Well, for one, file management...

Umm, the iPhone OS does have a file system. What makes you think a more general purpose tablet wouldn't add a file management app that lets you copy files back and forth, save your attachments, etc and view them with your local apps?

The only restriction for apps in the current OS is you cant access a different folder than the one an app is installed in... but thats a security model limitation; that could easily change to allow a Documents folder or what not.

BURN.......! He's going to be slapped by SJ ..

Not likely, Apple is so beholden to the media companies these days that Steve probably does their dishes and laundry to try and get media for Apple's devices.

What is well-timed about "leaking" it less than 24 hours before it's formally announced?

Well for one thing what exactly was "leaked" that the internet didn't already highly suspect ? Reading books ? Nobody knew about that ? HA!

That and the fact that it was leaked around the same time that people will actually see it tomorrow. On CNBC. You remember them ? The channel that almost ALWAYS has an interview with Jobs after a major announcement.

I can almost guarantee you they have a scheduled interview with him tomorrow.

That would be the *former* CEO of McGraw-Hill. After Stevie hears about this, I'm guessing that company won't be as much of a friend of Apple anymore.

Yes, and we'll all be flying in 787's one day - I don't care about the future unless of course Apple is planning on waiting to release the iPad until Hulu is going to do HTML5 or QT but I've got a hunch they won't since NBC and Apple never seem to get along these days.

This isn't about being "backward" compatible - this is about being currently compatible. No Flash = no deal (yes, it's that big of a deal - it's a computer if you'll remember, not a phone).

No, it's really NOT that big a deal. Youtube already works fine on the iPhone OS and Hulu is only a US concern. More to the point, and I'm getting so bored of people not getting this, Flash would kill battery life on any mobile device less than a full-fledged notebook and it wouldn't be Adobe getting the blame for that. Far better to keep it (and the attack vectors it can enable) far away from the iPhone OS. If it's THAT big a deal to you you're probably better off with a laptop anyway to be frank. The tablet isn't going to be for everyone (what product every is?) and I suspect it really won't be for the geeks. If you're not happy with that there are other options but if I'm right and it's a consumer device it's really not a big deal for that market.

Totally agree. This is going to be another flash-on-the-iPhone debacle. Tomorrow will be day one of people calling for OS X to be on the tablet, hacks to put OS X on the tablet, people refusing to buy cos it doesn't have OS X and Windows people saying "My tablet has a real OS instead of one designed for a phone".

If it has anything less than OS X then Apple are doing the job by half.

Man, it has been a while since of I have posted. But I had to log in again and slap a little reality into some folks

"Flash-iphone-debacable" Thank god you are no where near being employed by Apple. The iPhone was the killer mobile phone of the last 3 years. All without flash.

As for the "iPhone OS = NO BUY" Again, are you high! Do you know why all the PC tablets failed .. because they ran a desktop OS on a tablet. The iPhone OS is perfect foundation for a touch-tablet interface.

Not to flame, but comments like these are really short sighted. I feel like I'm reading posts from when the iPod was first announced. "NO way that POS will ever succeed".

Dumb.

Not very good with the press is he. Wow, I am sure he is going to get dinged on that one and not be in the next Apple meeting. Ouch...

i think people are over reacting to the iphone os comment. wait until you see it before you complain.

I doubt the tablet will simply be an oversized iPod Touch/iPhone if it is actually the greatest thing Steve Jobs has ever done.;)

Why would anyone want to use an OS designed for a keyboard and mouse on a touch-based interface device?

What does anyone really believe they won't be able to do using an Iphone-like OS?

Root Access
Installation of XBMC

Yes, these things will come around like they did on the AppleTV, but just the idea of ~another~ locked system really has me bugged.

oh darn, then be bugged and buy someone's used snot rag
you don't need to buy things made by Apple if they don't meet your needs

Controlled leak, there was an easy tell for all you poker players

The reporter asked him VERY casually as if it were planned and he replied without a blink of hesitation. I think this was done for the kindle masses/would be buyers who don't know about Apple's tablet (Mom/Dad/cave dwellers). To make them say "Apple is releasing a Kindle like device? Better check it out before jumping to Kindle"

I agree we shouldn't jump down Apple's throat if it runs iPhone OS instead of true OSX. The platform is very mature imo with many advantages.

Grab some popcorn tomorrow.

Well, for one, file management...

Why would you want to?

No, seriously, why in this day and age are we worried about file management? Let the applications take care of it, just decide what you want to call your file and have done with it. We've got spotlight that indexes the entire device, small focused applications which can simply store their data type in a subfolder without you even knowing and file management applications like iTunes that can handle shoving all this stuff about the place without any manual user involvement.

Again, the geeks amongst us (which, let's be honest, is most of us reading this forum) will always have a use for $FileManagerOfChoice but for the majority of people? Nah, time to move on.

Why do people who read iphone OS automatically assume there isn't a major overhaul with 4.0?

They don't want an overhaul. What they are really tweeting about is that they want Apple to lower the floor on laptop prices. They almost all want MacOS X and a keyboard/mouse with the thing too (either as an attachment or in a clamshell format).

It is multiple products being discussed.
Those folks are going to be tweaked because the laptop prices are going to remain exactly the same. Want a laptop... minimally pony up $1000. That's the root issue of what the moans are about. It is very likely to become the 2010 version of the "PowerBook G5 is coming real soon now" issue of years gone by. In short it completely misses the major points and reality of where Apple is going.

I would also expect a Mac OS X tablet to be more expensive than an iPhone OS tablet.

And as others have stated… iPhone OS on the tablet most likely won't be the iPhone OS you see in the iPhone and iPod touch right now. For a long time (at least 1.5 years I think), I've been predicting (and wanting) mobile iLife/iWork, multi-tasking, more editing (content creation) capabilities, possibly more ports, and a general "extension" of the iPhone OS.

Flash Flash Flash

I swear, if they put out another effing product that doesn't have flash enabled Safari on it I'm going to lose it...

No flash on the iPhone - ok, w/e, Hulu would probably suck anyway but, holy cow, that's got to be one of the main points of this stupid thing is to be able to watch TV on the go and you absolutely, positively have to have Flash if you're going to do that...

BTW - chick is hot... He probably didn't want to say anything but thought if he let slip on the Apple news he'd get some ;)

Who cares, Flash sucks in every way. One more piece of Adobe bloatware.

Yes, these things will come around like they did on the AppleTV, but just the idea of ~another~ locked system really has me bugged.

The vast majority of people couldn't tell a locked system from an open system, and the lack of security horror stories on iPhones is evidence that it's a good approach.

You could always wait for the jailbreaks to surface, but just remember to change the root password, or you could end up with Rick Astley grinning back at you in a comely fashion...
