Tech specs aside, the iPhone "feels" more solid when it comes to the software. The area I dislike the Evo the most is with the UI. The HTC Sense UI is slow and feels like a rush job.

My buddy picked one up this past weekend, and while I like the size of the screen and a lot of things about Android; the UI HTC put on it just ruins the experience.

Cons:
9. browser always defaults to mobile sites... gets annoying
10. a little too big
11. itunes sync (you can only drag and drop files)

#9 - That's the case with safari as well, in fact all mobile browser have this one issue. I'd not flag android with this.

#10 - subjective, but yeah I can see how a 4.3" screen could be a bit too big for some. I've not tried it myself so I can't make any sort of judgement

#11 - there's a bunch of apps available to avoid drag and drop. The most popular is doubletwist which syncs your iTunes library to android, playlists and all :) No more dragging/dropping

TechCrunch Review (well, one of them, that confirms the others. Bottom line... Meh.)

So you cherry pick the ONE bad review, from someone who has openly admited that he is a apple iphone fanatic since day one??

Anyway, I would take the EVO over the iphone anyway... Iphone 4 lacks far more than the EVO, but if you like the "polish" of a OS better than the "function" then by all means go with the iphone 4... its a good phone.

Yes, I would like to take the "polish" of iOS over android, because its "function" is better also.

How is it better, no general statements...

What functions does it have over EVO/Android...

It looks pretty and is still a good phone/os, but fanboy comments wont get you far without the points to back them up.;)

Apple's implementation of cut/paste, the consistent UI through out the apps, swipe to delete, pinch and zoom is generally available, etc. Apple's attention to the smallest details pays off.

I'm android fan, but there's no arguing that iOS is a highly polished well written OS

See I can respect that, I just hate these general, blanket statements without any regards to what it is that they are talking about.

I agree cut and paste on iOS is great... the look of the OS is nice. I dont care much for swipe to delete... seems like a unnecessary feature when there is so much more that needs to be done.

Also iOS has a little better implementation of Exchange vs 2.1... but 2.2 seems to have resolved that.

2.2 is an improvement, but I think apple still leads in embracing exchange support. I'm using touchdown to access my work's email. I recently tried 2.2 on my Nexus one and found the support a bit lacking still. Heck for some reason the android email app (non-gmail) fails to forward html emails as html - a pet peave of mine. The gmail app does, but not the email - why not

Touchdown gives me all that I need for accessing my work email, albeit for an expensive price tag (30 bucks) but its worth it.

Hey. No disrespect, but where in the article does it say he "is an apple iphone fanatic" at all or even anything like that? He said he switched from the iPhone because he like Androids better and that he is, for all intents and purposes, an Android Fanboy.

I liked the article. An Android Fanboy criticizing an Android. Seems very fair.

3. apps have access to all kinds of personal info and google relies on users to flag malicious apps... no real policing of bad malicious apps.

I don't see that as a problem.

  • Being able to access info outside of a sandbox is why apps can be better integrated.
  • When you install an app, it tells what info it wants access to.
  • People have relied on this model for decades on other phones, laptops and desktops without too much problem.
9. browser always defaults to mobile sites... gets annoying

If the EVO is like the Incredible, open the browser's menu, More .. Settings... turn off Mobile View.

Not sure what it does... I suspect it changes the User Agent so websites don't know it's Android.

Could have been an honest mistake seeing as how x3 was involved twice (three days, three times). Not sure why you would knowingly make a false statement only to have to retract it later. Still, there's nothing to be ashamed about. The Evo is selling very well.

.

I was going to agree with u until you got to this point. Laptops and desktops have had many problems because of this. Viruses, slow computers, bad communication, incompatible software/hardware.

just a few things.

Other than that, i agree mostly.

i have been using the evo since the release day... its been interesting.

Cons:
1. keyboard is a major issue... not as good or smooth as iphone

I think this is a personal preference, because I think the Evo keyboard is much nicer than the iPhone's, both in appearance and use.

4. facbook app is awful (im big on facebook)

It doesn't come with the latest one on it. Make sure you update to the latest version through the Market. It is now up to par with the iPhone app.

7. battery life is lacking

Yes, this is very disappointing. I've followed every guide I can find and turned off auto syncing, removed widgets, and turned off all of the smartphone features like 4G, wifi, bluetooth, and gps, and it still drains faster than I'd like. My Evo has been unplugged for just a few hours today, and I've only used it to browse the web during lunch, and it is at 55% now. I haven't made any calls.

9. browser always defaults to mobile sites... gets annoying

There is a setting that you can change so that it never uses mobile sites.

10. a little too big

I also feel like it is too big. I never notice my iPhone in my pocket, but the Evo pushes into my leg.

11. itunes sync (you can only drag and drop files)

There are several apps that will sync your iTunes playlists, as well as iPhoto albums, to the Evo, without having to drag and drop anything. (I do think it is nice, though, that you have the option to manually move files to the Evo, unlike the iPhone.)

Im still on the fence... evo or iphone4.... I like the evo and android is a nice change from iphones boring iOS but iOS just seems to do things so smoothly!

I'm on the fence too, but not necessarily for the iPhone 4. I'm thinking about taking the Evo back and sticking with my iPhone 3G, and waiting to see what new Android phones come out later this year. I was really hoping that after all of this time Apple would introduce some features to bring the iPhone up to par with Android. I was very disappointed they didn't at least add a notification light to the new iPhone, and it is pitiful to not have a notification system without jailbreaking. Also, I really don't think I want to invest another two years into AT&T.

5. kickstand

This thing just seems like it's a few months away from being an annoying piece of dangling metal once the spring wears out. The one I saw at Best Buy had only been out for a few days and was already loose from people tweaking it.

I have a feeling the people playing with the kickstand at best buy are putting much more strain on it than an average user...

I'm sure we'll see kickstand-less battery covers too.

Anyone still getting the EVO?

Was just wondering if anyone will still be getting the EVO or an alternate smartphone to the iPhone 4, if so, why?

I was very impressed with the new features and will eagerly await the release of the new iPhone, can't wait!

I'll be getting the new iPhone 4, but I want to test drive the EVO and return it in 30 days just to try it out. Probably won't though.

No it isn't. I have it on my N1 and it's awful.

The drag and drop is nice (although I've never used it), but most of those automated programs are not nearly as well integrated into the phone as it is on iPhone, especially if you have iTunes. I like everything to just work when I plug it in, and for a lot of us who use macs, the iPhone has a decided advantage in this respect.

When is the last time you updated it? I just updated mine yesterday, and its the exact same app that I have on the iPhone.

I agree, as a Mac owner, the integration with the iPhone is very nice.
