I doubt next years iteration will be called the "iPhone 5". Something along the lines of how the 3G went to the 3GS. It'll be a minor tech bump and something will be done about the antenna to shut people up but nothing too drastic. My 2 cents -- which are worthless -- thanks for reading.

I can't really see them naming it the iPhone 4S or 4.5. With the release of the iPhone 4 they have put a definite numeric stamp on the phone itself. It seems to me like they will have to continue using the numeric stamp from now on, or at least if they want to be consistent.

I know it's way too early, but I do have some thoughts... the biggest changes should be software related...

Software:
  • Redesigned UI (hierarchical system) for quicker navigation, organization. Possibly list based instead of grid based.
  • Much improved notification system, including accessible notifications from lock screen (show how many unread emails, etc)
  • Allows rotation in any direction like the iPad.
  • Voice accesible menus and speech-to-text throughout the OS
  • Wireless iTunes syncing, cloud based

Hardware:
  • Mostly the same look as the iPhone 4
  • Physical orientation lock switch
  • 32GB and 62GB models
  • Faster processor
  • Compatible with LTE 4G, CDMA, and GSM
  • (less likely) Touch sensitive back to allow for gesture based navigation

Alright. I'll have a go. Here's my (very) short list of requested features:
- when installing updates/ new applications, the process should happen in the background so that it doesn't "rip" you out of the App Store app (a message could notify you that the process is taking place/ has finished) -> know what I mean?

Oh, good point. I hate how it does that now.

After iPhone 4, I think it'll be iPhone 4G, iPhone 4GS, iPhone 5 and then I have no idea after that.

5 maybe 6-

The LED light will double as a projector.

Windows in Safari will be re-sizable and allowing multiple pages, just like on a desktop.

Expose will work, just like on a desktop to make switching apps and windows quicker.

Touch sensitive on the back and sides and to the left and right of the screen, which can be set to perform different functions pending on the app your in.

Eye and face recognition, so that you can access your phone when it is locked and have your saved settings used etc.

A new store where Apple takes a cut off all transactions where you buy and sell stuff, like e-bay. I guess they'll call it iBay, it might even be completely free, just iAd's driven.

Quieter vibrator. My phone is on silent for a reason.

Are you kidding? The vibrate on the iPhone has always been so weak for me! When I am walking, more than half the time I don't even notice it vibrating unless it's a phone call!

colors is not a good idea, makes it too childish. ipod is a different device so no problem with that. phones are not toys

I have no opinion on hardware improvements for the next phone, but as for the next OS, it would be nice to finally see:

  • A LockInfo-type screen with info on missed calls, voicemails, texts, calendar events, weather, etc.
  • The ability to save email attachments ala Attachment Saver
  • Live icons for weather and clock. Make it an option so that people who don't want their battery draining can turn this off.
  • Something, anything that's better than the current notification system, which is just awful
  • Custom SMS tones
  • Multiple rich HTML email signatures. "Sent from my iPhone" isn't gonna cut it anymore.

I'd like to see in the next OS:
- A way of organising photos into albums on the phone, like on the iPad. My Camera Roll is getting a bit big and congested now. Would like to just drag pictures into new folders (albums) like you can with apps.
- FM radio - guessing this is software, being as my old Nokia from 5 years ago could do this
- Better notifications
- The ability to delete (or at least uncheck in iTunes) the Apple apps, like Stocks, which I never use

Hardware wise, I'd like glass that acts as advertised, and doesn't scratch when carried around in an empty pocket. But more realistically, I think we'll get an Intel six-core processor, overclocked to 5Ghz, 32Gb RAM, 1Tb storage, ultra-retina 1440dpi 3D display, nvidia Quadro iFX SLI graphics, 21 megapixel 4K video camera, 9.1 DTS surround sound, and an anti-matter fusion-core battery for infinite charge.

But seriously, I think the hardware is pretty damn good as it is. Next gen will no doubt include some performance increases, and more megapixels on the camera (something I could live without as the current camera is sweet enough).

Haha yes, I was kidding. It is very weak, but still loud.

Do you think they'll be able to get the water cooling running on normal tap water? It's going to be a pain if I have to find somewhere to buy distilled water every time I need to refill the cooling reservoir?

tears off new pieces of toilet paper for me in the bathroom so I don't have to.

Umm 1 gig ram faster CPU 8 megapixel camera 2 megapixel. Front camera. Better antenna. Better battery life. I think the design i's going to stay the same. Other than that I don't know what else they can improve maybe a graphic chip for games? Idk

An app that allows you to store files from your computer (mentioned in another thread). Colors would be nice. S4 processor <waits for an Audi owner/enthusiast to say "I see what you did thar!!">.

lol

I see what you did there!! lol

perhaps even and RS4 chip :p

Widgets on the lock screen

If they will ever do widgets, i think it will only be on the lock screen. My guess is they would make the time smaller and allow for one live widget on each side. You would be able to choose from weather, mail, notes, stocks, and calendar. Then perhaps maybe tapping them on the lock screen would open them for even more details.

That would be a great os 5 feature that would still be simple and iPhone like.

EDIT: and allowing custom folders in the photo app! It's ridiculous that I can't choose between downloaded pictures, camera photos, and videos.
