What surprises me is how long it is taking the mods to merge this pointless thread with the EVO/Android thread that is 25 pages long.

This is a solid reason for me to drop the iphone. anyone agree?
So you're considering dropping the iPhone for the EVO, because of the camera?

Personally, I'd look how you'll be using the phone and see who the iPhone vs the EVO stack up. Not just one feature of the phone.

Realistically, how often will you be using the video camera.

Don't get me wrong, I like the android OS, but you'll need to ask yourself how does that platform, its apps, and sprint play into my needs. For instance, does sprint have coverage for where you live" Are the apps that you need/want available in some form on the android platform.

Why not wait two weeks and see what the new iPhone will have before making a decision.

I agree with this question. On top of that, your considering dropping the iPhone because of how the camera looks on paper, not the actual camera itself. You hear 8mp and get all excited. Go read/watch the review on engadget or gizmodo and see how the camera performs for yourself. They will show you video and still shots. It is not very impressive.

If the camera is the main selling point for you, why don't you just wait until the iPhone is at least anounced and that way you can do a comparison of the two?

Let me tell you the EVO CRAPS all over the "current" Iphone and will surely best the new one if not just for purely HTC Sense + Android 2.1(Soon 2.2).

Its not even close... I have the evo and its not even a contest.

Well after snooping around it's going to take one hell of a show at WWDC to keep me with iPhone. 4.0 isn't the update I thought it would be and the new hardware seems like it's just trying to match the competition instead of trying to outgun (like Incredible and EVO).

I can't stop thinking about trying this phone out for 30 days and how it competes with my 3G. Specs are no comparison but it's more than that. IF the 3G coverage is as good or better than what I have now and if battery life is equal, I'm sold. Android Market still has some catching up to do, that's one plus iPhone has going for it...And iTunes syncing. But I'll buy an iPod touch for that.

Thanks for the info, making my decision even harder, lol.

Maybe give a little more information about what aspects the EVO really excels over the iPhone besides the obvious hardware improvements? Just stating that it "CRAPS" all over the iPhone isn't really a helpful comment.

Sure...

Outside of the obvious specs the build quality it top notch, the feel in your hands and your pockets is great due to it thinness.

The screen is brighter and more readable in direct sunlight than my nexus.. and it about 2 brightness level brighter than my friends 3gs.

Just everything that is better on android and the features that android has vs iOS

I find the camera on the EVO to be better than the iphone, but the video is compressed too much... I imagine that a software update will fix that in the near future.

Hardware buttons, I mean what would I do without those?? On the Evo they are far more responsive than my nexus one... and I dont have to have screen space eaten up with software back buttons and settings buttons.

Iphone OS is just plain boring compared to any android device BUT ESPECIALLY compared to a android device with Sense... its just no contest.

Sprint coverage in my area is stellar... consistent speeds of around 1mb down 800k up... way faster than my nexus and definately more consistent.

Hotspot works over 3g... I get that feature free for 30 days... connect my ipad to it easy... with wpa2 encryption ZING

The overall experience is wonderful, altho it is still a little choppy when installing apps and trying to do something else at the same time... the phone is heavy... which may be a problem with some.. but I like solid feeling phones.

Great! Thank you for clarifying. I'm sure this will help factor into the OP's decision.

To me, it all comes down to each persons preference of Android vs iPhone OS. The screen size and other hardware features are great, but that's the stuff you get used to after a while. The OS is what is most important. Each person has to go out and use both for a while and see which one fits them best.

I agree Steve, and it sounds like dgree03 may not have an iPhone him/her/self and might have spent more time with the EVO than with the iPhone, so that might be worth considering.

I’d just like to add though, I think it is just as important how well AT&T vs Sprint performs in one’s area. For me, it was primarily AT&T’s horrible service first, and boredom with the iPhone OS / disappointment with the scope of updates second that led me to look elsewhere.

I don't think that can be stressed enough. First and foremost people should use the carrier with better coverage. All these phones are good enough that you'll likely be happy... if you can connect. I actually have better coverage in my area with Sprint, so I'm excited.

I played with the Incredible.

as if incredible is any indication to EVO. The webbrowsing, zooming, maps everything...is choppier than the Iphone OS. I looked long and Probably bother the verizon guy.

The only thing, THE ONLY THING, i like about the android os was the talk to search. Worked awesome on maps.

But there was just a slight studder to everything. EVERYTHING and yes, i killed all my background apps. Seriously, I came into verizon to buy an android phone but came out not really being as impressed.

I was more impressed with verizon's service and coverage. Sprints Customer service was pretty great too.

Sorry google....now I truly know Android is keeping up because of lack of choices. Not because of this "freedom" bullcrap. Like majority of users know really this excluding technies. Baskin Robins may have 31 flavors, but I'll rather take my 10 flavors at haagen dazs

I had the iphone 3gs last year for about 3 months... my buddy still has his but is getting a EVO so I went over to his house to compare and contrast so he could play with both side by side...

One thing we noticed is that EVO speaker phone was louder and just as clear as Iphone..

We also noticed that if my EVO showed one bar we could still make a call and have a conversation.. if his iphone had one bar.. call would fail every time...

Puttin both the evo and Iphone next to each other you REALLY see how bland the iphone os is... its smoothed over look is nice.. but ill take function over form anyday!

EVO- LED notifications with different colors for different event.. but it is not customizable... iphone nothing like that...

EVO- Widgets, Iphone nope

then with android... gmail labeling... cloud computing.. real multitasking... google nav... did i mention widgets? lol its like a god send...

Can you give an honest, non biased comparison regarding battery life. Assuming equal usage and similar tasks, does one or the other stand out as having superior battery life. I would think the iPhone would win here due to the multitasking on the evo, but not sure.

I played with the Incredible at a Verizon store as well and my experience was completely different. Of course I’m used to an EXTREMELY laggy iPhone 3G, but I found the Incredible to be really zippy and everything ran smooth as glass. No choppiness at all. Maybe you were playing with a dud?

Honestly, you know how Phone nerd are with new toys.. they use the heck out of them for the first few days, then get to normal usage.

Well i got the phone on friday afternoon... unboxed and charged it while I was playing with it. On saturday morning I took it off the charger at 8am, used google nav from my house to Downtown LA and back, I did some text messages... browsed alot of sites like engadget, cnn, macrumors etc... talked on it for about 10mins total.. had wifi on the whole entire time but I had 4g off..

When i got home at about 6pm I was at 22%... it was yelling at me to charge it at around 830... so 12 hours with medium usage and about 2 hours of GPS being on... not bad.. oh phone had autobrightness on

The transitions are fine, that's the "zippy" you are talking about. The issue is the zoom and scrolling. If you scroll webpages. It's smooth smooth smooth studder for 1 frame (very fast) and then back to smooth smooth smooth smooth and then studder for 1 frame.

Same for maps, when you pitch in and out, you can notice a slight stutter. It's really short but noticeable. This was done on two verizon phones. You will definitely see this more on the motorola droid but it's I was hoping it was fixed on the snapdragon. You can even see this on the YouTube videos. Watch all the reviews and watch them scroll. You will see the studder.

My two cents

I experienced a little bit of that. Turns out the demo device had so many programs open on it, any phone would stutter. Everyone and their momma had opened apps and the phone probably had not been rebooted in quite some time. There were about 20+ apps running on the demo.

It seems strange to hear people talk about these phones stuttering and stuff when I go on youtube and see them running smooth as butter. I feel like it has to be because they are demo units.

Ever install an iPhone app and have to reboot because of lag? The demo phones constantly get apps downloaded and never get rebooted etc. Demo phones are always hard to get a true impression with.

Have you guys just heard of task killer? When I ran my experiments. ALL RAM was freed up. This isn't a ram isn't. It's a computation issue. I've use the iphone for 3 Years. Its clearly visible. I'm running jailbreak iPhone now with background processes and the measily 256mb of ram. And it scrolled just fine. Also, if your iPhone lags, use download system activity monitor, it will free up ram. You don't need to reboot. REBOOT=FAIL

It's an OS issue. And froyo didn't seem to fix it....as I watched the user posted videos.

But hey it's one man's observation and opinion

Heres a couple of pics that I just took of my EVO and Ipod Touch. Sorry its not an iphone, but the touch is as close to one that i have access too.

Wow these pictures make the evo look HUGE

It's definitely a big phone, yes. Anything bigger than 4.3 inches would be too big. The back is tapered and has a hefty feel to it (6 oz) but it feels good in the hand and is still very pocketable since its so thin. I definitely prefer it to the much cheaper feeling and smaller droid incredible.

It's not the size that matters it's how it feels in your hand.

I do really believe that there will be a lot of returns and non-purchases once the general public actually can hold one due to size. This is ain't a 5'2' petite girls phone because she probably couldn't get her hand around it. It's definitely a BIG MAN'S phone with big hands. :)
