I don't understand why they're all happy with the adapters (male to female) when we could have a single MALE to MALE cable, if only the companies would produce it.

What's the advantage of an adapter over a single cable? Obviously you won't use the HDMI male to male cable for any other purpose than connecting the MBP so it doesnt make sense to produce adapters instead of cables.

Am I wrong?

In my case I have several TV's with HDMI inputs in my house. In my living room I have an Onkyo receiver I use for the audio portion and it handles all the HDMI switching. I don't want to be fiddling around behind my receiver/TV everytime I want to plug something in so I leave an HDMI cable running from TV (or Receiver depening on which room it is) to an empty spot in my home theatre. I can then plug in my PS3, 360, or a PC to this cable.

An adapter allows me to plug my mac into that same cable. A seperate male-male cable would require me to get behind the TV everytime I wanted to plug my mac in to a TV.

Also, I can't find any of the adapters that support Audio/Video in stock ANYWHERE. Particularly the Griffin adapter. :(

I purchased the Griffin mDP to HDMI along with my new MBP and recieved this adapter this afternoon. Unfortunately I have to wait until next week to try it out but will confirm here right away.

DTS-HD, TrueHD mini-display port to HDMI Griffen

Hi all,

I've got the 17" MBP i7-620M GeForce GT 330M w/8 GB (Mid 2010)

I'm attempting to bitstream Blu-ray HD Audio (DTS-HD & TrueHD) via the Griffen MDP-HDMI 1.3 adapter in Win7 with Boot Camp 3.1. When I plug in the adapter and power on my Denon AVR, the Nvidia HDMI driver kicks in. After configuring the basics, it would appear that the Cirrus logic chip (CS4206a) is controlling the PVAP (Protected Video Audio Path) in Intel's on-board HD Audio. It doesn't seem that the Nvidia driver is able to recognize the PVAP. I modded the latest Nvidia driver 197.16 and successfully installed it along with the latest HD audio driver, however it doesn't make any difference. The MDP & Griffen adapter are both capable of bitstreamming HD Audi/Video.

Given the HM55 chipset along with the i7-620M with on-board HD Video & Audio the PVAP is incorporated which should allow bitstreamming.

Anyone know the specifics on the audio paths? It would be a shame if Apple hasn't utilized the PVAP properties.

Any ideas out there?

I think the problem is that the Nvidia automatically kicks in when you connect something to the mDP port. IIRC they don't have support for PVAP required by DTS-MA and TrueHD. I could be wrong though.

Were you able to get non-HD 5.1/7.1 codecs to play through your receiver in windows? I'd really be interested to see if it can at least output 5.1 DTS that's common in many MKVs.

Yes 5.1 Dolby & DTS both stream without issue in OSX with DVD Player.

RE:Nvidia, according to their website the 330M does support DTS-HD & TrueHD "if" certain criteria is met such as the HM55 chipset coupled with the i7-620M with it's on-board HD graphics & audio.

I'm not sure that the on-board graphics & audio is being recognized with the boot camp 3.1 drivers because it doesn't show up in the device manager. Anyway to detect or locate it within windows?

Hmm, interesting. I'm guessing that you may be right and it may be a driver issue. I'm not sure. It's great to hear that Dolby and DTS work under OSX, but what about Windows?

I've used the USB+mdp to hdmi on pre april mbps and it works great with no hassles. Just pick USB audio out and enjoy.

I purchased one of each I could find with my new i7, have posted my results in my thread.

Dr. Bott works audio+video, ~30 but had to pay tax and shipping so expect all solutions to be around the 40 dollar US mark

the usb+mini display outs work only for immediate source (ie if you run hdmi to your tv, sound will come out of tv, not our of digital out to your receiver) (used monoprice's here)

monoprice standard $9 adaptor is not vesa 1.2 approved and does not have audio out

griffin's mini display to hdmi is vesa 1.2 and has video + audio YES CONFIRMED, they doubled their price in the last 48 hours from 20 to 40 dollars, this is also the 3rd party adaptor sold on apple store, I got from griffin direct to avoid tax and free shipping plus they have them in stock

Well the Griffin adapter I bought was lost in the mail/mis-delivered . Local MicroCenter had an Altona AT13026 that Altona states on its website supports audio out and is VESA 1.1a compliant as Apple says is required but I get no audio. In the sound control panel I only have Internal.

I'm assuming audio is either plug n' play or switchable in the control panel. Anyone tried this brand/model out? Wondering if some creep did a switch-a-roo with the older model.

This Adapter integrates Mini DisplayPort video signal and audio signal from USB port into HDMI output. It solves the problem that Mini DisplayPort of MacBook can only transmit video signal but no audio.

Ugh, the entire point of streaming through HDMI is that you can stream 7.1 channels in real time, like for games, or aac 5.1 content. If you're streaming through USB or optical, then you're really only streaming stereo PCM, which can carry a 5.1 DTS signal. Plex uses this to transcode 5.1 into DTS, while DVD player and I'm guessing Bluray simply stream ac3 through the port. The only way the system itself handles surround sound is it you have a dedicated sound card, or stream through HDMI, like my 4890 does in windows.

If / when anyone gets the actual streaming through HDMI, can they tell me if it lets you run 7.1 or 5.1 through Audio Midi Setup?

It's a relatively small market and to try and guess how many of each length would need to be produced would be silly. I cannot see one good reason for doing this the way you suggest from a business point of view. Just producing the adapter seems the sensible thing to do.

Still I'd like to find the cable instead of the adapter. I'm sure many others mac user would do the same. I'll wait a couple of weeks and after that if still they havent upgraded the cables I'll buy the adapter.

Agreed. I often times bring my laptop with me when I visit family to watch movies. Both my siblings and parents have their TV's mounted to the wall with the cables hidden inside walls. It's great to have this adapter instead of a 6-foot cable in my bag and it is really nice to not have to get behind those screens.

It seems Apple's page stating 1.1a is required is mistaken, and 2.0 is actually required.

I don't know if this has already been pointed out, or if its even true, but when I bought my 13' MBP I was told that the 13' does NOT support sound through minidisplay-port, only 15 and 17'.

Is this true? and if so, why the f*** is it so?

peace

The apple store displays the same "HDMI output" for the 13" as it does for the other size.

Apple store employees don't know what they're talking about, half the time...

haha, in this case I really hope so!

It would be a weird thing to disable- there are already plenty of excuses to step up to the 15", if you are so inclined.
I wanted to get the 15", actually, but I convinced myself I shouldn't spend most of my measly college fund on a laptop that I don't strictly need *shrugs*

I JUST bought the Frys one posted earlier. About to test it and see if it does do video AND sound. :)

EDIT: It DOES work as suggested before. Thanks!!!!!

Just noticed that OWC has a VESA 1.2 adapter in stock and on sale for $19 + $2 shipping. They state it will pass audio for the 2010 MBPs. Since they specialize in Mac & have bought from them many times I felt like it was a decent gamble on my part.

Here is the product link

I will post results when I get it... assuming this one isn't mis-delivered too

I dont know if youve ever heard of dealextreme.com, but they have at least 3 MDP --> HDMI adapters ranging from $11 to $18

www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.34025
www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.27549

The reviews are all from before the 13th, so all of those people have the "older" MBP's.

Yes, its a legit website, and no, im not trying to advertise...

But I really Dont know anything about AV equipment..

Perhaps a stupid question, but doesn't the MDP to HDMI on AppleStore work with audio?

1) Dealextreme -- those are older 1.1a versions that do not support audio, even if they say they do. You need 1.2.

2) Monoprice does not sell any audio pass through cable or adapter (see early posts in this thread)

3) Yes, Apple sells the Griffin adapter but its $40 when most other stores are selling for $25 or so (of course when they have it in stock).
