I shouldn't have to root and custom install ROMs, that's the whole point. I want a phone that works well out of the box.

The same can be said about having to jailbreak an iPhone to add common smartphone functionality.

IMO, device preference comes down to learning and life styles. Whether a person is a visual, auditory or tactile learner. Whether they like doing things one at a time or doing multiple items together. Whether they like lots of choices, or prefer to have choices made for them. Whether they have the time or inclination to learn new ways of doing things, or not. It's all good. We all focus on different things in our life.

For myself, I don't see the iPhone as more "polished". Every day I'm frustrated by its inability to do such a simple thing as being able to go backwards in context, as when an app calls Maps but does not know how to return to the calling app.

Also, I don't see any stuttering on the Incredible that I don't also see under the iPhone OS doing similar background tasks. I wish you could video what you're seeing.

Cheers!

Exactly. The list of things the iPhone could not do without a jailbreak even a year ago were laughable. Simple things like copy/paste, MMS and other things every other smartphone has been doing for 5-6 years. I am a huge Apple guy. Imac, Macbook and iPad but I am sorry, the iPhone feels like 3 steps back in technology compared to Android.

A serious debate on switching to sprint for the Evo.

I have been an iphone user since the first gen. I have a 24 and a 27" iMac as well as an MBA and an iPad. I am a self admitted fanboy. With that said I am seriously considering switching over to the evo on Friday. Anyone else in the same boat? Here are my reasonings.

I can save money going with an HTC Evo and adding mobile Hotspot over going with an iPhone and paying 2 30.00 data plans through AT&T. General breakdown for me goes as follows:

Sprint Family Plan for 2 Evos:
1500 Landline minutes with UNLIMITED any carrier cell 2 cell, Unlimited Data and unlimited Text - 149.99
Mobile Hotspot - 29.99
--------------------------
179.98

AT&T For 2 iPhones:
1800 anytime minutes with unlimited AT&T 2 AT&T usage - 129.98
2 data plans - 60.00
unlimited Text - 40.00
iPad 3G - 30.00
------------------------
249.98

I supprt technology that supports me and it has come to the time that I have to make a decision based on

Evo:

Affordablility - Evo
screen size - Evo
Camera - Evo
Multitasking - Evo for FULL multitasking (thogh jailbreak and viola)
HDMI Out and HD video - Evo
Flash Support - Evo
FM Radio (if you care) - Evo
built in GPS Nav - Evo
mobile Hotspot!!! - Evo
Battery setup - Evo. All i need is an extra Battery.
Carrier Services - Evo with Sprint TV, Nascar, Football, Youtube HD etc..
Network Speeds - Evo is supposed to get 10mb down over 4G. yikes
Built in Turn by Turn Navigation - only Evo offers it

iPhone:

Resolution - iPhone but the 64k colors TFT of the evo looks fine streaming video
Overall Network - iPhone (I think) but with that said 4G should be dropping in my area end of June so Im all good

Toss Up:
Operating System - I am not sure
Storage - iPhone (If you are buying anything over 32 gigs of course
Forward Facing Camera - Guess it depends on what happens Monday Morning
Speed - The Evo in the videos really does seem to be as fast as my iPad.

So looking over my standard comparison list and adding in the monetary factors another thing that comes into play here is that I already have an iPad and quite frankly being that it is a big iPhone in every manner imaginable, and I'm good with that, I think that the correct answer for me is the Evo from Sprint.

Please let me also note here that I will be trying it out for a couple weeks and there is a chance that if completely unsatisfied I can return it for full refund and still go with the iPhone.

Anyone else thinking about this?

I am not being a smart*ss when I say this but you did a good job of answering it yourself. While most of your points are quite valid I look at it like this... I am spending more money but I would rather have the OS and "stability" that is provided with the iPhone. I also think about the app store and how much more is offered on Apple's side of the fence. Some people look at the hardware specs and have the "when you compare, there's no comparison" mentality. Do this (really). Take a look at what you posted, and tell yourself what is more important to you... iPhone OS? Or could you not care less. Would you rather have an 8MP camera and a 4.3 inch screen? It's all down to what doesn't bother you to sacrifice... Good luck.

Im right there with you. I have an appointment to pickup my Evo from Best Buy at 9:30am on Friday. Ive never owned an Android device, but have used my friends a couple of times. I plan on using it a lot this coming weekend and then listening to the Apple announcement come Monday morning.

If the new iPhone impresses me (and it needs a more durable body style, bigger screen with increased resolution, home screen widgets, and an updated notification system), then I will most likely return the Evo.

If the iPhone announcement doesnt include all of these wants then I will probably stick with Android for 1 year and come back when Apple truly releases an upgraded phone.

The real nice thing is the fact that Sprint offers a 30 day no hassle return with the Evo. It really cannot hurt to try it out. Good luck with your decision.

Good point and thanks for the response. I think for me it is really hard to get passed the initial shock of the difference in pricing. Then when I add to that the hardware specs and the fact that I already have an iPad with the exact same os as the iPhone I guess you ar right that I have already answered my own questions. I was merely posting this in case I was incorrect or missing something.

I havenever wanted to change to another supposed iPhone killer like the g1 or the pre or the nexus or the blackberry but the difference here is that it actually, for the first time, seems to be a better phone!

I'd really like an Evo. I can't justify spending $175 on an ETF than $200 on the Evo.

Now, if I can somehow get out of my AT&T contract without paying the ETF... I'm onboard. I like Android, the Evo seems like it has some nice hardware, and the Hotspot feature sounds great. On top of all of that, it'd be less expensive then my iPhone plan on AT&T for more features!

This thread should get consolidated into the already created thread, though.

My bad i didn't see the other thread.

I just don't like the Android OS can do... The only things I REALLY like about the phone is the Camera Quality and Screen really.

I'm also getting the Evo this Friday after being a long Iphone owner. I would like to try something new, and see if I can get on board with Android. If the new Iphone is awesome, or if I just can't get into an Android device, I'll return it and go back to a new Iphone. As other people have said on this post, you just can't go wrong with Sprints 30 day return policy.

true, but the only issue with going that route is that you will not be able to port your number over to sprint. if you don't care about keeping your number then its a win win situation.

Your not even going wait until iPhone 4 comes out just to SEE?

I wish this debate was more about us consumer's pushing carrier's and companies to make better products for us. Yes, I am buying an evo on Friday, but it already has faults, and htc and my beloved sprint have their growing pains as well.

That's not correct. He can port his number when and if he decides to keep the EVO. You don't have to port it right away. Of course you are paying 2 phone bill in the interim.

I suppose everyone has seen the new ATT data plan. But what really stood out was that only 2-4% of their users were the bandwidth hogs that were causing everyone to complain about ATT's service.

I have no doubt when the Evo is released we will see the same complaints about Sprint's service as their bandwidth gets overwhelmed overnight. I don't think they are even close to being able to handle the massive amount of data coming their way. If ATT, as huge as they were, had problems with all the iphones when they first came out, you just know there is going to be severe headaches on the horizon from Evo users.

For me, Sprint is out of the question because here, in the state capital of Louisiana, they only offer basic standard phone service. We don't even rate 3G, so it will be a long time in the future before we see 4G from them. I'll have a nice grin on my face while using my iphone to read the headline news on Drudge Report of all the complaints.

How do you do that if you're already assigned a number from sprint and the account is activated?

Edit: I'm asking, I'm not trying to say that you're wrong.

As far as I know, any account you start up on a different carrier requires some time to port the number over to the new account, carrier. In the interim you have a phone new number available to be called while the porting is in progress. So in essence, you're already assigned a new number when the carrier account is activated, it is just quickly replaced with your ported number. I imagine the same is done within the 30-day period if you choose to stay.
