Of course it's going to be iphone OS based. Come on people! The idea was to take advantage of the APPLICATIONS and make the App store even bigger with larger lead over nearest competitor.

You didn't think Apple is going to develop a completely NEW OS just for the tablet did u? The tablet is a MOBILE device! 4.0 may just surprise us with it's features.

Welcome to Mac Rumors. This is tradition before a big Apple Event. Come back tomorrow around 3pm eastern for the Kvetch Fest. And then in late Feb for the "I'm in line" and "FedEx just shipped mine" fest.
Oh so true.

I agree

It seems to be another Apple restricted revenue stream, another gizmo! I will still hope, against odds, that tomorrow when it is announced there will be some sort of portal to real computing via the cloud or remote access to my home Mac....or something to make this more than a media consumption toy. This means bluetooth to external keyboard and mouse. But I am not holding my breath anymore...

I still assume that it will be 1280 x 800 resolution.

I could not agree more!!!!

The more apple tries to put their paws in everything it sees, the more displeased I am.

That means $1 more dollar R&D put into making a better "page flip" animation and interaction for yuppies to play with, when they could have spent it figuring out how to offer a matte option on their laptops. Or jam a i5 into their middle of the road desktop when Dell is putting i7's in their laptops.

This device just sounds so gimmicky... But who knows? I could be blown away!

For the love of christ, what is the big deal? Everybody knows a tablet is coming tomorrow. Right, this guy stole Steve Jobs thunder. People are acting as though he showed up for interview with the tablet in hand.

As usual people miss the point. They are not asking for literally Mac OSX on the device. They are asking for Mac OSX to be redesigned from the ground up to take advantage of multitouch.

Mac OSX from the group up as multouch *IS* iPhoneOS. What do you think it is? They largely replaced Cocoa with CocoaTouch. The foundations of the interface as primarily exactly the same. You are just talking about the GUI layer, not the OS.

Furthermore, there are fundalmental design disconnections between a precision pointer GUI and a big stubby finger GUI. On iPhoneOS there is almost never a cursor on the screen. In Mac OSX there is always a cursor on the screen. You can't just chuck that out. That aspect is interwined in all of the software.

Mac OSX can do evolutionary stuff. Folks who want revolution have to start over. [ and actually iPhoneOS and touch aren't even revolutionary. ]

That is a revolution.

apple doesn't do revolutions. They do evolutions (and fanboys claim they are revolutions. )

Simiarly the number of intuitive gestures that are applicable and common across all applications is relatively small. Questionable if want to burn all of your applications to the ground that have sophisticated usages to do that.

Slapping multitouch onto everyones app doesn't solve any prinicple problems that people have across applications.

Oh yes, for the record I would have been willing to spend $2,000 on a device like this.

So you already own a Wacom Cintiq ?

If you want a big touchscreen on a mac it has been done already. Been on the market for couple years at this point.

Some have said it's a controlled leak - I don't think Apple needs a controlled leak at the moment, so I don't believe that.

Leaks are used for many reasons. By letting out that it's iPhone based people go into the event not expecting a computer tablet, but a true media table. That helps lower expectations. There is nothing more dangerous than raising expectations too high, and they were getting kind of out of hand.

Are those the only two choices? :p

What are the odds?

So what are the odds that this tablet will be on sale tomorrow following the big announcement? Will we be able to purchase it right away or at the end of the month. I hope there is not a long delay.

buy

So lets assume it IS just a big iphone/book reader. Lets just assume that this tabloid will be great for students to use in school. Which of you will buy it?

I'm sure there are far more potential buyers who are not students, and couldn't care less about textbooks, so there must be more to it than that.

Calling this a "well-timed" leak is a bit silly, IMHO. The "tablet event" is less than 24 hours away. How is this "well-timed?"

Secondly, I doubt I'm going to buy a tablet anyway, as I'm in the market for a laptop/new computer, and I already have an iPhone, but I hope this device does WAY more than read magazines and textbooks. Based on this "leak," this device does not interest me at all, and I'm even in college.

meh, not a big deal. nothing that we didn't already know. more than the actual device itself, i think steve is going to make a big deal about all the exclusive content that's being readied for this device. all the publishers, especially.

if all goes according to jobs' plan, the tablet will do for publishers what the ipod did for the music business. yes, the music companies aren't thrilled with some of what transpired from the itunes agreements, but they sold a lot more music than they otherwise would have.

i don't know if this will indeed be the panacea for publishers that they are hoping, but it's still exciting.

Since the devs haven't yet seen the OS, I'd say you're talking at least a 6-week wait.
