ok guys, i'm actually using the incredible right now. it is nowhere near as polished as the iphone. frankly, android still feels like beta software, and i can't believe google is actually putting out this crap considering there resources. Even the maps and youtube apps (both google apps) are less polished than the iphone versions. The touch sensitive buttons are a pain in the ass, i don't understand why these companies just don't stick with tactile buttons. The screen is way too narrow and typing in portrait is very frustrating. The screen also has a red bias. I figure i have 30 days to return it and will probably end up dumping it and jumping for the 4G iphone in June unless there's some compelling reason for me to stick with this phone.

I've found that Android mirrors its Linux origin and so do the fans. Linux fans are certainly more accepting of rough interfaces choosing to place more emphasis on "cool" hardware.

Mac users, by and large, are concerned about workflow and aesthetics and less concerned about having the latest brag worthy hardware (though that doesn't mean they want slow)

In the end I think it's the polish that people are willing to pay a premium for. Android has made some nice gains though they have done a fair amount of "whoring" their products via cheap giveaways.

Will a person that buys a $50 phone spend $200 on apps? The odds are against the majority doing so.

Android will eventually overtake Apple's iPhone in numbers but since the money and development is spread over multiple vendors it will not generate the type of money that Apple will enjoy and development will slow down because "design by committee" becomes more difficult and time consuming as the number of phones grow.

Sorry to disappoint, ..... Oh well, root appeals to me for that reason.

Are you sure this offer carries over to the incredible? I have seen no proof of that.

Not sure of anything, but something has to give on tethering. Won't make a decision until after the IPhone HD is out. Might even think about jail breaking my IPhone 3G until a possible CDMA IPhone.

Always been paranoid with jail breaking in terms of getting updates, but sounds like my 3G IPhone won't support 4.0 anyways so who cares anymore. I installed the profile to tether my IPhone (e.g. without jail breaking), it was great, but at some point, some update disabled that capability.

Do a-lot of camper camping and it sure is nice surfing the web, tethered to the IPhone in the middle of nowhere (e.g. sort of, have to be in 3G range). Of course, the update killed that enjoyment!!!

Just hoping with the Android introduction, it is time to get a-bit more competitive in the services area.

I got mine today via the FedEx fairies. I've used it for the afternoon and night and I have to say it's an amazing piece of technology. Aside from iTunes syncing, I don't miss the iPhone at all.

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone was revolutionary, but I'm not going to blindly dis everything else that advances the field. I just hope Apple fires back with something equally terrific...and I REALLY hope it isn't held back by an AT&T.

Well I went and looked at the Incred this evening. Not a bad phone at all. I didn't like how light it was. Seemed too cheap. I heard that in reviews as well. However with that said, it was smooth as could be. I was able to do anything I want in the OS. It actually has so many options it's hard to figure out if I like it. I am the type of person that I have to check out everything to make a decision. There is so much on Android that I would need a solid week with the phone to decide if I like it.

The funny thing, I was remarking about how smooth it was to my wife. I checked out the kill task function and found out there were like 20+ apps running mulitask. I had a wtf moment as I killed them all with one button. If I try and run 3 apps at once with my 3GS it slows down....20+apps?!?! Holy cow! How the hell was it able to run all of those apps and not become a pos?

I'm a switcher. Picked up my Incredible yesterday with plans to try it for 14 days before deciding whether to early terminate the plan on my iPhone 3GS. I'm less than 24h in, and I already know the 3GS is a goner (keeping as a backup game machine for the kids).

I'm keeping a running list of reasons I love my Incredible here.

I ordered one too yesterday. Amazons $99 deal was too sweet for me. I still will keep the iphone and use it as a touch.

I'm waiting for froyo. If flash works as well as Adobe says we should expect, then im jumping ship. Plus, judging by the last few iPhone upgrades, there shouldn't be much to write home about. Then again I am a masochist, I patiently waited 8 years for the 15" powerbooks to get high-res displays.

HTC Incredible Impressions - iPhone 3GS User

I know there are hardcore haters and lovers in both groups. I am neither. I love my iPhone but it does have it's setbacks.

After trying out my brothers new HTC Incredible, I must say I do like some aspects of the OS. What I really like is the home screen. Front and center is all the info or your day to day use items. Weather, clock and whatever icons you want. Along with the access of the phone. Another item I like is the pull down notification area. I thought that was really cool. I also enjoy the "themes" that the OS has. Work, play, HTC, custom - etc. The widgets are nice too. I thought they were just "showy" and not much function but they are really functional. The BIG difference besides the OS, was the screen. If Apple does not get a higher resolution in the 4G, it's going to be bad. I know I won't be getting it. The screen was really nice. Crisp, vibrant and clean. A far cry from the crappy screen of the iPhone. Of course the Incredible has flash for the camera and all that. That really doesn't concern me much. I know this is stupid, but I do like the wallpaper/weather animations :)

The main thing I do not like about Android and that I don't think I will get over anytime soon if ever, is it feels "messy". You like things were just thrown in. You have this really nice "bubbly" interface and then you have menus that are like labyrinths trying to find things. Just doesn't feel right.

On the iPhone, things feel "cleaner" and smoother. The "experience" is nicer. I also can sync right up with iTunes. All my digital movies, music, ringtones and everything else. Simple. I also get my updates for my apps all in one location.

Like I said, I don't like or hate any one over another. Android has it's pros and cons and does the iPhone. There are some things on Android that I wish were on the iPhone and vice versa.

I still feel the iPhone has the best experience to date. I am going to wait it out and see what the iPhone 4G has in store. Apple really needs to fix some things and change the experience. We shall see. If they don't deliver, I will probably check out Android as a replacement.

Don't get an Android device, you will be running back to the iPhone because of how many features you'll miss. Its a lot more userfriendly that an Android device. And also Android devices don't have a smooth scrolling unlike the iPhone. And the Motorola Droid reacts to any surface, which I'm assuming the Incredible does too, and the iPhone only reacts to skin-like materials. And if you want these notifications on your homescreen, live analog clocks, live weather apps and what not, just Jailbreak. Simple. And free.

Yeah. I noticed the scrolling horizontal and vertical was not as smooth as it is on the iPhone. The touch was nearly the same though. Did not see any lag or the like on that. It picked up whatever I hit on the keyboard.

Can you watch hulu videos and the real youtube.com with the Incredible?

Hmm, good question, also if it can, then I should ask does Flash make your phone slow? Does Flash drain your battery by extreme amounts? Does Flash make your browser crash? Does Flash lag? Does Flash play at times when you don't want it? Say you're in a restaurant and you're browsing the internet, an automatic playing Flash video comes on of porn, and what happens when people look over at you? "If you want porn, buy an Android phone!" - Steve Jobs

Also, does Flash make your phone crash and reboot?

Thats right, thats why we want Flash on the iPhone...

Wait, what? What are you talking about? I just rubbed my Droid with a cough drop, a ketchup packet, and a plush penguin toy, and got no response. Where did you get this idea?

I will ask him.

I will say that we loaded CNN and BestBuy as test sites on both phones. His phone showed both sites in all their glory - flash included. You could see the flash stories/banners scrolling/moving along. It also loaded quick too. I noticed no slow downs or anything.

He did try to launch some CNN flash videos but they would not load. He said it's using flash lite and the full flash would be out soon.

It reacted to my shirt, by any surface I meant that it will go off in your pocket, unlike the iPhone.

Untrue. I have put the iPhone in my shirt pocket and it has reacted. The screen was changed or an app started. Not often but it does happen.

Ok, my brother got back to me..

Hulu - glitchy.

YouTube - Opens in a flash player but does play it as flash.

I got an incredible. I was sick of not having 3G at home and I'm tired of waiting for a Verizon iPhone. Hopefully in two years it'll be here. Till then the incredible will hold me over.

The OP's thoughts IMO are spot on. I find that Android is not as user friendly, and a niche OS whereas iPhone OS is for the masses. I believe it will stay this way. The Android ecosystem will continue to grow and improve just as iPhone's will. There is room for both. All my buddies who are iPhone users still were confused on how to navigate through my phone. Not as intuitive or polished. Much more customizable and open. That's my review of the phone's software.

Notice how I said the Motorola Droid. And some apps it reacts to your shirt? The iPhone reacts to your shirt in no apps.

You're not making any sense. Lol.

It doesn't matter really. Thread isn't about the screen reacting to this or that. It's a touch screen, some reaction to other material is acceptable.

A) I have a Motorola Droid and until recently had an iPod Touch. You can interact with the screen through cloth on either device if the screen is unlocked. It has nothing to do with what app you're running, but there does have to be skin on the other side of the cloth. If you hold the phone upside down and rub it on a shirt that's laying on a table, it won't react. It's still your skin that's interacting with the screen.

B) "Your shirt" is a bit different from "any surface" (your original assertion). It's not like the Droid (or the iPhone) goes crazy every time a strong breeze blows over it.

Easy solution to this "problem" (that affects both devices): lock the screen before putting the device in your pocket.
