying it is or it isn't -- just an observation.

It's equally possible that you simply pay more attention to people saying controlled leak now (or a mixture of both I suppose). It's not like they came up with the concept. The whole point of being secretive is not to limit information, but control it... it always has been that way.

iPhone OS = NO BUY.

Totally agree. This is going to be another flash-on-the-iPhone debacle. Tomorrow will be day one of people calling for OS X to be on the tablet, hacks to put OS X on the tablet, people refusing to buy cos it doesn't have OS X and Windows people saying "My tablet has a real OS instead of one designed for a phone".

If it has anything less than OS X then Apple are doing the job by half.

I suppose you'll just have to buy another brand of tablet which includes a full version of Windows 7 then...

Yes, but did you see the dancing bear? :D

I'm hoping my current iPod Touch apps will work on the tablet, whether through updates by the developers or via some kind of emulation mode.

Why not ? Dont you remember Minority Report ?
Pretty damn awesome os he had, with the glove. However, it was very simple. I could see iPhone os on my mac...

The avergae user need email, word processor, games. The iPhone does all that. Imagine that os on a full-size computer. Simple, yet powerful.

Proof that this was a controlled leak:

Before he's even asked about the Apple tablet, the text at the bottom says "McGraw: Expect a McGraw-Hill E-book for the College Mkt. on an Apple Tablet". This means is was a pre-written, pre-approved talking point for this interview. He didn't just accidentally leak something on the fly.

Flash Flash Flash

I swear, if they put out another effing product that doesn't have flash enabled Safari on it I'm going to lose it...

No flash on the iPhone - ok, w/e, Hulu would probably suck anyway but, holy cow, that's got to be one of the main points of this stupid thing is to be able to watch TV on the go and you absolutely, positively have to have Flash if you're going to do that...

BTW - chick is hot... He probably didn't want to say anything but thought if he let slip on the Apple news he'd get some ;)

If there's anything that I'm certain about on the tablet it's this: I can promise you that there will be no Flash on the God Tablet.

amazing that he feels he can make an announcement like that. Wouldn't he be on some sort of NDA?
Unless Apple has commissioned him to say it for some reason...

He sounds like someone who really doesn't quite understand what he's talking about, but he's been briefed and is sold on the idea. The importance of not saying anything probably isn't front of his mind at all.

Oh boy, he is going to learn why he shouldn't have necessarily done that.

Perhaps. Some have said it's a controlled leak - I don't think Apple needs a controlled leak at the moment, so I don't believe that. But I wonder what they can do. Apple wants the deals so it can't set all terms.

Perhaps McGraw will be asked not to demonstrate tomorrow and it'll be handed to a competitor (if they're ready!?). Perhaps there's a financial penalty built into the NDA and they'll make 30% less for the first year?

You guys are hilarious. A "controlled leak", yeah right.

Terry McGraw is the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, not to mention the fact that the company has his name on it, as it did his father and grandfather, etc. etc.

The guy simply wanted to sound like he knew what he was talking about, and probably should have left it with "it will be terrific".

Man, talk about a feed frenzy.
