I would upgrade no matter what due to the resale value (gets lower over time), but this is what I want. RFID, higher res front camera with Facetime conference ability, better voice control, and various colors.

New notification system would be nice.
But in terms of hardware, what should be added to iPhone 5 to top the the iPhone 4?

I don't think we'll see 4g (AT&T won't have there's until late next year/early2012 and a verizon version would still need a CDMA legacy support). I see next years being what the 3GS was to the 3G, we'll see a speed boost, better camera, better front facing camera, better battery, better reception, more storage, Maybe a slightly bigger screen (3.6"-3.7"), and possibly a redesigned back plate not made glass (though I really like the feel and look of the glass back). As far as ios5, better notifications, possibly widgets, and maybe customizable sounds for e-mails and text messages.

Given the issues with iPhone 4, will iPhone 5 next year be a major design change?

Traditionally, next year's iPhone update should be mostly cosmetic. Maybe more memory. Maybe a better camera. But same design.

Given the problems with iPhone 4, is next year destined to see a complete refresh of iPhone?

Not likely, apple doesn't change the design of any of its products too often.

I think it will be but not because of the antenna issue. If you look at the history of the iPhone when the 1st generation iphone launched and then the 2nd gen iphone launched they were diffrent as far as the materials used on the back of it.

Since SJ is pretty much billing this as a "Reset" on the iPhone then most likely the next one will be a moderate refresh with a different design.

I think apple will need to offer up an iPhone with atleast 4 inch screen (with the same resolution as the iPhone 4) by next year at the very least.

Power users want an iPhone with a bigger screen like the Andriod phones all offer.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

They stuck with the same design as 3G for 3GS even though they were cracking up a storm and I predict the same thing with iPhone 5.

Even if there is no antenna issue, for PR purposes, isn't it in Apple's interest to make the new iPhone with a different antenna location?

No offense, but EVERYONE that sees me with the iPhone 4 (whether tech geek or grandmother) asks me the same thing... "Are you having those antenna problems?"

I think Apple refreshes next year with a more than minor design change, which happens to have a new antenna location- just simply to stop the negative news about the antenna.

Erm...newsflash, Apple doesn't cater to the 'power user'/geeks but rather the general consumer and the general consumer is happy with 3.5/3.7"

As for the OP i don't see them doing a redesign but rather a tweak, i'm guessing they'll move the antenna strip to an upper region of the phone, coat the strip or find a way to put it back inside the phone, clock the CPU higher and iOS5.

An iPhone with a giant screen might cater to the fanny-pack / man-purse crowd, but it would certainly alienate the designer jeans crowd.

There is nothing cool about needing a purse or custom cargo pants to carry your phone.

I'd rather have this in iPod Touch.

If Apple hype is to be believed, its much more difficult to make screens larger, while keeping durability. Since the iPod Touch has a smaller battery and less internal parts than an iPhone, it has more space to add structural components to give it a 4 inch screen.

Lots of people want a smart phone with a screen big enough that they can watch videos, read books and browse the web on it comfortably.

Maybe if you stop wearing jeans that are so incredibly tight, you wouldn't need a purse and would have no problem putting a phone with a bigger screen like the Evo 4G, Driod X or Driod Incredible in your pocket. :p

If only the iPad had a speaker/microphone, you could just use that as a humongous iPhone...

They were forced to do it after the first iPhone and its all aluminum back which, while it looked very apple-ish, created some reception issues, hence the plastic back of the 3g and 3gs.

So I think they will once again be forced to fix another bad design.

An upgrade would be to just fix the problems on the iP4. Or, if the new design is the reason for many overheating for no reason, then perhaps they will redesign it. Maybe lose the glass on the backside so it can breath easier?

huh? 3 completely different iPhone designs in 4 years seems pretty often to me.

I predict a more 3GS style phone, including reversion back to an internal antenna for iP5. Apple is clearly inexperienced at the phone design thing and trying everything they can think of, 1 year at a time.

iPhone 1...aluminum back...reception killer, dent monster. iPhone 3G/S...scratch-prone cracked housings become a repair/refurb nightmare for them. iPhone 4..."Oops, we probably should have kept the antenna inside." iPhone 5..."Ahh now we're starting to get this."

I would never want a four inch screen in my pocket. That is why I have an iPad, for 'power' computing...

What can you do on a four inch screen that you can't do on the iPhone screen? Pretty sure the iPhone screen is better than any four inch screen on the market.

I do absolutely EVERYTHING on my phone and i would never want a larger screen. Phones with larger screens just seem big and bulky and they would not be nearly as nice to carry around, especially in your pocket. And especially with the new display theres no reason for a larger screen.

First three phones look pretty much the same and the iPhone 2G was the best built phone of the 3 by far.....wait, of the 4 by far. Get a case and it dont dent. Mine didnt.
