LOL Iphone 4 vs EVO http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/ this makes the EVO look like a purchase for me. Come tomorrow I'm getting me an EVO.

Awww, look at the little baby iPhone. Its so tiny and cute!

I did watch the videos. Engadget seems to think that the quality is the same and they've held the two. The EVO has a higher res front facing camera as well which is usable over 3G/4G. Not just wifi.

I know plenty of people with Android phones that are not having "miserable" experiences. And that includes both my parents, in their 50's and my little brother who is not a techie by any means. My parents have the Moment and my brother has the Hero.

Now to my opinions...

iPhone 4 and the EVO 4G are on par with each other. The only real differences are the screens and the operating systems. iPhone 4 has higher res, EVO has larger size. Totally a preference. Nobody is going to care about the mega pixels on the cameras, little differences in ram/proc speed or an extra sensor that is not a part of the average users vocabulary (yes I know what it is).

It's really going to come down to the network and the OS. You like Sprint and have 4G coverage? Cool. You prefer At&t? Cool. You like Android? Cool. You like iOS? Cool.

So that's it. Both phones are cool.

You forgot one of the most important qualities to look for in a good mobile phone; BATTERY LIFE

You forgot one of the most important qualities to look for in a good mobile phone; BATTERY LIFE

Swap a 2000mah in the Evo and you are good to go! Heck, buy two and then swap the other in while the main one charges. Try doing that with your iPhone :) I have the 1800mah and get great battery life :D

How tight are your pants? The Evo fits in mine just fine :) Screen doesnt compare? I am sorry but a 960x640 display is wasted on a screen thats only 3.5 inches. Thats like buying a 19 inch 1080 HDTV. I would MUCH rather have a screen 8 inches bigger and 800x480 isnt much lower res. Android isnt as well polished because its newer but 2.2 is awesome and the appeal of Android is its widgets and customization. You will never ask to see anyones iPhone because guess what? They all look the same! Boring black background with button icons you press to get to a program. Oh, and you can only download apps that your daddy Mr. Jobs feels you should have, no thanks. Its not just a removable battery, its the ability to swap in a larger capacity one like I did. Not to mention the ability to swap in more memory as well.

If you buy a 19" 1080p display, you don't hold it 10 inches from your face.
The 800x480 display in the Evo is a faux display, with 1/3 of it's pixels missing.
Can't speak for the OS
Why would you be asking for someone's phone JUST TO SEE THEIR PRETTY COLOURS? You'd be asking to play their apps, duh. And the background isn't black anymore.
Walled garden, grass still pretty green from inside.
Battery, well mine's still going fantastic from almost 2 years.
External storage, not arguing that.

I, for one, have never had the need to replace my iphone 3G or 3Gs batteries. But, if that what get's you aroused, more power to ya!

Safe to know i can still video chat on 3G ;)

haha yeah i saw that Evo issue...hopefully a firmware fix seeing its the same exact wifi adapter thats in the Incredible (which doesn't share this issue).

I'm sure I'll be able to video chat on 3g as well using 3Gunrestrictor. None of my wifi-only apps are restricted to 3g. Not one. No problems there. Video chat is not really a priority for me, anyway.

hands down, iphone wins, polish vs POS

was going to switch to EVO, but after last week of reviews of EVO and now the Iphone unveiling, NO WAY

So you let reviews from other people dictate your life and make your decisions? Thats pretty sad.

Been testing EVO 4G for the last 5 days.. So I want to give some input

I currently have Verizon and looking to switch back to AT&T or keep this EVO 4G. I base out of the Lehigh Valley PA area, and did some traveling this weekend with my Verizon Droid and the EVO 4G. I had gone this route many times with AT&T so I dont really need the iPhones comparison again...

Basically the coverage for Sprint was about the same as Verizon. I took a trip down to Lancaster for the weekend which deals with a lot of cornfields and middle of nowhere travel. Each phone had 3-4 signals of 3G and were able to keep track of my trip via the GPS software built in. iPhone on this trip would run into areas of Edge coverage for extended periods of time, but still maintained coverage. I guess it depends where you live, but anywhere I go, Verizon and Sprint take the cake since they maintain 3G. Everyone has different travel habits, but for me, AT&T doesn't cut it. I used to be a Sprint hater, so I will gladly eat my crow. I was wrong.

Around my house I get 4-5 bars of 3G at all times with both Verizon and Sprint. AT&T also gets around this, and has far better building penetration than either of the EVDO networks. Basement bars will get a lot more bars of AT&T than Sprint or Verizon. I guess maybe its GSM vs EVDO here?

Anyways... Impressions of the EVO 4G:

The screen: Huge... Simply huge. After using it for a few days, it was really difficult to head back to my droid. It made the 3.7 inch Droid seem too narrow and cramped. I guess it spoiled me a bit and made switching back a pain in the butt. The screen is also very accurate with color (little on the cooler side of the spectrum) than the incredible (which I hated) and is very bright and clear. iPhone 4's screen looks great, but can we actually SEE the extra pixels? Seems kinda far fetched... Your eye can only see so much. Ill have to see this in person so Ill keep my mind open to this. Ill be sure to hit up AT&T on the 24th to check it out before my 30 days with sprint are up. Seems this style screen would be better suited for a larger surface area like the EVO?

Speed: The phone is a speed demon. Flat out it runs very well, even without the 2.2 Froyo update. Little to no load time on anything really, and screen switching is very smooth. iPhones are also very smooth but lack widgets which are basically loading data in the background.

Camera: The EVO camera is nothing short of brilliant. I have not seen the iPhone 4 camera obviously, but it would be hard to imagine it being better. I have not used the front camera because Qik isnt setup on my phone :p. Given the keynote, I am really excited to see what the iPhones camera can do in the real world. I tend to take a lot of pictures so this would be a push towards AT&T.

Operating system: Played around with both 2.1 and 2.2 and also iPhone 4OS. To be honest they are a personal preference. Android has far more options (obviously) and has widgets. You dont realize how nice widgets are until you use them. It allows you to access information right on your screens instead of going into an app. You can see multiple programs giving you information etc, and tell them when to update (how frequently). iPhone OS so far... doesn't do this. You have to open an app to see information instead of having it right there in front of you. I personally like android far better as an OS, but the iPhone apps just seem more polished to me. Android apps need to be a bit cleaner.

Flash has run incredibly well for me. The phone ships with flash 4, but a port over from the Froyo mod lets you install flash 10 (so dont go by the EVO flash reviews - they are running v.4). It runs very well after it buffers for a little with video, and pages load just a tad slower. Overall, I am in love with having flash on my phone, but wouldnt be a deal breaker. With Froyo 2.2, it will only get better because of the JIT compiler. Yes... you can watch spankwire without going into mobile mode... lol.

One thing I do miss from my iPhone is the push notifications for the instant message apps. This is the real advantage to push over background apps. If I could add one thing to android, this would be it. Sadly, I probably wouldnt ever see it if I stay with android.

Build quality - man.. its really hard to knock apple for this. They do make one hell of a product and would be hard to touch in this aspect. That new phone with the antenas around the edges was pretty smart. Hopefully people dont develop hand cancer from this :p. EVO is very well built and feels very solid. No complaints here... I was shocked how nice such a large phone fit in my hand.

Plan wise Sprint dominates. For me especially because I get a 15% discount from Sprint... This might weigh into my final decision of which phone to go with. Basically 79.99 for unlimited mobile calling, data, and text.

I love the EVO 4G but Apple really put out a nice phone here. And that being said, Ill probably be in line on the 24th to check it out. The screen looks like something worth checking out for sure, as well as some of the new features.

But just to dispel a rumor about Sprint - their coverage has been great for me.. and I mean GREAT. I encourage anyone to try their 30 day free trial period and test it for yourself. Listening to people on here knock Sprint kept me from trying it for a long time. So... do yourselves a favor and try the EVO 4G for 30 days while you wait for the iPhone to come out.. .You really have nothing to lose!

You are an idiot. How does Steve Jobs taste?
Your mom tastes good.
Over 46 million people can get 4G right now with another 80 million being covered by the end of the year. Few markets my a**

Who cares about a higher res display on a screen 8 inches smaller? Thats like buying a 19 inch 1080 HDTV

Android updates are slow? LMAO!! Android has had 5 major updates in the same time iPhone has had 2

Please get a clue.
- It's not 4g, its WiMax. 34 markets by the year's end is a tiny fraction.
- Apparently, everyone who's picked up the iPhone 4 cares about the screen.
- Yes, Android updates are slow and inconsistent. They take hours/days/months to install/release, and they don't support all platforms at once.

How many android users out there ACTUALLY have the latest android version? Let me guess, still waiting for the update from their carrier?

It is funny watching android fans bashing the new iPhone screen, when just a few months ago they were pumping their fists about how the nexus one kicksass because its screen is better than that of the iPhone.
Thank you.
I'm not going to get involved in your domestic issues about mobile phone networks - totally irrelevant for those of us who don't live in the US.
However, you have seriously missed the point about the resolution/pixel density of the iPhone 4. The higher pixel density is a major selling point.
and, thank you

I'm going to keep it simple...my 4yo and 7yo love playing with the apps on my iphone (and so do I), so will pre-order mine in a couple of weeks. :D

IMO, both phones and carriers obviously have their +'s and -'s, as discussed above and in multiple other forums/websites. It essentially boils down to personal preference...at least in my case. And, I prefer the iphone.

So you're trying to force your 'review' down everyone's throat?

Nope. I am just saying, at least go try the phone for yourself. Letting reviews you read online make up your mind is just stupid no matter what the product is.

So you let reviews from other people dictate your life and make your decisions? Thats pretty sad.

Yes, actually, yes I do. I will let schleps like you buy every gadget out there and save me the headache. And Not to mention save me from swallowing the bitter pill of disappointment; and the even sadder need to force myself to find things I like about my purchase just so i can sleep at night.

LALALALALA NO NO NO NO!!!!!!1111

SPRINT SUX DUDE! LOLz AT&T Edge > Sprint.

I have never tried Android, but LOL IT'S NOT APPLE. GTFO Apple > god. I don't even NEED TO TRY ANDROID!

Sadly for you, the opinions of others do matter.

You probably voted for Palin.

1. False adervitisement of ClearWire's WiMax as, "4G," and only available in a few markets anyway -Still better than 3G...
2. Made of plastic -As are most phones. This is a fact not a con or anything
3. No IPS or retina display -So? iPhone 4 doesn't have a 4.3" display. Who cares if the EVO doesn't have pixels you apparently can't even see. Seems like a waste to me.
4. Not the thinnest phone -Still pretty thin.
5. Doesn't have a screen with as high of a resolution -Didn't we already cover this?
6. No gyroscope -Yes... Because all my time with the 3G really had me dying for a Gyroscope, or even a compass... Who cares? The reason the iPhone 4 is the first phone with a gyroscope is because it's not that big a deal. I don't even have a single app that I need a compass in even.
7. No precision machined stainless steel So what? Who's to say that's better?
8. No software comparable to iTunes to manage the phone DoubleTwist will sync your music. -Many people prefer Drag and Drop anyway for their devices
9. Android updates are slow, and Flash works so poorly that it shouldn't even been touted as a worth while feature. The videos I've seen of flash look good enough. Also, better than the iPhone anyway. I suppose you get a kick out of that blue cube? As for updates... Really? HTC Hero came out on Sprint in October with Android 1.5, then 7 months later the 2.1 update came out. How long have I been on 3.x waiting for 4.x? 1 year. Before that from 2.x to 3.x? 1 year. I'd say it's way faster than Apple's release cycle. I don't think it's valid to complain that Android phones wait longer from when you see the new version to when it's usable if it's STILL FASTER than Apple's release cycle.
I'm sorry, but you're silly for using a bunch of subjective views to argue against me.

1. Better than 3G, sure, but is it legitimate 4G? No.
2. Last time I checked, most plastics weren't as durable or considered as premium as machined stainless steel. So, yes, it is a con.
3. Dont be a sore loser with your weak subjective rebuttal.... "Well I cant tell so who cares."
4. Pretty thin? Ok, but still not the thinnest
5. No, we didn't already cover the fact that iPhone 4 has an IPS screen.
6. I, and others, don't care if you personally don't see any use with it and if you don't have any apps that utilize it, because regardless of your usage, this feature will add even more precise motion sensing. The compass added orientation to the map, and that was a big plus. This will fine tune things even more.
7. Who's to say that precisely machinced metal is better than injection molded plastic? Oh brother....
8. That's nice, drag and drop all you want.... you still don't have a native desktop app to manage your device.

Nope. I am just saying, at least go try the phone for yourself. Letting reviews you read online make up your mind is just stupid no matter what the product is.

Not if the reviews are coming from reliable/credible sources. You should use a combination of independent research and hands on experience before you make a decision.

So you would go out and make a major purchase based off reviews without ever having touched the product? Thats what this guy was saying. He made up his mind READING reviews. Hasnt even touched an Evo.

BTW, i heard AT&T is bumping 3G to be faster than Sprint 4G by this fall. Anyone else heard this. If true, just another reason I am not jumping on EVO.

I also heard AT&T 3g is right now only marginally slower in most major markets than Sprint's 4G. Anyone have any hard numbers on this tidbit?

Yea, they are going to TRY, good luck with that. Oh, the iPhone 4 will not run on it regardless :)

Even with 25 days of Sprints "no questions asked" remaining I'm still not really inclined to return my evo and order an iPhone 4. I'm an apple fanboy and all but this product launch just didn't do it for me.. especially after having an evo for several days.

Just thinking outloud.. AT&T has basically told on themselves with pulling 6 months worth of folks forward to lock them into another contract with a doubled ETF attached to it. The CDMA iPhone is coming..
