is there a difference in image quality between any of these adapters? I'd like to go with the cheap ebay one but I don't want to risk losing any quality.

I'm sure they're all made in the same factory in China, just wanted to make sure that there is no advantage to going with the Dr. Bott or griffin unit.

Why don't you all use Plex? It is really awesome, and plays anything, including 1080p 5.1 MKVs. Forget VLC.

And if I want to watch a movie or tv show with subtitles as I do with VLC?? Is there any other program?

Im pretty sure that there must be a way to hear the VLC on the tv. If I use analog audio via usb (hdmi + usb adapter) will I hear VLC on the tv?

that is ridiculous. I mean, mdp is supposed to be used to connect the laptop to an external monitor and the new audio update is supposed to do that with just one cable. That means that when I use the laptop in clamshell mode I'd like to hear ALL the sound on an external source, not just when I play movies. So what's the reason of the update?

addlogix adapter doesnt work

@CFerra. I went to micro center today and bought the addlogix mdp to hdmi adapter and it doesnt work on my 15", i7 macbook pro. I thought maybe it was a bad hdmi cable but then i used the one that was connected to my working tv. ???????????????? Buyer beware, i am going to return tomorrow.

Well surprise, surprise, my Griffin adapter that was heretofore lost showed up at my doorstep this afternoon. Nice to know I have some honest neighbors.

Anyway, another confirmation that the Griffin adapter pushes out glorious audio. Funny how the box doesn't even mention audio or that it's 1.2 compliant. It does have a 2010 copyright stamped on the box. That was the only clue I had that it was current.

Unfortunately, my OWC adapter already shipped so its on the way. I guess I'll test it out for kicks before putting it on craigslist or something.

XBMC. It'll handle just about any file you throw at it, has a wonderful 10' UI, will scrape info into a handy database for you, keep track of what you've watched, and I'm guessing that since it uses mplayer it'll also output sound just fine. I should be getting my new MBP tomorrow and hopefully my cable soon enough so I can test.

So will the Griffin or OWC one work with the 27" iMacs with audio? Both of the product pages seem to claim they do. Then there's that Apple support article that says the late 2009 iMacs MDP supports audio as well.

The only problem is I have yet to hear of any first-hand accounts of anybody actually successfully doing it.

Well I can confirm that there is no audio output on the late-2009 MBPs Mini-DP. I don't own an iMac, so no answer to that question.

(as I have the latest Griffin MDP to HDMI and an MBP manufactured just before the latest revision I thought I would give it a go, just in case...)

Hello folks, I want to know what kind of cable hdmi works with these approved audio capable adapters? Should I buy any hdmi cable or they are all the same?

The adapter a user reported successfully using from Frys is sold out. Neither Apple nor Best Buy carry anything in-store. Is there an adapter from Amazon that has been verified to work with the new MBPs?

i have this one and posted about it earlier in the thread

it is confirmed to work but now amazon is indicating 1-3 weeks shipping.

not sure if that turnaround is in your range.

Thought I would throw in my two cents after reporting the Eforcity adapter not working.

Ordered the Griffin Adapter from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CK8TZ8/ref=oss_product

However looks like they're out of stock. I can confirm it works great! Definitely 5.1 audio, haven't tested anything else...

I hope you're right, man. I just ordered it, it's a great price. You should make a demonstration vid.

Sorry, I don't know how to post videos.

That's the one i got i believe, the image quality is crap though, being fairly non technical i'm at a loss to what to do as my previous vga adaptor for my plastic macbook was far better so i don't know what im doing wrong

At first the image quality on my tv was pretty bad too until I went into system preferences and adjusted the screen resolution to match my tv's native resolution (i.e. 720p, 1080p etc.) and refresh rate. Since the cable is passing a digital signal it will either work or not, digital signals don't have problems with interference or degradation.

the reviews say that it doesn't carry audio

I didn't have audio until I went into sound preference and clicked on the option to output audio to my tv.

Ok i open Displays on Settings, plug it all in, mirror the screen, it's currently on 1080i and has options for 720p and 480p but changing to them messes it all up. It seems 1080i is probably the best setting and my tv does do that as its best as i've used my Xbox 360 on it in the past. Refresh rate is 50 and 60hz, doesn't change anything for me! SO have no idea what to look to change!
