Yea, they are going to TRY, good luck with that. Oh, the iPhone 4 will not run on it regardless :)

And what IF at&t actually tried making their coverage map larger instead of the itty bitty tiny portions of the map faster? that would seem to produce more results from my perspective..

So you would go out and make a major purchase based off reviews without ever having touched the product? Thats what this guy was saying. He made up his mind READING reviews. Hasnt even touched an Evo.

I have been to the Sprint store and have held that massive beast in my hands. It felt huge, felt cheap, looks cheap, and most reviews i have read say it is cheap. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck..... you know.

BTW, I put the beast in my pocket and I had a girl ask me if it was an EVO in my pocket or if i thought she was really that hot. how embarrassing.

I then tried to imagine in my mind where i would shove the evo when I am out on the town. I decided the only place i could keep it on my person was in my man bag, which I would be forced to carry.

I then tried to imagine myself actually using that thing in public as a phone, everyone would think that i was actually trying to hide from the police rather than use my phone. Just way embarrassing.

Did i tell you the thing is huge?

I clearly stated that you should use a combination of hands on experience, and independent research to make a decision. If the reviewer is credible and stating pure facts (facts that either do, or do not, fall in line with whatever it is I'm looking for), then yes, I will make an initial/firm decision based on that objective review, until proven otherwise by either more research or hands on experience... or both.

Even with 25 days of Sprints "no questions asked" remaining I'm still not really inclined to return my evo and order an iPhone 4. I'm an apple fanboy and all but this product launch just didn't do it for me.. especially after having an evo for several days.

Just thinking outloud.. AT&T has basically told on themselves with pulling 6 months worth of folks forward to lock them into another contract with a doubled ETF attached to it. The CDMA iPhone is coming..

I for one will be VERY interested to see how iPhone will do on another carrier. Lets face it, a huge part of its success was AT&T not putting any stiff competition up against it. if iPhone goes to Verizon, it will be competing with the Droid, the Incredible and that new Scorpion thats supposed to be running the 1.5ghz Snapdragon. Good luck iPhone, you will need it.

I agree with everything you're saying.... but did you really find it embarrassing that some girl tried to make a subtle pass at you?!

Apple wins this war by not posting specs. People will go for a higher number, but if there isn't a number on the Apple one, people will try it out for themselves, discover that things are just as good if not better (from their point of view) and buy it based on that. While we're all here wondering what the mhz and ram is, because if everyone purchased on specs alone the iPhone would be dead a long time ago.

Sprint Evo vs iPhone 4 - my quandry

Alright,
So after being a "Day One Adopter" of each of the iPhone iterations, I became a Day One Adopter of the Sprint Evo, which I really like. I do, however, find myself (and knew I would) questioning which is the better device for me now that the iPhone 4 has been announced. I didn't wait before buying the Evo because, frankly, I was curious to try out Sprint's phone and their service, and their 30-day return policy made that possible/easy. So far I've appreciated both!

While my list will probably overlap others' in this thread, I'm pulling this together for my own peace of mind, and hopefully to help get even more perspective from the community.

As far as I'm concerned, here are the pros and cons for each, with HW being hardware and SW being software:

iPhone 4 Pros:
HW: Better Screen Resolution (960x640 vs 800 x 640), albeit at a smaller size
HW: (Possibly) Better Reception, due to build (not talking service here)
HW: (Possible) Better Battery Life
HW: Gyroscope
HW: Smaller (+/-)
HW: Lighter (+/-)
HW: (Possibly) Better Camera(s), albeit at a lower resolution
HW: Dual Speakers (?)
HW: Noise Reduction
SW: iPhone OS Speed
SW: iPhone OS Ease-of-Use
SW: iPhone OS Reliability
SW: AppStore Games/Apps (and I have already spent a ridiculous amount there)
SW: iTunes Ease-of-Use
SW: Faster Native Keyboard (what I mean is, I've found I was slightly faster on the iPhone keyboard than I am on the Evo's, despite the fact that it's larger on the screen)

iPhone Cons:
HW: Monthly Cost is higher
HW: Worse Coverage (FOR ME, where I live, unless the 4's reception improves measurably)
HW: Lower res camera(s), albeit with (possible) improved quality
HW: GPS Quality? (don't know whether this will be the same as iPad, but I hope so. The one in the 3GS sucked and would probably be a dealbreaker for me if it's the same here.)
SW: Mediocre Notification System (IMO)
SW: Unknown if jailbreak will be possible (needing this less and less with the backgrounding and wallpapering but still like the added flexibility - please don't go there with the whole pirating argument)
SW: Video chat only on Wi-Fi

Sprint Evo Pros:
HW: Monthly Plan Cost (yeah, I know it's not really hardware)
HW: Larger Screen Size
HW: User Replaceable Battery
HW: 4G (which I could care less about - I don't think it's on the roadmap for HW: HDMI Out (which I like having but may never really use)
HW: Kickstand (I'll admit it, I love this!)
HW: Volume is great
San Diego at this point)
SW: Better Notifications
SW: Android OS Openness
SW: Free Turn-by-Turn GPS
SW: Unlimited Data
SW: Less Expensive Tethering
SW: Video Chat over 3G
SW: Drag-and-Dropping of Files
SW: Greater Flexibility

Sprint Evo Cons:
HW: Touch-Sensitive Buttons (I find myself hitting these way too often)
HW: Ease of powering on - Only able to turn on via top Power button
HW: Weaker Battery (though I'm not, at this point, finding it much worse than my 3GS, YMMV)
SW: A bit slower on 2.1 (may change with 2.2)
SW: Smaller, more expensive app store (for some of my purchases, anyway)
SW: Less polished software

So there you have it. Not even sure what I'm looking for here for you guys - maybe I'm just exorcising demons in my decision-making process. All in all, there's a lot of things weighing on the side of the iPhone 4 and it should be an easier decision than it is. If the iPhone were on Sprint or T-Mobile, I'm not sure whether that would make things easier or harder. I do, however, hate AT&T's rates, I'm not wild about their service. An iPhone for Verizon would have been a non-starter too, despite having arguably the best service, simply because of their cost. I guess I've still got another couple of weeks to decide. I was really hoping, though, that today's announcement would make the decision easier and it really hasn't.

Now had they put out a model with a 4.3" screen, THAT would have made things easy, even considering AT&T's cost and mediocre service in my area...

Anyone else have additional input?

Awww, look at the little baby iPhone. Its so tiny and cute!

Yeah. Let me know when you find that inexpensive 32G microSD card!

Yes, actually, yes I do. I will let schleps like you buy every gadget out there and save me the headache. And Not to mention save me from swallowing the bitter pill of disappointment; and the even sadder need to force myself to find things I like about my purchase just so i can sleep at night.

I agree. Who wouldn't do thorough research on a high-tech item before purchasing?!

We get it, you love the Evo and Sprint....You have been posting/fighting with anybody who doesn't agree with you for days

I think the iPhone 4 hardware upgrade is a significant improvement but for me it's iOS 4 that is a little disappointing....

Folders and sort of Multi Tasking that's it? Really?

I've been playing with the EVO 4 since Friday and have come to like Android a lot. The more I dig in the less I see myself getting the new iPhone.

My iPad gives me access to all iPhone applications and find it unacceptable that Apple would not allow me to tether to the phone.

Might be time to move on after 3 years..... I don't see enough progress in features I care about.

They dont post the specs because its rather embarrassing. Still only 256MB RAM? I had phones 2 years ago that had double that. But I guess when you are running a phone that really doesnt do anything but have little icons that open programs and doesnt really multitask, you cant get away with that. Its also still sporting the SGX535 from the 3Gs while Samsung has come up with way better and more efficient chips.

I can sum it up easier. Look at this link for the new iPhone 4G and tell me there is anything new or "revolutionary" on that list. There have been phones doing all that for years. Apple is no doubt playing catch up to Google. Android phones were doing all this since day 1 and Apple acts like something like multitasking or video calls are groundbreaking. I am almost embarrassed to own an iMac, Macbook and iPad but they are nice.

You also left out a HUGE advantage the Evo has over the iPhone...Google maps with navigation. The way you can talk to the phone and get voice guided turn by turn directions or find anything you want in your area puts iPhones maps to shame.

The issue with specs guys' like you is that you can't really quantify how the experience differs with the iPhone. There were tons of phones that did a lot of things before the iPhone did them, but iPhone did them in a better way (e.g. touchscreen).

HTC made the first touchscreen phone in 2002, 5 years before the iPhone. Apple took existing technology and streamlined it nice though, they deserve credit for that. Specs come into play in real world though too. Example would be my iPad. If I go on a forum with lots of text and graphics and flick scroll on a long page, I get the lovely checkerboard pattern as its underpowered 256MB of RAM tries to keep up. I get no such thing on my Evo with its 512 of RAM.

For all of you thinking the EVO is going to have major battery issues... Look back at the threads from right after the iPhone 3G and 3Gs came out...

Hey since those that wanted EVO's have had to stick through all those comments from fanboys about how anyone who likes the EVO must be a "spec whore" does that hold for anyone who likes the new iPhone screen?

Anyway... iPhone 4 looks awesome. I wish I could have both phones. Instead I'm going to get the EVO and enjoy a cheaper plan and 4G (WiMax and LTE are technically not 4G by the standards, but does it matter? It's faster than 3G.) for another two years. Then I'll see what Apple does and make another decision.

Why? I mean seriously, can anyone tell me something you can do on an iPhone we havent been able to do on Android phones (and usually do it better) for 2 years? I will be waiting :)

Curious about video editing capabilities. I wasn't aware Android had these, but I haven't been keeping up.

What kind of features does Android have that it does better? WiFi hotspot not included, but that's a really neat feature.

Enjoy it? :)

Seriously though, why is it always iPhone >=< Android? Why can't it be personal preference and what not? To each their own.
