The general consensus among the reviews I've read is that, although the video is an improvement over other phones, it is not as good as you would expect 720p HD video to be (there are complaints of signs of compression) and that the EVO does not replace HD point-and-shoot camcorders.

It's a nice phone, but there will be something wrong with it. Every phone so far that HTC has made has had some issues so I am curious what will come out once this phone starts seeing some real world use.

To be fair, no phone is perfect. Every manufacturer and every model has its shortcomings, either in its hardware or in the software. Nevertheless, what HTC has done in the last six months is imply remarkable. No other phone company has released so many high-profile premium devices in the same period.

I find a lot of value in these threads. I've had each version of the iPhone and while just a couple of weeks ago I would have said it's just the "default" that I'll get the new one, I'm starting to question that plan. What people are doing with a more open platform is really starting to take off and Apple just looks ridiculous with their stance.

Flash is still a prime example of the limitations. I run into issues on a regular basis because I can't see Flash content on my iPhone. Some may call it beating a dead horse, but the same can be said for the counter claim in and of itself. "Flash is slow", "it kills your battery", "html5 is the future." Yeah, well guess what? The web we all use today had a heavy dose of Flash sprinkled in and many (I'll even say most) of us want to see it. We don't give a cr*p about Steve's grudge and and simply want it to "just work" like he used to tout.

So, to Badandy and other I say this: If you are happy with your iPhone and aren't interested in comparisons, that's great. If you just stick to the threads that are purely about the iPhone experience, features, etc. you'll be fine. You simply coming to threads like this and whining about them aren't useful to ANYONE and in fact, are against good forum etiquette by not staying on topic (...and yes, a comparison to a non Apple product is on topic).

Grow up and move on.

Good job completely missing my point. Bravo!

I have already pre-ordered mine from radioshack. I am going to try it for 30 days and see hot it goes. I haven't canceled my iPhone ATT plan. I am going to have two phone numbers for at least 30 days.

As of now I know a few downsides for this phone (from reviews, other users):

1. Battery life is terrible
2. HD Video recording is really not so good(even compared with 3GS)!
3. No data/voice at the same time. (Don't tell me it's not the phone but the network etc. Whatever it is it's a problem for me at least.) I know sprint is going to try to implement it but I heard it's only possible for wimax. Anyway I am not going to have wimax in LA, at least for now.

I will have my own review once I get it. If I decided to return it, I will let you know what really did not work out for me...... :)

Engadget's review showed decent battery life I though. A bummer about the video compression though. It seems like it should be able to handle much better video.

My EVO is plugged in right now because the battery has drained almost completely with moderate use. I haven't done any official testing of it, but it says it has been 5 hours since the last charge. I feel like the battery life is worse than my 3g.

Took my first video today as well, and the video looked choppy.

I got the evo and shot my first video with it today. I was not impressed with the choppiness.

The 720p was one of the big selling points for me. I haven't used the 3gs, so I don't know how it compares to that, but I was not impressed with the video recording on the evo.

Anybody that went to the I/O event got one for free. Some of those people placed them on eBay.

Reminds me of back when Mossberg talked about how he had to tweak the iPhone 3G to make it last all day.

Traditionally, the first week or two is a time when the battery is just getting fully cycled, and the new owner is trying out a lot of things.

As I keep repeating, the first thing I do with any new phone, is go find and buy an extended battery. Usually I try to get a Seidio that fits in the same space ... they'll usually last 1/3 longer than the stock battery. So if you could only go five hours before, you can go 6-1/2 hours with the extended. Well worth it and the original becomes a swappable spare.

The EVO stock battery is 1500mAh. No doubt a 1750+ will be available soon that fits in the same space. I hear a 3600 with a larger back will come also. Might be worth the extra heft to some people.

My battery has lasted from about 7am until about 530pm with HEAVY use.. I have Wifi on and 4g off. I cant put the phone down... It was drained to zero in about 10 hours of heavy use. I find that IMPRESSIVE.. when im not so in love with touching it every second I will prolly never have to put it on a charger for the entire day, which is good.

LED notifications FTW!

try it and buy it! seriously do you shop for your own car or ask on a forum of complete strangers? which car Mustang or Vette and why. I swear I almost snapped.

Any cell phone's camera is not going to be as good as a standalone digital camera (well, a relatively recent one, anyway.) If quality is of a concern to you, you'd be well-advised to keep a camera and a phone.

OUCH! The video sucks compared to the 3GS?!?!? Thanks for that info!

wait till June 4. Then make a decision. The iPhone will most likely get 720P Video recording and the front facing camera that the EVO 4g has. I'm in the same boat as you but im pretty sure im gonna wait.

My plan is to pick up the evo preordered on The 4th, then if the iPhone comes out and looks as good or better I'll just bring the evo back. That's the pro Of sprint's 30 day refund.

well with the newest mac rumor iphone might come to sprint. that might just be my answer!

but i wont believe it until i see it

I also am dealing with this decision. My contract is up with At&t, and Im obsessed with the EVO like I was with the first iPhone. The one thing that's holding me back is the fact that there is only 1gb of space for apps (you can't download apps to memory cards at this point). I'm somewhat of an app junkie.

Don't buy the EVO for it's camera.

HTC BLOWS at camera quality.

EVO's "720p" is not impressive at all, compression artifacts all over the place.

Same story with the 8MP camera, weak.

The EVO has auto-focus for the camera for pictures so I would think it would for video as well.

As far as the app problem is concerned with them not being able to be stored on the memory card, one of the features of Froyo is supposed to fix this and HTC has said that Froyo will be available for the EVO sometime "in the second half of this year," so hopefully that will be a non-issue soon.
