Such a sexy phone. I think I'll go to Best Buy tomorrow and pre order it. I'm going to have to think extremely hard about it though. Sucks to know I just paid for MobileMe and I probably won't end up using it if I get the EVO.

I am really in love/lust/obsessed with the HTC EVO, just like I was with the iPhone in 2007. So much so, that I'm looking into dumping AT&T, and the iPhone to get one. I have a few concerns though (no phone is perfect). Here are my concerns, and maybe someone can answer some questions, or alleviate the concerns.

1)Sprint Network- I left Sprint in 2007 to get an iPhone. At first, the reception blew away Sprint's reception in NYC and Jersey City where I work. I bought the 3G iPhone in 2008, and my service was still great. Since 2009, I can't say that anymore, in Jersey City, I have to turn my phone to Edge just to have a somewhat functional phone. How is Sprint's reception in NY and Jersey City. Obviously I'll have a month to test it out. But from what I've read, Sprint is only behind Verizon in NY.

2) Apps- I'm an app-oholic, I have over 300 apps on my 16gb iPhone 3G. One deal-breaker for me, is that you can't save apps to SD cards on Android 2.1 (I know they said you can in 2.2, but the facts are kinda wishy washy). Also, obviously the Android App store is way behind Apple's, so they are missing some of the main apps I use a lot, like Amazon Kindle app, games (If you haven't played Daredevil Dave, go do it now, so fun), etc. Of course, I could always get a cheap iPod Touch and go that route. I also have almost 5meg of music.

3)Data and Phone at the same time- I'm so used to looking stuff up while on the phone with friends, will I be able to do that on the EVO ? The Sprint Rep in NYC said that NYC doesn't have 4G just yet, and from what I understand, you have to be on 4G to be able to do both at the same time.

4) 65k color screen-Truly not a deal breaker, but why make an iphone-killer phone that can't even match up to the first iphone's color screen capacity ?

I think those are my main concerns. I originally got an iPhone so I don't have to cary several devices around, so an EVO and iPod Touch seems like a dumb move. But if great phone reception and the great features of the EVO make sense, I may just do so.

These are all really valid concerns, so I think you have a tough decision ahead of you.

1) As far as Sprint vs AT&T, I think it really depends specifically on where you work and live. The NYC metro area is such a problematic area for carriers due to all the signal interference (buildings) and high population that results vary with carriers from block to block. Where I work in NYC, there is practically no signal on AT&T and T-mobile, but fairly good on Sprint and Verizon. You’re going to have to ask around your work and see what kind of signal others on Sprint have in your building and in your neighborhood.

2) As far as saving apps on the SD cards are concerned, that also gave me pause, but those who have Android phones insist it is a non-issue and with 1gig of onboard storage you should have all the room you need because Android apps generally don’t take up a lot of space. I have been creating a list at appbrain.com of apps that I am considering loading onto my EVO when I get it, and the total size of the 107 apps I have listed so far is only 85mbs, so it looks like you should be able to install over 500 apps without any problem.

3) Data and Phone at the same time is going to be an issue. As you mentioned, this is only possible when you are connected to 4G, and from what I understand, NYC actually does have 4G at the moment (although it has yet to be officially launched), but reviews have made it clear that the 4G signal doesn’t penetrate buildings well so I wouldn’t expect it to be reliable if I were you.

4) No clue about the screen.

Forgot to add regarding the coverage that when you are on Sprint, you also can roam on Verizon for free if you don’t have a Sprint signal where you are, so that might be something to take into consideration as well.

.

See that's why their games suck so bad. They are so limited on space they can take up. Good iPhone games can range anywhere from 150 megs to a gig. I really hope that FROYO allows a workaround for this, but I have not see it confirmed.

Apple has positioned iPhone/ iPod Touch to be mobile gaming devices; gaming/multimedia is not the priority for Android. I'm a big fan of Android but if you like to play games, get the iPhone or iPod. It's also one reason why I sold my iPhone because the App Store was flooded with games.

I was thinking of switching to android but it just seems like the market is flooded with a new android device every time the wind blows.

Which makes me feel like my device would be outdated alot faster than normal. At least with the iPhone there would be uniform updates for at least 3 or 4 years following each HW revision.

And also i love baseball and i know the MLB at bat app for android cannot broadcast live games like the iPhone version can. That's a big issue for me.

But once the MLB app for android can play live games then i will most likely switch

You still don't get it.

The core player code is all that has to go in internal memory. Those are usually pretty small.

All the massive stuff... graphics, sounds, maps, you name it... can and does go on the SD card.

The upshot is that it's not a real issue.

Yes that is true... again I have never worried about running out of space. Just how many apps do you need on a phone lol. Stop hoarding!

But that is how it works.... How do people think they got Quake III running on Android with such false limitations?

Is it now wrong to correct people when they're spouting inaccuracies?

Kdarling, explain that. So you can only get about 30-40 apps and then your full? That sucks monkey testicles and that's nasty cause those things are hairy!

You kind of answered yourself earlier....

"I really hope that FROYO allows a workaround for this......"

Now we know it does! :p

Your argument for that is just as bad as me saying that I've got under 4GB left with 3 apps installed on my iPhone, which was 8GB to start with.

208 out of 378 was not taken up by 22 apps. They likely only took up less than 20mbs of that. The rest would be taken up by the OS and "other."

The real question is:

Does the Android have anything close to "MY3G" the app where it pretends to be a wifi device so youtube servers will send the higher bitrate date.

Because I just got it on my iphone and its mind boggling awesome

Yes like email, text i would imagine. Also I never said the types of apps I had installed. 22 apps PLUS the stock apps I said in my last post. So in total about 40+ apps.

With Froyo we dont need a app.. its built in. Also on my evo currently I can get youtube HQ. No app needed.

On 3g?

Has it been confirmed as in spotted in the wild that FROYO let's apps save to SD?

I will test it when i get outside... Im not 100% sure.

But I installed Froyo on my nexus and yes it lets you move apps to the sd card with one click. And it will move apps to the SD automatically if the onboard memory is too low.

I have 40 extra apps installed, including Google Earth and Epocrates, and they take up about 55MB.

On the Incredible, that left about 640MB for apps. Even before 2.2, that means I have room for five hundred or more apps. I think I'll be okay ;)

And again: my response was to the claim that large games were not possible. That is absolutely incorrect due to the storage of data on the SD card.

Of course, the iPhone has a 180 visible app limit for the home menu screens. Just as Android is getting 2.2, the iPhone is getting 4.0 and folders.

The iPhone is the only device that has the YouTube limitation. All other smartphones always played full rate over 3G, AFAIK.

This is what I hate about iPhone OS. You need an app or work-around for everything you want to do on the iPhone, it doesn't "just work".
