3) Yes, Apple sells the Griffin adapter but its $40 when most other stores are selling for $25 or so (of course when they have it in stock).

Thanks. I live in Denmark, meaning Apple's is cheapest, as I won't have to pay for the delivery.

Okay so the griffin video adapter is the most reliable way to get audio and visual to an HD tv with a 2010 MBP?

It this 100% confirmed by anyone, because I just spend 15$ on the monoprice one which I was told would work before I got my MBP.

Sorry if this comes off as angry, but there is no way that i'm going to be paying 40$ for another adapter which possibly wont work.

Read through this thread. No monoprice cable or adapter supports audio out. This is direct from Monoprice tech support. The Griffin adapter has been reported to work. Apple sells it for $40, which is MSRP. Almost every other company that sells it sells it for much less. I bought from a 3rd party on Amazon for $25 shipped... of course USPS mis-delivered it. Thanks USPS. Problem is now everyone except Apple seems to be sold out of the Griffin adapter.

I ordered a NewerTech adapter from OWC, which specializes in Mac upgrades. They state their adapter does support audio in the new MB/MBPs. It's $21 shipped. I won't be able to confirm it works until I receive it though -- prob Wed.

Has anyone in the UK come across somewhere selling these adapters that meet the 1.2 standard? So far the only ones I've found carry video only.

I'd like to know if one can be bought in the UK too. I have looked but have not found.

addlogix adapter

I went to my local MicroCenter today, nassau county NY, and picked up the addlogix adapter today, confirmed that it works! 17 dollars and full 1080p + multi-channel audio.

For anyone who tried already the audio through HDMI:

I read you have to tell system preferences to output the audio via HDMI. I was wondering if the system remembers the setting the next time you connect the macbook to the external monitor/TV.

If not, does anyone know how to make a shortcut to repeat the same action (go to system preferences and tell the system to output audio over hdmi) quickly?

I guess you need automator, but I'm not that expert in the automator programming.

I didnt have to do anything. All I did was plug it in and play quicktime or youtube or something and it just worked.

One thing I have noticed: VLC doesnt work through a TV. I use quicktime / mplayer and they work.

That's good to know. What about other apps and browsers? For example Safari/Firefox/Chrome w/ Hulu or other flash sites.

Perhaps a stupid question, but doesn't the MDP to HDMI on AppleStore work with audio?

I don't think it does if you mean this one:
http://www.drbott.net/product/9180-MDHK/

In the London Regent Street store Apple have this solution (£70) for the previous generation MDP:

WTF!! Quicktime can't play a lot of videos VLC does.

Are you sure that when you play VLC you can't go in SPreferences and change the output??

That seems ridicolous to me. If should output ALL the audio coming from the computer.

Wait... are you telling me that if I play an AVI or MKV file through VLC, I can't play that on my TV using HDMI?

I tried playing an AVI movie and the sound came out of my MBP and not my TV with the HDMI connected. I have only tested VLC (not working), Quicktime (working), mplayer (working), itunes (working) and firefox on youtube.com (working). I dont know about any other sites / programs aside from those.

here is what i have so far
minidisplay to HDMI ( i use the Griffin one)
VLC DOES NOT WORK both avi or mkv
itunes WORKS
youtube on safari WORKS

if any one figure out how to get VLC work that would awesome cuz have a lot of HD movies all of them are mkv

How is it possible that VLC doesnt work on the tv??? Doesnt make any sense. So I cannot watch movies with subtittles on VLC on the tv?
