"Although remember that the only apps that support background usage at this time are the default applications built into iOS 4.0. (For example iPod, Mail, etc.)"

That is not true multitasking if only a few apps can run in the background. Sounds like no 3rd party apps will be allowed to.

Yeah, like Pandora, GPS, Skype, etc...

Or are you seriously saying it's not true multitasking because 3rd party apps that leverage multitasking aren't out yet?

And let's be clear here, it's not as if Android's implementation is all that great. I have a Nexus One and I tried to do something today, multitasking wise, that would be simple to do on an iPhone running iOS 4.0, that my N1 wouldn't do. I was in an app that I hadn't opened recently, held 'home' and went to another app. When I finished what I needed to do I held 'home' again and the app I had just switched from wasn't there. Apparently I hadn't opened or used it enough times for the damn thing to show up in the pop-up app switcher. Having most recent apps show up makes sense, and I'm going to love the built in music controls for both the iPod and third party apps like Pandora that are available wherever you are in the OS. You have to understand, a way to switch between recent apps that are able to save their state without going to the home page first will meet 98% of people's needs and what they want as a multitasking solution. I'm tech savvy, and it's going to work for me just fine.

Well, for starters, I can multitask ANY program or app I wish, not just the ones Steve Jobs tells me I can :) Huge difference right there alone. Apple will designate the programs that will be allowed to multitask and only those programs. On my Evo, I can be streaming live radio like Pandora while having all my IMs running as well as surfing the net and downloading apps from the market and even have Google navigation running and giving me voice guided directions while driving. Thats multitasking :)

Well kinda. Every app holds it's state. But like youtube HD, if you jump out of by accidently pressing one of those STUPID Capacitance buttons (god!!! give me real ones so I don't keep pressing them by my skin). you lose the video. It happen to me 3 times. but alot of the messaging background data apps work in the background.

That's a gift and a curse.....especially when you are trying to figure out why your battery is draining.

Not only that, but his scenario he spent so much time outlining will easily be easy to accomplish once turn-by-turn GPS apps take advantage of that API.

Well cool, when multitasking finally arrives we shall celebrate! It will have only taken Apple what? 5 years to acomplish what Google has been doing since day 1 with Android. Welcome to the party, better late then never I suppose :)

Well, for the scenario I detailed near the end of the last page, Apple's implementation will actually work better (and more logically) for me. It's far more intuitive and satisfies the multitasking needs of the vast majority of people in a way that conserves battery life and is easy to understand. Your situation (where you brag about doing all this stuff at the same time) is completely possible. Can you think of any situations where the "limited multitasking" of the iPhone is insufficient for your needs as compared to Android?

I will be happy when I can get on my iPad and have my IM clients running, Pandora running, Safari going and I can download or update apps from the app store without having to back out and stop one to do anther.

Definitely, I'm really excited for the update to the iPad, although I don't know if they will change the 'back out to download an app' nonsense. It really frustrates me.

I think both implimentations will work however I don't understand why Apple made it so complicated (for the developer). With the iphone multitasking is up to the developer of the app to implement the calls to make it work. On Android (and other mobile OS's) the OS does the multitasking and the developers don't have to worry about it. So with Android an app will multitask risk out of the box and you don't have to update older apps. With the iphone method each developer is going to have to release another update to handle it.

I just think its an over complicated way of achieving the same result. Apple will tell you its because its lower battery usage but I've seen no hard stats to prove that.

Just my 2 cents.

Why do people say things like this? Yeah, it cost extra money for a 32gb card in an EVO. So what! It cost about the same amount to up the memory in an iPhone from 16gb to 32gb as well. Therefore this issue is in fact, a non-issue.

No ! It doesn't !

iPhone with 16g costs the same as an HTC with a measly 8g .... $199

And to get an iPhone 32g costs $299 ..... It will cost another $200 for a 32g card for your Evo , plus how much more to have a battery that will last as long as the new iPhone ?

Costs ARENT the same , stop kidding yourself

Yup. That's me!

I took it back because of the carrier, not the phone. And as I said before, I still have my Nexus One so the avatar stays. I think Android has a lot of potential but I really need a decent phone on AT&T before I can make that switch.

Hey, what issues did you find with the carrier? I live in Arlington and travel into Springfield and DC often and I know you're near here. Just poor coverage in general? Couldn't you roam on Verizon? I know they have great coverage in DC.

You have to understand the API's are new. Current apps have NOT been updated. All apps will get updated for 4.0 as they did for 3.0. Official submission date is today, June 10th, for apps to get updated to the App Store. Again, ALL apps, including third parties, will be able to use multitask...

Sigh dude...you're really being hard on this to accept...

I'm looking forward to trying out some multitasking on iOS4 when apps are updated to support it.

I think Apple's solution to multitasking is just what the platform needed.

I paid $449 (retail) for my Evo, $49 for an extended battery and $80 for my 16GB card and I dont cry about $10 a month although I dont have 4G yet. I wanted the best phone on the market and I am willing to pay for it. If I wanted to be cheap, I would have a Cricket :)

Actually, you'd still have the 8gb card that came with the EVO so essentially you're getting 40gb for that price along with Television, FM Radio and several good free solutions for navigation. So the money saved in not having to purchase such things or pay an extra monthly fee for such things more then makes up for a $100 additional cost on the memory card. And the battery isn't an issue. A lot of people have gotten a full days use out of it. Like anything, including the iPhone, it depends on how you use it. They sell bigger battery packs for iPhones too.

Add in the unlimited data, 4G, bigger screen and ability to use it as a hotspot and it's just icing on the cake.

I would have kept the 8, not as refined but much more fun to drive and faster.

I disgree. Straight line. 8 wins. but actually, its not that its slower....i'm actually going as fast and having a tendency to speed more. It's because its not as raw. 8 was as raw you can get (States side atleast). 8 you can definitely feel the road. Plus I got a sick deal.

But on the corners, the X grips. I take alot of exotic roads and where I would understeer with the 8. I grip with the X. Handling is by far better.

Plus it looks better, IMO. I'm getting older and I think i want just alittle bit of comfort. I'm not paul walker. But I'll still mod it.

I would take the 9 tho over the X

Battery though? I bet you 90% of the people, if not higher, hardly ever remove their batteries. Funny how you state you'll just buy another battery. Do you carry it with you? lol jk

Sure. It fits quite nicely in my wallet in the compartment behind my driver's license.

Fun to see the same group pounding their chest and yelling how great Evo is....

Woohoo! You know you love it! So does everyone else, look at how many posts and views this thread has :)

At least we answer questions for those who have them though and arguing pros and cons compared to the iPhone is interesting. I am not expecting to change anyones mind and dont really care too. My phone works great for ME, thats really all that matters.
